Alonzo Orson Perry was born in Lewis, New York, on May 17, 1836. His father had converted to Mormonism and in the early 1840s the family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where Perry was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In around 1846 the family began moving west, first to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and finally to Weber County, Utah, in 1850.
