Correspondence, ca. 1890-1916.

Collection consists primarily of correspondence, with miscellaneous notes and drawings. De Morgan's letters include two to Arthur St. John Adcock concerning his painting and providing biographical details (1910), and one to Sydney Cockerell regarding limericks by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1908). Others refer to De Morgan's connection with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and his relationship with William Holman Hunt (1913), and activities during the World War I (1914, 1916). Two letters received by De Morgan relate to his book Joseph Vance (1911, 1914). Other letters, to a colleague, discuss the mixing, application and firing of "lustre" glazes. Two of the letters are in the hand of his wife Evelyn, written for her uncle John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope, establishing the provenance of a painting. Included are notes by De Morgan on the Dickens centenary (1912) and several drawings of children, dragons and fish (ca. 1890).

Hunt's paintings are richly colored and highly detailed; many have religious or moralistic connotations. He made several journeys to the Middle East, and painted scenes of Jerusalem. He was extremely popular with the general public. ...
