Sophie Madeleine Du Pont was the youngest daughter of Eleuthère Irénée and Sophie Dalmas du Pont. E. I. du Pont was the founder of the black powder manufacturing company, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. Margaretta Elizabeth Lammot was a daughter of Daniel Lammot (1782-1877) and Susan Parham Beck Lammot (1786-1817) of Philadelphia. In 1824, she married Alfred Victor du Pont, a son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont. Alfred V. du Pont joined the family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1818 and eventually became senior partner. He resigned from the firm in 1850.
