Indiana University Professor of History; a native of rural Indiana, Esarey had completed his bachelor's and master's degrees and begun his doctoral work at Indiana University when he was appointed Research Fellow in the Department of History in September 1911. With that appointment he became the driving force in the newly formed Indiana Historical Survey, which was to gather as many as possible of the resources for writing Indiana history to support the 1916 centennial of statehood.
