Monroe, James Madison, 1822-1851. Journal, 1841-1845.
Title:
Journal, 1841-1845.
Includes summary of Monroe's activities from September 1841 through June 1842, including his conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and activities as clerk of the Utica (New York) Conference. Then follows attendance record for a school he taught at Nauvoo, Illinois, August 1842- January 1843 and November 1843-March 1844. Last part of journal tells of his service as teacher of the children of Joseph Smith, John Taylor, and Brigham Young, April-May 1845. Typed title page misidentifies the journal as being kept by Howard Egan and indicates that manuscript copy was made by Egan's son, William M. Egan.

Garnett, James M. (James Mercer), 1770-1843. Papers, 1806-1840.
Title:
Papers, 1806-1840.
These papers represent some of the chief interests of Garnett's life: Virginia and national politics and government, political philisophy, and agriculture. The papers include four letters from Garnett to James Hunter, 1807-1823, all dealing with politics at the state and national level. There are six letters from Garnett to R.M.T. Hunter, his nephew, from December 21, 1835-April 7, 1840; these comment on Virginia and national politics and offer guidance in his political career. Transcripts of letters exchanged between Garnett and John Randolph of Roanoke, December 25, 1809, and January 9, 1810, comment on Randolph's health and the general political scene. There are two letters from John Taylor of Caroline: one dated January 28, 1806, requesting Garnett to inform Mr. Key of the delays in a case he was to present in court; and another dated February 7, 1823, regarding the growth of federal power and the need to understand the workings of Congress in order to achieve results. There are two letters, Dec. 6, 1807, and Jan. 27, 1808, from Garnett which cover the local and national political scene of the time, including opposition to the trade embargo and the Republican caucus of 1808. An anti-protective tariff essay, ca. 1820 is entitled "The Memorial of 'The Virginia Society for promoting Agriculture' to the Congress of the United States ..." is included, as are other attacks against the protective tariff by the Virginia Agricultural Society of Fredericksburg. "To Res No. 2" and "To Res. no. 3," ca. 1820, reply to a series of articles in the Washington Aurora which attacked "Remonstrance of the Virginia Agricultural Society of Fredericksburg." "Familiar Dialogue between two old political Cronies - a New Yorker, and a Virginian," and "Dialogue the second. Between the two old political Cronies. Scene Richmond, Va." ca. 1837-1840, are whimsical discussions on the evils of party politics and Martin Van Buren's presidency, and promote the Whig Party. "An argument in the favour of Infant Baptism," and notes and Biblical quotations on infant baptism, ante 1843, discuss historical and Biblical precedents. Finally, a weather and agricultural journal, Jan.-Nov. 1815, gives detailed weather and farming observations.

McNiece, Robert G. (Robert Gibson), 1839-1913. Westminster College Dean Robert G. McNiece scrapbooks, 1879-1903.
Title:
Westminster College Dean Robert G. McNiece scrapbooks, 1879-1903.
This collection consists of three scrapbooks compiled by Robert G. McNiece as early as 1887. Each scrapbook has been filled with newspaper articles regarding issues faced in Utah by the Presbyterians, such as Mormons and polygamy. In many cases, McNiece only included the clipping itself without attribution. While he was collecting articles from local papers (at least one article is noted as having come from the "Salt Lake Tribune"), many of the publication sources are unknown. The topics detailed in each scrapbook are similar. McNiece made a brief notation about the focus of the scrapbook, on or near each inside cover. McNiece's notations reflect the contents in very brief terms, and do not serve to describe any specific issue. The first scrapbook details Mormonism, with attention paid to polygamy, LDS presidents (John Taylor); no starting date is indicated. The second scrapbook is given the notation Mainly about Utah and is dated 1887. This book focuses on politics, the B. H. Roberts case (the Congressional unseating of Roberts), and polygamy. The third book is designated Utah and Mormon Affairs and is also dated 1887. This book addresses the same topics as the other two, but in a broader and more inclusive way.

Title:
Diaries and autobiography of Hosea Stout, c.1820-1915 (bulk 1844-1870)
Facsimile and facsimile typescript of Hosea Stout's extensive diaries and autobiography, kept almost daily from 1844 until 1861 and again from 1869-1870. The autobiography traces Stout's early life from about 1820 until 1835. The diaries provide a narrative of Stout's life from his time in Nauvoo until his later life in Utah, including descriptions of his time in Garden Grove, the Camp of Israel, and Salt Lake City. Early entries focus on mob violence against Mormons in Illinois, the arrest of John C. Elliott for the death of Joseph Smith, Stout's service in the Nauvoo Legion, his overland travel to Utah, and encounters with Sioux, Pawnee, and Omaha Indians. His entries from Utah include detailed accounts of his work in the state legislature, his legal career and cases heard (including the trial of Howard Egan for the murder of James Monroe and of an "Indian boy indicted for murder of Cap. J.W. Gunnison and others"), and his time as Speaker of the House of Representatives. The diaries also cover his travels from Utah to Los Angeles and San Francisco en route to his mission in China, his ocean voyage to China, his brief stay there due to hostile reaction against the Mormon missionaries, and his return to California. Other events referenced include the development of the Deseret Alphabet and the Utah War, as well as Stout's family life and church activities. References are made throughout the diaries to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Orson Hyde, Charles Rich, Allen Stout, Heber Kimball, John D. Lee, Orson Pratt, and Willard Richards. The typescript also includes a supplemental volume of letters and documents related to Stout, as well as a general index and name index for both the diaries and the supplemental volume. Some of the letters and documents include letters sent by Stout from 1832-1853 (including those to his wife Surmantha while he was in hiding in Far West in 1838 and to his wife Louisa from San Francisco in 1853, when unknown to him she had already died); letters sent to Stout from relatives, acquaintances, and church leaders from 1829-1869, including those from Brigham Young and Utah congressman William H. Hooper; certificates and documents relating to Stout's legal and church careers, including those from Joseph Smith and Illinois governors Thomas Carlin and Thomas Ford; notes from Stout's time as clerk for the High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo in 1840; Bible inscriptions with Stout genealogy; a list of members of the Nauvoo Legion; songs and poems; phonetic charts of the Deseret Alphabet; and a journal history with a chronology and additional notes on Stout and his diaries from 1839-1889.

Journal of Henry Ballard, 1852-1904.
Typescript of a journal kept by Henry Ballard from the time of his departure from England in 1832 until 1904. Ballard travelled frequently throughout Utah and to Wyoming, and included is a careful record of these travels. Much of the journal focuses on his daily life in Logan, Utah, as well as descriptions of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints activities and leaders, including Joseph Young, George Albert Smith, and John Taylor. Lunt, Edward. A remarkable prophecy by president John Taylor, 1951.
Title:
A remarkable prophecy by president John Taylor, 1951.
Typewritten revelation written down by Edward Lunt. Lunt claimed that the material in the revelation was told to him by his mother many times. His mother supposedly got the information from the third president of the Mormon Church, John Taylor (1808-1887). Sometimes called the "Horseshoe Prophecy" the revelation states that there would be a major falling away from the leadership of the Mormon Church, that blood would run in the gutters of Salt Lake City, Utah, and that the faithful Mormons would go south and form a camp in the shape of a horseshoe.
