Variant namesFrom 1931 to 1947, Ernst F. Detterer served as the second Custodian of the John M. Wing Foundation on the History of Printing.
As Wing Custodian, Detterer, a noted calligrapher, acquired the extensive C.L. Ricketts calligraphy collection (1942), established the Newberry Calligraphy Study Group, and designed the Newberry Library Bindery Typeface.

Since its 1918 donation and endowment by John Mansir Wing, the Wing Foundation on the History of Printing has had four custodians: Pierce Butler, 1920-1931, Ernst F. Detterer, 1931-1947, James M. Wells, 1951-1984, and Paul F. Gehl, 1986-.
The custodians of the Wing Foundation have built a major research collection of some 27,000 volumes and several thousand manuscripts documenting not only the aesthetic of book design, but also lettering and printing technology.
