Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

Random House Records, 1925-1999.
The collection consists of the editorial and production archives of Random House, Inc. from its founding in 1925 to the present time. The most important book published by Random House was James Joyce's ULYSSES. Because of its alleged obscenity, it was only legally admitted into the United States after a long battle by Random House in the courts ending in 1934. The Random House Archives contain letters and documents relating to this famous case.

Letters and poem, 1922 January 19, 1925 October 4, 1949 December 16.
1922 letter to Mrs. Harzof is about [T]he "Centaur", [a book which Rogers designed and printed at the Montague Press] "several years ago." "I printed about 130 copies and gave away half of them - Sold most of the rest at $5, and the last few ones at $10. ⁵I have still two left but don't care to sell either of them." Postscript asks "If you are issuing catalogues, won't you put me on your list?" Included is a typescript transcript of the letter. Rogers thanks his friend Frederick Warde who wrote an article about him published in the Fleuron. He gives his opinion on various type faces and speaks of a work in progress "a pamphlet on Franklin's Passports." Personal references include Carl Purington Rollins, Hanna Kiel, Bernard Newdigate, and Sturge Moore. Also included is a graceful punning poem to his weekend hosts, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Harden, referring ruefully to Prohibition. Included are typescript transcripts of the letter and poem. 1949 letter answers Donald Jackson's queries about The Freeman's Oath. Rogers says it was printed for Fred Melcher, the Publisher's Weekly, and gives an outline of the history of the oath. He adds that the only type-face he is working on is a version of Centaur for a typewriter.
