Book designer, typographer and printer. Frederic Warde (1894-1939) was best known in the field of graphic arts as a book designer and in association with the Arrighi typeface. He was also a writer, editor, and, on occasion, a perfumer. After service in World War I, Warde worked as an editor at Macmillan? though they would eventually divorce, his ex-wife would achieve her own fame in the world of graphic arts as Beatrice Warde. Warde became designer for the Princeton University Press (1922-24) and published his Bruce Rogers: designer of books in 1925. He then spent several years in Europe where his projects included overseeing Giovanni Mardersteig's Officini Bodini. His interest in and practice of calligraphy led him to translate the chancery cursive letter forms of Ludovico degli Arrighi into type. Mardersteig printed The calligraphic manual of Ludovico Arrighi ... a complete facsimile (1926) which Warde issued in Paris where he was designing for the Pleiad Press. On his return to the United States he worked again for Rudge (1927-32) and also designed for such private presses as Crosby Gaige, Watch Hill, Bowling Green, the Limited Editions Club and Heritage Press. His work for the Limited Edition Club included editing the first number of its ambitious graphic arts periodical The Dolphin. Warde's last position was as production manager for the Oxford University Press. He died in New York Cit y in July 1939. A small collection of work, drawn from the collection of.
