William Holman Hunt was an English artist and painter. Despite his father's objections, he sought a career as an artist, and studied art at the Royal Academy, where he met Millais and Rossetti; the three of them co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. He was extremely popular with the general public.

Caine, Hall, Sir, 1853-1931. Letters of Sir Hall Caine, 1895-1928.
Title:
Letters of Sir Hall Caine, 1895-1928.
Caine writes to S.S. McClure, 1895 July 12, requesting that Robert Harborough Sherard do a character sketch of him rather than an interview. In a letter to D. Appleton Company, 1895 October 3, he explains that he cannot give an answer to an invitation until he has decided whether or not to accept Major James Burton Pond's offer of a lecture tour. In a letter to S.S. McClure, 1896 February 11, he attributes his tardy reply to work on his new book. He discusses his tentative plans to complete a life of Christ which he wants to discuss with William Holman Hunt and Frederic Shields, and his decision on a publisher and on accepting Major Pond's world tour offer. He briefly mentions his purchase of Greeba Castle. The collection also contains an autograph for Isabel Booth, 1928 September 19.

Autograph letter signed : place not specified, to William Allingham, [1854] Sept. 19.
Concerning his illustration for Allingham's poem "The Maids of Elfin Mere;" discussing Hunt's designs and praising one or two as "remarkably original;" describing his continued work on a design for the Folio and resolving on Hamlet and Ophelia for a subject; discussing Allingham's poetry; mentioning mutual acquaintances and contemporary literary publications. Noting "I've also read some of The Stones of Venice, having received all Ruskin's books from him, a really splendid present, including even the huge plates of Venetian architecture." Praising Wuthering Heights, but noting "it is a fiend of a book -- an incredible monster, combining all the stronger female tendencies from Mrs. Browning to Mrs. Brownrigg. The action is laid in Hell -- only it seems places & people have English names there." Discussing his translations of Italian poetry.

Reporting that he has finished the woodblock (of the illustration for Allingham's poem "The Maids of Elfen Mere") and discussing the publication of Allingham's poems. Mentioning that Moxon asked him to contribute designs (with Millais, Hunt, Landseer, Stanfield, Maclise, Creswick, Mulready and Horsley) for the new edition of Tennyson, and noting that he finds drawing on wood to be "particularly trying to the eyes." Mentioning that he began his class at the Working Men's College the previous evening, noting that it is "quite a separate thing from Ruskin's who teaches foliage." Mentioning that Miss Howitt and Barbara Smith are both ill and alluding to Miss Siddal's health, remarking that she "bears the cold weather ... and of course progresses always as an artist." Mentioning Woolner, Millais, Hunt, Ruskin, and other mutual acquaintances. Remarking on his translation of Italian poetry and copying out his sonnet "A Dark Day" (first line: "The gloom which breathes upon me with these airs").

Title:
Personal and family papers, ca. 1833-1930.
Chiefly correspondence of William Holman Hunt, with some correspondence of his wife Edith and other family members, and commonplace books of Edith and his father, William. The collection has been assembled from various sources, but includes a substantial family archive (formerly acession 870644). Hunt's letters contain extensive information on the Pre-Raphaelites, his own development as an artist, and his travels in the Middle East. His incoming correspondence includes letters from the writer Maurice Hewlett, the painters Walter Deverell, Edward Lear, Ford Madox Brown and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and the critics John Ruskin, Frederic George Stephens and William Michael Rossetti. Taken together, Hunt's correspondence constitutes an important source on the English art scene in the second half of the nineteenth century. The commonplace book of William contains the only known manuscript copy of the "List of Immortals," the manifesto of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood set down in 1848 by Holman Hunt and Rossetti.

Shields, Frederic, 1833-1911. Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Title:
Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Twenty three letters by Shields (ca. 1873-1909) together with sixteen letters received (1877-1909), mostly from British artists. Included are seventeen letters from Shields to Herbert P. Horne (ca. 1886-1897), editor of the "Century Guild Hobby Horse", a journal dedicated to the revitalization of the decorative arts. Shields discusses his relations with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poetry of Christina Rossetti, Horne's work, and the reproduction of works of art in the journal. In a later letter (1908), Shields acknowledges his debt to Rossetti, noting "Lovely was he, though weak and inconsistent as myself." Letters received include three from Sir Edward Poynter (1891, 1894), two from G. F. Watts (1891, 1901), two from Sir Hubert Von Herkomer (1877), and letters from Walter Crane (1909) and Noel Paton (1896). One of Poynter's letters (1891) mentions Burne-Jones and Millais. Watts states that, because of his lack of independent means, he has been obliged to paint portraits in order to live and this has impeded his true aspirations (1891). He also discusses Shields' designs for murals for the Chapel of the Ascension (1901). Herkomer's letters relate to lithography and his portrait of Richard Wagner and Paton's praises Shield's "Angel of the Chimes", mentions Eaton Hall, and comments on the death of Frederic Leighton. Arranged chronologically.
