Mabel Ganson was born on February 20, 1879 in Buffalo, New York. She was sent to the finest boarding schools in Buffalo and Manhattan. While living in Florence, Italy and later in Greenwich Village with her second husband, Edwin Dodge, she became known for her reputation for socializing and people gathering. David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon.
