Lawyer, businessman, and U.S. secretary of the treasury.
Biographical Note
Born on November 22, 1837, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Franklin MacVeagh was a graduate of Yale College, 1862. MacVeagh received the degree of LL.B. from Columbia University in 1864. Poor health initially kept MacVeagh from establishing a permanent practice, but he was able to serve in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Civil War. Moving to Illinois, MacVeagh established the firm of Franklin MacVeagh & Company in 1866 and served as its president, almost continuously, until 1932. He died two years later in Chicago, Illinois.
Franklin MacVeagh was born on November 22, 1837, in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He received his B.A. from Yale in 1862. MacVeagh studied at Columbia University Law School (1862-64) and received his LL.B. in 1864. Although selected valedictorian of his law school class, a breakdown in health prevented his appearance in that role.
MacVeagh joined with Charlton T. Lewis (Yale, 1853) to form Lewis & MacVeagh, a New York City law firm. Again poor health required his withdrawal from service. He served with the Pennsylvania Militia for a time during the Civil War.
After a respite in Minnesota to alleviate health problems MacVeagh settled in Chicago, Illinois. He established the firm of Franklin MacVeagh & Company, wholesale grocers, in 1866. MacVeagh served as president of the firm from 1866-1909 and 1915-1932. An active public life in Chicago included service as first president of the Citizens Association of Chicago (1874), president of the Chicago Bureau of Charities (1896-1904), vice-president of the Civil Service Reform League of Chicago (1884-85) and the American Civic Association (1905), trustee of the University of Chicago (1901-13), member of the executive committee of the National Civic Federation, and chairman of the First International Congress of Social Insurance (1914). In addition, MacVeagh was also involved with the Municipal Art League and the Chicago Yale Association (1881-82).
In 1894 MacVeagh was nominated by the Democratic State Convention of Illinois for the office of U. S. Senator, but he was defeated in the general election. By 1896 MacVeagh had joined the Republican Party and later served the nation as secretary of the treasury (1909-13) in the administration of President William Howard Taft.
MacVeagh married Emily Sherrill Eames on October 2, 1866. They had five children. Franklin MacVeagh died July 16, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois.

Charles Eliot Norton papers
Title:
Charles Eliot Norton papers
This archive contains letters addressed to Charles Eliot Norton from about 1845 to1908. Norton was a Harvard graduate (A.B. 1846) and professor of the History of Fine Arts at Harvard from 1874 to 1898, with a special interest in the study and translation of Dante. Many of the letters in this collection deal with art and with Dante. In addition he knew a great many prominent figures in both England and the United States, especially those in the political field and the literary and artistics fields. His correspondence with these people often touches upon their public and their private lives. From 1863 to 1868 Norton was joint editor with his friend James Russell Lowell of the North American review. The letters addressed to him as editor are marked in this index by a star (*) and the folders containing them are stamped with a red N.A.R.(=North American Review). In 1898 Norton's opposition to the Spanish-American war led Senator George F. Hoar to criticize him. A list of some of the letters Norton received commenting on this controversy is at the end of this index. Referenced throughout the finding aid is the Excavations at Delphi (scrapbook folder) with a folder designation, such as f.1, f.2, and so on. All folders can be found at item number 5308.

The MacVeagh (or McVeagh, with spellings used interchangeably) collection centers on the papers of Wayne MacVeagh, whose life is well documented through correspondence, legal and financial records, addresses and writings, and various diplomatic materials. Also included in the collection are some papers belonging to the Cameron family, including correspondence of MacVeagh's wife, Virginia Cameron MacVeagh, her parents, and other relatives. Other MacVeagh family members included are Wayne's sons Charles and Lincoln, as well as some correspondence belonging to Margaretta MacVeagh, the daughter of Virginia and Wayne. Rounding out the collection are papers belonging to Charles's sons Lincoln Francis Wayne, and Ewen, correspondence of Wayne's close friend John Pinkerton, Ella Ormsby Warder, and a small amount of scattered family correspondence.

Charles Dewey Hilles papers, 1823-1955
Title:
Charles Dewey Hilles papers 1823-1955
Correspondence, memoranda, speeches, press releases, clippings, printed matter, photographs, and memorabilia documenting Hilles' activities as secretary to President Taft (1911-1913), as chairman and committeeman to the Republican National Committee (1912-1937) and as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (1909-1911). His correspondence as Taft's secretary is of special importance as being originally part of the President's office files. His work as administrator of the Ohio Industrial School (1892-1902) and the New York Juvenile Asylum (1902-1909) is also documented in the correspondence. Family correspondence is particularly rich for the fall of 1911 when Hilles was touring the country with President Taft, and for 1912 just before his appointment as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Correspondents of note include Charles Francis Adams, William Jennings Bryan, Nicholas Murray Butler, Andrew Carnegie, Josephus Daniels, Charles G. Dawes, Theodore Dreiser, Henry W. Farnam, Irving Fisher, Arthur T. Hadley, Warren G. Harding, Charles Evans Hughes, Frank B. Kellogg, Henry Cabot Lodge, Gifford Pinchot, Theodore Roosevelt, Elihu Root, Henry L. Stimson, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Booker T. Washington and George Westinghouse.

Kent, William, 1864-1928,. William Kent letter : Kentfield, Calif., to Franklin MacVeagh, Washington, D.C., 1911 Aug. 25.
Title:
William Kent letter : Kentfield, Calif., to Franklin MacVeagh, Washington, D.C., 1911 Aug. 25.
Manuscript letter on letterhead stationery of William Kent to the Secretary of the Treasury reporting the results of his mission to evaluate the state of banking in Sacramento, California and the parties interested in starting another national bank. Kent reports that the state of banking in Sacramento is adequate, the reputation of a W. W. Basset is "not of the best," and "those owning the California National Bank" are behind the push to starting another national bank "so that the same persons would monopolize the National Banking field and would doubtless protest the establishment by others of another national institution. Kent ends the letter by asserting that his lack of personal knowledge of any of the involved parties means that "Needless to say therefore I am not subject to any bias on the subject whatever."
