John Daniel Thompson McAllister, known as the author of the "Hand Cart Song," was born in Lewis, Delaware, on February 19, 1827. He moved to Philadelphia in 1844 and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847. He moved briefly to Council Bluffs, Iowa, before traveling to Salt Lake City in 1851. McAllister was a major in the Nauvoo Legion, a member of the Deseret Dramatic Association, chief engineer of the Salt Lake City Fire Department, served as Utah Territorial Marshal, and in 1877 was made president of the St. George Stake and also served as president of the St. George Temple from 1884-1893. He died in St. George, Utah, on January 21, 1910.

John Daniel Thompson McAllister (1827-1910) was an LDS convert who became the president of the St. George and Manti LDS temples.
John Daniel Thompson McAllister was born in Lewes, Delaware on 19 February 1827. He joined the LDS church in Philadelphia in 1844 and emigrated to Utah in 1851. He was president of the St. George and Manti LDS temples. He died 21 January 1910 in St. George, Utah and is buried in the St. George city cemetery.
