Mabel Dodge Luhan (1879-1962), author.
Mabel Dodge Luhan with Frieda Lawrence and Dorothy Brett (left to right). Part of the Dorothy Brett Pictorial Collection PICT 000-494 (Box 12, Folder 42).
Mabel Ganson was born on February 20, 1879 in Buffalo, New York. The only child of a wealthy banking family, she was sent to the finest boarding schools in Buffalo and Manhattan, during which time she began filling journals with descriptions of people, places, and events.
Her first marraige was at age 20, to Karl Evans, who was killed in a hunting accident two years later. Their son, and Mabels only child, John Evans Ganson was born in 1901.
At age 25, she married Boston architect Edwin Dodge. They lived in an Italian Villa near Florence, where her reputation for socializing and people gathering blossomed with the likes of Leo and Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and Edward Arlington Robinson. After 10 years, Mabel Dodge moved back to her 5th Ave. apartment in Greenwich Village. She began hosting "evenings or "salons which were frequented by well known journalists, poets, labor leaders, editors, and actors including John Reed, Lincoln Steffens, Max Eastman, Emma Goldman, Margaret Sanger, and others.
After Mabel and Edwin Dodge divorced, she married artist Maurice Sterne in 1916. They moved to Santa Fe, and then Taos. Mabels affairs in Taos included a mystical attraction to Indians; Antonio (Tony) Luhan, a Taos Pueblo Indian, would become her fourth husband in 1923. She developed friendships with D. H. and Frieda Lawrence, Dorothy Brett, Willa Cather, Georgia OKeeffe, John Marin, and John Collier. It was in Taos that Mabel wrote her books, including Lorenzo in Taos (1932); Intimate Memories, her 4 volume biography, (1933-1937); Winter in Taos (1935); and Taos and its Artists (1947). Mabel Dodge Luhan lived in Taos and remained married to Tony Luhan until her death on August 13, 1962.
Mabel Dodge Luhan was a major cultural figure in the United States in the first half of the 20th century. She is best known as a patron of the arts and writer, author of a multi-volume autobiographical work and books on D. H. Lawrence, Taos, and Taos area artists. There is considerable scholarship on Luhan, and there are book-length biographical studies by Emily Hahn (1977), Winifred Frazer (1984), and Lois Palken Rudnick (1984). Summary information is available in the standard print and online biographical resources.

Women in New Mexico Collection
Title:
Women in New Mexico Collection
In 1976 the Albuquerque chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) held an exhibit at The Albuquerque Museum to honor the contributions of women to the history, culture, and politics of New Mexico. The materials gathered by members of the AAUW in Albuquerque to determine which of the over one hundred women nominated were to be included in the exhibit form the core of this collection. The collection contains correspondence, forms, audio CDs, clippings, and published articles on the women nominated by AAUW members, including explanations of why they were nominated and biographical information on the nominees. All of the women were 19th and 20th century women who were not all New Mexico natives, but who lived here and contributed to the artistic, political, and educational life of the state. Ultimately, thirteen women were chosen for the exhibit. Biographical information, clippings, and recorded interviews with those women comprise folders 5-22. Folders 25-82 contain biographical information and clippings about fifty-six women who were nominated, but not included in the exhibit. The biographical folders are arranged in alphabetical order. Newspaper clippings and publicity for the 1976 exhibit are also included in the collection. The last folder in the collection has brief information about eighty women nominated by the New Mexico Women's Political Caucus as women of note in the 1980s. Other biographical materials on New Mexico women may be added to this collection in the future.

The papers of painter Andrew Dasburg and sculptor Grace Mott Johnson date from 1833 to 1980, with the bulk of the materials dating from 1900 to 1980, and measure 8.8 linear feet. The collection is divided into the papers of Andrew Dasburg (6 linear feet) and the papers of Grace Mott Johnson (2.8 linear feet), and documents each artist's career and personal lives, including their brief marriage, and friendships with many notable artists in New Mexico and New York art colonies during the early twentieth century. Found are scattered biographical, legal, and financial materials. Extensive correspondence (particularly in Dasburg's papers) is with family, friends, and fellow artists, such as John F. Carlson, Florence Ballin Cramer, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Marsden Hartley, Henry Lee McFee, Vera Spier Kuhn, and Ward Lockwood. Dasburg's papers also include letters to Johnson and his two later wives. Johnson's correspondence is also with numerous artist friends and others, including John F. and Margaret Carlson, Florence Ballin Cramer, Jo Davidson, Florence Lucius, Walter Frankl, Lila Wheelock Howard, Henry Lee McFee, Mary Riley, Lee Simonson, Lindsey Morris Sterling, Alice Morgan Wright, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Vera Spier Kuhn. Letters to her son Alfred are quite detailed and revealing. Writings are by Dasburg, Johnson, and others. Johnson's writings include a very brief diary and her poetry. Writings by others are about the Taos and New Mexico art communities. Printed materials about both artists include clippings and exhibition catalogs. There are numerous photographs of Dasburg and Johnson, individually and together, and with friends and family. Of note are a group photograph of Birge Harrison's art class in Woodstock, New York, which includes Johnson and Dasburg, and a photograph of Dasburg with friends Konrad Cramer and John Reed. Dasburg's papers also include snapshots of Florence Lucius, Konrad and Florence Ballin Cramer, Frieda and D. H. Lawrence, and Mabel Dodge Luhan. Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers, 1837-1961
Title:
Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers 1837-1961
The Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas Papers contain manuscripts of writings, letters, clippings, photographs, artworks, and personal papers relating to the life and work of Gertrude Stein and her companion, Alice B. Toklas, and to Gertrude's brother, Leo Stein, an artist and writer. As well as holding the bulk of Stein's literary output (often described as "experimental" or "cubist" writing), the materials document Stein and Toklas' involvement with the literary and art scene in Paris during the first half of the 20th century. Series I, Writings, contains holograph and typescript drafts of the majority of Gertrude Stein's writings, including "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas," "The Making of Americans" (complete with a quantity of notes, or "studies"), "Tender Buttons" and a group of unpublished fragments and carnets, notebooks kept by Stein with preliminary drafts of writings. Series II, Correspondence of Gertrude Stein, contains letters sent from a wide variety of Stein's friends: artists such as Georges Bracque, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso; writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and Thornton Wilder; and acquaintances through many years such as Mildred Aldrich, Etta and Claribel Cone, Robert Haas, Mabel Dodge Luhan,Sir Francis Rose, Virgil Thomson, and Carl Van Vechten. Series III, Third Party Letters and Series IV, Alice B. Toklas Correspondence, contain letters from many of the same people, the latter group containing Alice Toklas's correspondence following Gertrude Stein's death. Series V, Personal Papers, and Series VI, Clippings, gather together various personal affects of Stein and Toklas as well as documentation of Stein's life as reported during her lifetime. Series VII, Photographs, show Stein from early childhood through 1946, the year she died. Prints showing Alice Toklas, various friends, artworks, and locales are included in this series, as are several volumes of prints made by Carl Van Vechten. Series VIII and IX contain numerous artworks and objects given by Stein and Toklas. Included here are a painting by Pablo Picasso and a sketch by Henri Matisse.

Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1967.
Weyhe Gallery displayed works by Dorothy Brett early in her career. Her breathless letters to Zigrosser are full of the progress of her painting; details of life in Taos; difficulty of selling her work and placing it with dealers; praise of her work by John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Awa Tsireh; the exploits of Georgia O'Keeffe, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Frieda von Richtofen Lawrence, and Rebecca Strand; memories of Katherine Mansfield and John Middleton Murry; her growing confidence in her painting; criticism of Aldous Huxley's book Point Counter Point; sharp comments on the death of D. H. Lawrence ("unmitigated stupidity"); the poor art market during the Depression and money trouble. After a silence of 32 years there was an exchange of letters in 1967.

Marin, John, 1870-1953. Letter to Alfred Stieglitz, 1930, Aug. 4-14.
Title:
Letter to Alfred Stieglitz, 1930, Aug. 4-14.
This collection contains one photocopy of a letter written in installments (on August 4, 10, and 14, 1930) from Taos, New Mexico, by John Marin to Alfred Stieglitz. The seven-page letter concerns the Native American dances at Santo Domingo Pueblo. It mentions Mabel Dodge Luhan and Paul Strand. The letter describes the odd mood Marin is in after having seen the dances at Santo Domingo Pueblo, and mentions paintings he made based on the dances in 1929 and 1930, perhaps referring to his 1929 watercolor titled "Corn Dance." Marin also provides insight into his views of Mabel Dodge Luhan (New York socialite-turned- reporter and patron of the artists' colony at Taos, New Mexico). Marin writes that he witnessed two dogs fighting and "Mable [sic] Luhan [sic] came over to have it stopped" as she said "it disturbed her tenents [sic] working -- working Ha Ha." Finally, the author reports on the local government fish hatcheries, mentions the climatic conditions of the time, and adds that "even Mr. Paul Strand has given up a cussing the people for a spell and is enjoying the orgy." This comment is not contextualized further. Thus, the letter reflects Marin's social connections and his opinions surrounding the Taos art colony.

Title:
Carl Van Vechten papers 1833-1965 1920-1940
Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) was a writer, promoter of African-American artists during the Harlem Renaissance, patron of the arts, and photographer. After he graduated from the University of Chicago in 1930, he entered upon a career as a reporter for newspapers that included The American in Chicago and within a few years The New York Times. At the latter he served as an overseas correspondent in Paris and subsequently as an assistant to the music critic Richard Aldrich in New York City. Van Vechten moved to New York City in 1906 with his first wife Anna Elizabeth Snyder, a teacher. After his divorce in 1912, Van Vechten met and married the stage actress Fania Marinoff. Marinoff made her stage debut at the age of eight in a stock company, and eventually developed a successful stage career. Van Vechten's novels include The Blind-Bow Boy, Interpreters and Interpretations, Nigger Heaven, Peter Whiffle, Tiger By the Tail, and The Tattooed Countess. Van Vechten promoted the careers of many authors' works by writing introductions to their monographs. In his second successful career as a photographer, he had the opportunity to photograph, and to have himself photographed, with many literary figures, stage and screen stars and others. Papers reflect Van Vechten's social life and professional career as a writer, photographer and patron of the arts; they also document Van Vechten's literary and artistic circle of friends and colleagues. An avid collector, Van Vechten retained the letters of prominent individuals who corresponded with him including Ralph Barton, James Branch Cabell, Arthur Davidson Ficke, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Donald Gallup, Langston Hughes, Edward Jablonski, Klaus Jonas, James Weldon Johnson, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Bruce Kellner, Saul Mauriber, H. L. Mencken, Georgia O'Keeffe, Alfred Stieglitz, Florine Stettheimer, and Henrietta Stettheimer. Papers are also rich in Van Vechten's photographs of prominent individuals, and in 19th century photographs of his family in Iowa. Multiple editions of Van Vechten's monographs and the monographs of others add to the diversity of the papers. Many of the monographs have been autographed by the author.

- Austin, Mary Hunter, 1868-1934. Papers of Mary Hunter Austin, 1845-1950 (bulk 1920-1934).
Donaldson family. Letters, 1936-1956.
Title:
Letters, 1936-1956.
This is a collection of letters written to Norman V. Donaldson, his wife Hildegarde, and his daughter Virginia "Midge" Donaldson, by Mabel Dodge Luhan, Dorothy Brett, Robinson Jeffers, and "Eileen Q" (Eileen Quinn, who was sales manager for the University of New Mexico Press). The letters suggest that the Donaldsons were well acquainted with the intellectual and artist scene in Taos, New Mexico, and were kept updated through correspondence with Mabel Dodge Luhan and Dorothy Brett. Luhan's letters to Hildegarde and Norman Donaldson are informal and gossipy, and among other things, chronicle an incident in 1938 in which Robinson Jeffers' wife Una shot herself. Jeffers' letters to Hildegarde Donaldson are in response to the same incident. Letters from Brett to Midge and Norman Donaldson are chatty about the various characters vistiing and residing in Taos. Eileen Quinn's cards to Norman Donaldson are light-hearted and congratulatory about Yale Press publications and publicity.

Elsie Clews Parsons papers, 1880-1980
Title:
Elsie Clews Parsons papers
Elsie Clews Parsons (1875-1941) was trained as a sociologist at Columbia University, but made her greatest achievements in the fields of anthropology and folklore. Parsons' early works in the field of sociology dealt primarily with gender roles, conventions of society, and the effect of society's pressures on the individual. After a trip to the American Southwest with her husband in 1910, Parsons' interests turned to anthropology. She began making field trips to Arizona and New Mexico and, under the influence of her friend Franz Boas, Parsons recorded in meticulous detail data on social organization, religious practices, and folklore of the Southwest Indians. Concurrently, Parsons conducted research in folklore, concentrating on folk tales of Afro-Americans and Caribbean peoples. She was active in a number of professional associations and was the associate editor of the from 1918 until her death. The Parsons Papers were acquired as two separate accessions and remains organized in two distinct subcollections. Subcollection I (572 P35), acquired in 1949, contains approximately 12 linear feet of materials focused on Parsons' career in anthropology. Subcollection II, acquired in 1985, consists of 26.25 linear feet of materials divided into ten series, covering a larger scope of Parsons' life, including family and personal correspondence.

Title:
Idella P. Stone Personal Papers and Records of Palms, 1922-1960.
The Works Series is composed of holograph and typescript manuscripts of Stone's poetry as well as various advertisements, lists, and notes regarding Palms. Of particular interest may be Stone's recounting of her collaboration and friendship with D. H. Lawrence, "D. H. Lawrence Revises some Poems." The Correspondence Series is particularly noteworthy due to its size and the presence of quite a few letters from Stone. The majority of the almost 2000 pieces of incoming and outgoing mail deal with the publication of Palms and include correspondence with both contributors and subscribers, but there are a few personal letters included. Some of the larger accumulations of letters came from Albert Bender, Isaac Benjamin, Witter Bynner, Hildegarde Flanner, Ellen Glines, David Greenhood, Spud Johnson, D. H. Lawrence, Lee Shippey, Harold Vinal, as well as others. The Third-party section contains many letters written to Witter Bynner in his capacity as contributing editor, and to John Weatherwax, Stone's first husband and publisher of Palms after 1927, among others. The Manuscripts Submitted to Palms Series contains a number of manuscripts, poems and articles submitted to Palms, most of them typescript. Some of the primary contributors included Isaac Benjamin, Witter Bynner, Hildegarde Flanner, Warren Gilbert, Leonard Hinton, and Marie Welch.

Johnson, Walter Willard, 1897-1968. Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968).
Title:
Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968).
Holograph and typescript works and correspondence from friends and associates make up the majority of the Spud Johnson Papers, 1896-1973 (bulk 1920-1968), supplemented by letters and diaries by Johnson and works and correspondence by other authors. The Works Series contains poems, short stories, biographical sketches, essays, reviews, and other literary output by Spud Johnson. Of particular note are various drafts of an untitled novel about Don Grant, holograph and typescript versions of Horizontal Yellow (1935), and groups of essays published for "The Gad Fly" and "The Horsefly" columns. The Correspondence Series is divided into two subseries: Outgoing and Incoming. While there are not a great number of letters from Johnson, his correspondence with William Goyen, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Lynn Riggs is moderately well represented. Better represented are friends, acquaintances, and business associates who wrote to Johnson, including Mary Austin, Dorothy Brett, Witter Bynner, Gladys Cannon, Alexander Fechin, Haniel Long, Daniel McCarthy, the New Yorker, Ruth Swaine, and others. There are also a large number of letters from unidentified writers. The Personal Papers Series is composed of Johnson's diaries, many of which are sequentially numbered and contain observations, notes, some day-to-day activities, and some creative work. Also present are a commonplace book, records dealing with the publication of Horse Fly, Horizontal Yellow, and Laughing Horse, and various notes and receipts. Of particular interest are nine etched plastic printing plates used for Laughing Horse. The Third-Party Works and Correspondence Series includes materials by Witter Bynner, Arthur Ficke, Robert Frost, Mabel Luhan, Lynn Riggs, and others. Many of the third-party works were sent to Johnson for inclusion in Laughing Horse and include notes and letters to Johnson from the authors. There are also a number of cover letters to Norman MacLeod, fellow poet and editor. Included in this section are a number of limericks written by friends for Johnson. Third-party correspondents are generally friends and acquaintances writing to each other, often about Johnson or his affairs, and include Dorothy Brett, Arthur Ficke, Mabel Dodge Luhan, Carl Van Vechten, and others.

Brinig, Myron, 1897-1991. Myron Brinig memoirs, circa 1980s.
Title:
Myron Brinig memoirs, circa 1980s.
This collection consists of two versions of Brinig's unpublished memoir. The older version is titled "Someone at the Door: Memoirs of an Outsider." In 1981, Brinig brought this memoir to Earl Ganz to edit for publication. They titled the updated version "Love from a Stranger." Both manuscripts recount Brinig's Jewish heritage, his early life as a writer and work in the Hollywood film industry and his time spent in Taos with other writers and artists including, Cady Wells, Frieda von Richthofen Lawrence and Mabel Dodge Luhan. Also, in the memoirs Brinig openly discusses his homosexuality, a fact he kept private most of his life. Using Brinig's memoirs, Earl Ganz published a novel in 2006 called The Taos Truth Game, which is based on Brinig's time in Taos and his relationship with Cady Wells.

Lawrence, D. H. (David Herbert), 1885-1930. D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Title:
D.H. Lawrence Collection, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935).
Manuscripts of novels, poems, short stories, plays, and other writings, correspondence, transcripts of court hearings, and miscellany trace the writing career and personal life of D.H. Lawrence, 1904-1981 (bulk 1904-1935), as well as popular reaction to his work. The Works series contains drafts of many of Lawrence's major works, including Sons and Lovers, Aaron's Rod, Women in Love, and four versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Also included is a holograph of "Odour of Chrysanthemums" transcribed by Louise Burrows, as well as numerous versions of The Plumed Serpent: Quetzalcoatl and Mr. Noon. Page proofs and paste-ups from the publication of The Body of God, a series of poems by Lawrence produced posthumously, are included. The materials in this series are in a variety of formats including notes and fragments, notebooks, typescripts, galley proofs, paste-ups, and page proofs. The Letters series is extensive and made up largely of holograph letters and notes from Lawrence. The series is fairly evenly split between business and personal matters and several recipients of these letters are particularly well represented, including Lady Cynthia Asquith, Achsah and Earl Brewster, Curtis Brown Ltd., A.W. MacLeod, Knud Merrild, Nancy Pearn, Laurence Pollinger, and Thomas Seltzer. The Recipient series is made conspicuous by its small size. Very few letters to Lawrence are included and most of those that are present deal with business. The Curtis Brown Ltd. Correspondence series, organized chronologically, consists of about 1500 items and includes letters to Lawrence, booksellers, agents, Curtis Brown's lawyers, and various other people involved in the publication and sale of Lawrence's writing. Also included are contracts with Frieda Lawrence for 1933 and 1934, as well as letters, financial statements and listings of copyright accounts sent to her after Lawrence's death. The Miscellaneous series consists of a wide variety of materials directly and indirectly related to Lawrence. A few personal items belonging to Lawrence--passports, address books, bank statements, check stubs--are included. However, the bulk of the series is made up of correspondence between other parties regarding Lawrence's work, transcripts from the American and English obscenity trials involving Lady Chatterley's Lover, and manuscripts of scholarly works about Lawrence. Noteable among the latter category are the complete notes and working manuscripts for F.W. Roberts' book, A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence (1959).

Henderson, Alice Corbin, 1881-1949. Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
Title:
Papers, 1861-1987 (bulk 1920-1949).
The collection comprises correspondence, literary manuscripts, notes and notebooks, clippings, galley proofs, photographs, and date books ranging in date from 1861-1987, reflecting various aspects of not only Henderson's life, but also those of her husband, artist and architect William Penhallow Henderson, and her daughter, Alice Oliver Henderson Evans Rossin Colquitt. Henderson's published and unpublished works are represented by transcripts, notes, galley proofs, and clippings, and her involvement with Poetry: A Magazine of Verse (1912-22) and the Poetry anthologies are reflected in correspondence with editor Harriet Monroe, Ezra Pound, and attorney Roberts Walker. Other correspondents include: Witter Bynner, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence, Vachel Lindsay, Mary Austin, Edgar Lee Masters, Haniel Long, Carl Sandburg, and Ralph Fletcher Seymour, among others. There is extensive family correspondence, notably with Mabel Dodge Luhan, especially during periods of financial and marital difficulity in the 1930s. After Alice and William Henderson moved to Santa Fe, NM, in 1916, they became interested in Native American issues, especially those surrounding the local Navajos. Through their individual talents, the Hendersons founded or supported projects such as the Poet's Round-up, the Navajo House of Religion (now the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian), the Eugene Manlove Rhodes Memorial Association, the Writer's Edition, the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project guide to New Mexico, and the Pueblo-Spanish Building Company, all of which are represented in the collection. Alice Henderson Rossin continued much of her parents' work. She revived the Poet's Round-up in 1968, exhibited her father's art works, and worked with both of her parents' biographers. Her personal correspondence, primarily from the 1930s, includes letters from King Vidor, Lady Bird Johnson, Oliver La Farge, R.F. Seymour, and Jouett and Dorothea Todd, as well as family members. Rossin served as a board member of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation from 1962-78. Family correspondence that she added to this collection includes letters between her second mother-in-law, Clara Rossin, and composer Ernest Bloch, music critic Lawrence Gilman, and violinist Joseph Szigeti, 1912-28.
