Based on a simple melody of the Brothertown Indians. One of ten sketches originally composed for solo piano, 1896.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
Edward Alexander McDowell, American composer, pianist, and teacher, was born in New York on Dec. 18, 1860. He began the study of music as a child with Juan Buitrago and Teresa Carreño, then traveled to Paris in 1876 to study at the Conservatoire with Marmontel. Further study continued in Germany in 1878 with Carl Heymann and Raff. By 1880 he was supporting himself as a piano teacher, which he did until 1885. In 1884 he married Marian Nevins, and they eventually settled in New York. MacDowell taught at Columbia University until 1904. The MacDowells founded the MacDowell Colony at their farm in Peterborough, N.H. to encourage developing artists. His health began to fail in 1905 and declined until his death in New York, on Jan. 23, 1908.
American composer, musician.
Edward Alexander MacDowell was professor of music at Columbia University.

Schwab, Arnold T. Arnold T. Schwab collection, 1876-1988 (bulk 1929-1955).
Title:
Arnold T. Schwab collection, 1876-1988 (bulk 1929-1955).
The Arnold T. Schwab Collection is an archive of materials related to the life and work of Marian Nevins MacDowell, wife of composer Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) and founder of the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Schwab collected these materials in preparation for a biography of Marian Nevins MacDowell, a work that was never completed. Included in the collection is a large cache of MacDowell-related correspondence: letters, mostly photocopies, to and from Edward MacDowell, letters, mostly photocopies, to and from Marian Nevins MacDowell, and others assembled from a variety of sources. In the Arnold T. Schwab series of correspondence there are copies of Schwab's letters to various friends and acquaintances of the MacDowells and MacDowell Colonists along with the responses. Some notable correspondents include: Carl Carmer, Aaron Copland, Mabel Daniels, Marjorie Chandler Hazard, George Kendall, Nina Maud Richardson, Cecil Smith, Conrad Spohnholz, Louise Talma and many others. A large group of index cards organized by various subjects and, apparently, gleaned from the above described correspondence, capsulize various aspects of Schwab's research. In addition to photographs of the MacDowells and some of their acquaintances, there are a group of scrapbooks, assembled by Schwab and organized by date.

Chadwick, G. W. (George Whitefield), 1854-1931. George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
Title:
George Whitefield Chadwick collection, 1873-1936, (bulk 1885-1930).
In the first series there is a smattering of professional correspondence from 1904, however the majority spans the years 1910-1931. The trove of over 1500 personal letters to/from Chadwick and/or Mrs. Chadwick includes substantial correspondence from Frederick Converse, Henry Higginson, Helen Hopekirk, Horatio Parker, Frederick Stock, Carl Stoeckel, Templeton Strong, and Theodore Thomas, as well as limited correspondence from Amy Beach, Walter Damrosch, Antonin Dvorak, Gabriel Faure, Arthur Foote, Isabella Stewart Gardner, Percy Grainger, Henry Hadley, Charles Loeffler, Edward MacDowell, Walter McEwen, Josef Rheinberger, Jean Sibelius, John Phillip Sousa, and Leopold Stokowski. The photograph series includes: a small number of Chadwick portraits; Chadwick family photos; several group photos taken at the Bohemian Grove (San Francisco) of Chadwick with colleagues including Clarence Eddy, William McCoy, Henry Hadley, and Joe Redding; staged performance photos from Bohemian Grove; and individual portraits of several other figures such as Frederick Converse, Henry Dunham, Wallace Goodrich, William McCoy, Karl Muck, Horatio Parker and Templeton Strong. Series five consists primarily of Chadwick's date-books from the years 1889-1931 and desk calendars from 1927-1931. Also included are several of Ida May Chadwick's travel diaries, an accounts ledger, and an address book. The sixth series contains over five hundred newspaper clippings, primarily reviews of Chadwick's music, dating from the late 1880s to 1931. Works of Chadwick discussed in these articles include: Antony and Cleopatra, Aphrodite, Cleopatra, Jubilee, Noel, Melpomene, Judith, The Lily Nymph, Phoenix Expirans, Sinfonietta, Symphony no. 3, Symphony in C, Suite Symphonique, String Quartet in E minor, Symphonic Sketches,Tabasco, and Tam O'Shanter. Chadwick's memoirs(diaries) and day-books make up series seven. There are eighteen volumes of memoirs - some bound, and some loose - some handwritten and some typewritten. They span the years of Chadwick's childhood (recollections and family history) through 1930.In addition there are sixteen bound daybooks spanning the years 1905-1930. While the earlier daybooks have little writing in them, the later volumes contain a good deal of writing, making them similar to the memoirs. The eighth series consists of programs, primarily of performances that included Chadwick's music both at and outside of NEC. The writings of Chadwick - speeches, tributes, reports, and articles make up series nine. The tenth series consists of three scrapbooks, presumably assembled by Chadwick himself. The first, consisting of approximately twenty-five pages, includes mainly newspaper clippings from the years 1884-1886, many of which discuss Chadwick's music. Towards the back of the scrapbook there are a number of pages that contain clippings of poetry. The second scrapbook, spanning the years 1873-1896, includes various programs, invitations, articles, and correspondence to Chadwick. The third volume in this series which dates from 1904-1906 is a combination scrapbook/memoir. It contains programs and clippings, many of which are accompanied by Chadwick's handwritten annotations. This volume also contains some daily journal entries, mainly from January-May 1906. Title:
Papers, 1876-1964.
Letters and manuscripts of MacDowell. One group was written to Arthur P. Schmidt, his publisher during MacDowell's years as professor of music at Columbia University. These letters concern the publication and distribution of his compositions and his copyright difficulties with other firms, especially Brietkopf & Härtel. There are eight letters from MacDowell to the American pianist, composer, and pedagogue William Mason. This personal correspondence deals with such things as musical pieces dedicated by each man to the other. A diary and letter book belonging to Marian N. MacDowell (Mrs. Edward) contains draft copies of letters to Nicholas M. Butler and others relating to his controversial career at Columbia University. Also, photocopies of eight letters from the Mary Flagler Cary Music Collection at the Morgan Library. Among the numerous musical scores and sketches are his INDIAN SUITE and the SONATA TRAGICA. Also, two original drawings of MacDowell by Orlando Rowland; and correspondence, manuscripts, catalogs, and other materials relating to the MacDowell Exhibition at Columbia University in 1938.

A.P. Schmidt Company. A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
Title:
A.P. Schmidt Company archives, 1869-1958 (bulk 1895-1920).
The A.P. Schmidt Company archives contains music, correspondence, business and financial records, and related documents. These materials provide a detailed look at the management, daily operations, and history of the Schmidt firm. In the music series, which contains manuscripts and some printed music and is the largest part of the collection, are examples of music composed by Americans at the turn of the twentieth century and selected for publication by Schmidt. The majority of the music in the collection is in autograph form; some are holographs in the hand of the composer and many are the work of Schmidt company editors and arrangers. It is from these manuscripts that the Schmidt company prepared its publications. The music in the collection is principally for voice, chorus or piano, with some examples of large-scale orchestral music as well. It should be noted that none of the manuscripts of Edward MacDowell, one of Schmidt's most important composers, accompanied the collection to the Library of Congress. It may be assumed that after MacDowell's death, most of his manuscripts were returned to his widow, Marian MacDowell (see the Edward and Marian MacDowell Collection). Among the major correspondents in the collection are Edward Ballantine, Florence Newell Barbour, Floy Bartlett, Mrs. H.H.A. Beach, Robert Braine, Gena Branscombe, F. Leslie Calver,Rosseter G.
