Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.

Twenty three letters by Shields (ca. 1873-1909) together with sixteen letters received (1877-1909), mostly from British artists. Included are seventeen letters from Shields to Herbert P. Horne (ca. 1886-1897), editor of the "Century Guild Hobby Horse", a journal dedicated to the revitalization of the decorative arts. Shields discusses his relations with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poetry of Christina Rossetti, Horne's work, and the reproduction of works of art in the journal. In a later letter (1908), Shields acknowledges his debt to Rossetti, noting "Lovely was he, though weak and inconsistent as myself." Letters received include three from Sir Edward Poynter (1891, 1894), two from G. F. Watts (1891, 1901), two from Sir Hubert Von Herkomer (1877), and letters from Walter Crane (1909) and Noel Paton (1896). One of Poynter's letters (1891) mentions Burne-Jones and Millais. Watts states that, because of his lack of independent means, he has been obliged to paint portraits in order to live and this has impeded his true aspirations (1891). He also discusses Shields' designs for murals for the Chapel of the Ascension (1901). Herkomer's letters relate to lithography and his portrait of Richard Wagner and Paton's praises Shield's "Angel of the Chimes", mentions Eaton Hall, and comments on the death of Frederic Leighton.
