Letters from four English artists, ca. 1825-1925 (bulk 1846-1878)

A collection of letters from and relating to various English artists. Edward Henry Corbould letters from (mostly addressed to Henry Mogford of the Crystal Palace Company dating between 1846 and 1879) and notes: thirty-three pieces including a black-and-white photograph (portrait of Corbould), an engraving, two drawings, and an exhibition document for materials exhibited during the American Exhibition of British Art. Joseph Mallord William Turner letters: two pieces, one letter from Turner to Charles Stokes, his stock broker, that includes a wax seal and a watermark dated 1825, and one from Stokes dated 1853. William Holman Hunt letter to his friend and fellow artist Spencer Stanhope dated from Jerusalem, 1872 discussing Hunt's work The Shadow of Death (one piece). Roger Fry letter to Kenneth Clark dated 1925 (one piece).

William Holman Hunt was an English artist and painter. Despite his father's objections, he sought a career as an artist, and studied art at the Royal Academy, where he met Millais and Rossetti; the three of them co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem.
