World Publishing Company.
Variant namesIn 1905, Alfred H. Cahen opened the Commercial Bookbinding Company in Cleveland and acquired the World Syndicate Publishing Company in 1928. His company then began publishing Bibles, dictionaries, and children's books and went public with a stock issue in 1929. By 1940, when the name was changed to The World Publishing Company, it had become the largest publisher of Bibles and dictionaries in the United States. Two reprint lines, Tower Books (sold at $.49) and Forum Books (sold at $1.00) were launched in 1939 and 1942, respectively. Work began on Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language in 1941. Ben D. Zevin, who had joined the company in 1935, became president in 1945. The College Edition of the New World Dictionary was published in 1953 and quickly became the leading college dictionary in the country. The company was sold to Times Mirror in 1963, who eventually sold it to William Collins Sons, Ltd. When that company disbanded in 1980, the dictionary division was sold to Simon & Schuster who still publish Webster's New World Dictionary. The Bibles, children's and trade books were sold to various other companies and some of these are still in print.
