Based on 3 melodies of western Pennsylvania. The composer believes that Dunlap's Creek, a variant of an old hymn melody, is named for Dunlap's Creek Presbyterian Church, founded near Pittsburgh in 1787. This variant was first published in 1813 and has been ascribed to Freeman Lewis (1780-1859). I'm a beggar probably originated as a Negro spiritual. John Riley is the British ballad. Commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Composed 1946-47. First performance Syria Mosque, Pittsburgh, 21 November 1947, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Fritz Reiner conductor.
