Logan, Utah was settled on May 6, 1859 when the first company arrived and set up camp on the north bank of the Logan River.

Henry Ballard was born in Thatcham Berks, England, on January 27, 1832. He attended school for a time before beginning farm work in 1845. Ballard suffered a serious bout of typhoid fever in 1849, and after his recovery he and his parents converted to Mormonism. In 1852 Ballard sailed from Liverpool to New Orleans onboard the Kennebec. He survived the explosion of the steamship Saluda in Lexington, Missouri, on April 9, 1852. Ballard settled in Salt Lake City, and fought in the Utah War from 1857-1858. In 1859 he moved to Logan, Utah, and married Margaret Reid McNeil in 1861. In 1867 he married her sister Emily McNeil as a plural wife, and married a third wife in 1899. In 1877 Ballard became the Bishop of the second ward of Logan City, and served on a mission in England beginning in 1886. He died in Logan in 1908.

Emigrated to Utah from England in 1852, eventually settled in Logan. Was a farmer and active in church work. Participated in resistance to Utah Expedition, was sent to Missouri River in 1864 to rescue emigrants. Active in Nauvoo Legion.
