Letters, ca. 1900-1927.

The earlier letters include fifteen to Henry Newbolt (ca. 1900-1903), with references to illustrations for one of Fry's books, his lectures on art, his illustrations in the Monthly Review, Holman Hunt, Julia Mary (Cartright) Ady, the literary sources of a Signorelli painting, Vincenzo Foppa, and his views on the decline of religion as a vehicle for satisfying man's imaginative needs. A 1901 letter to a Mrs. Holroyd mentions the preparation of tempera pictures for the New Gallery, and a letter of 1905 to Sydney Cockerell concerns a manuscript at Oxford thought to have been illuminated by one of the Limbourg brothers.
