Diego Rivera (1886–1957), world-famous Mexican painter and muralist, was also an enthusiastic collector of pre-Hispanic art. Rivera recounted that, as a young boy in Mexico City, he searched for objects that caught his attention in the local public markets, and made purchases on Sundays with his small weekly allowance—a narrative that mirrors Guillermo Echániz’s own origin story as a collector. As adults their two paths would converge and diverge, including in their relationships with Earl Stendahl. Stendahl promoted Rivera’s art in his gallery and beyond, and he spent time socially in Rivera’s circle when visiting Mexico. However, while all three acquired illicitly sourced objects, there was sometimes tension around Rivera’s national and aesthetic ideals as a collector, and Stendahl and Echániz’s practices as dealers. Rivera’s collecting may have been compulsive (he amassed some 59,400 individual objects as an adult), and he did sell objects to collectors and dealers, even out of country, but his motives were not primarily profit-driven. In fact, the acquisition and maintenance of his collection, including the construction of a space he designed to hold it—the Anahuacalli, in San Pablo Tepetlapa, Coyoacán—resulted in a considerable strain on his finances. Rivera had long imagined a home for his collection, and he began concretizing his plans in 1941, the same year that Stendahl and Echániz established their respective gallery-museum homes. In its early years, Anahuacalli served that dual purpose as well. Rivera’s growing visibility as a collector invited acclaim, criticism, and curiosity. Perhaps his most poignant comments on the subject of collecting and collectors appear in a series of interviews conducted with Alfredo Cardona Peña, which were first published as a serial column in El Nacional in 1950, and then collected and published as El monstruo en su laberinto in 1965. The chapter titled “El negocio del arte prehispánico” begins with, the day of an interview, Rivera being accused in the Mexican press of owning stolen artifacts. Rivera disputed this accusation, claiming that, beyond an intense personal interest in the objects themselves, his motivation for collecting at such a large scale was to keep those objects from falling into the hands of traffickers and then being exported to the United States. He also claimed that he had already donated his entire extant collection to the nation. But, while Rivera regularly lent pieces from his collection to state-sponsored exhibitions, and at one point did consider donating his collection and its exhibition space, the Anahuacalli, to the Mexican government, he ultimately decided against it. He did, however, make sure that it would be accessible to the public. Administered through a trust that Rivera set up with the Banco de México, Museo Anahuacalli opened in 1964, several years after the painter’s death, and the same year that the Museo Nacional de Antropología opened in Chapultepec. President López Mateos presided over the Anahuacalli’s inaugural ceremony. Still, the first iteration of Museo Anahuacalli did not realize Rivera’s complete vision for the project, and work continued over the decades based on his original plans, resulting in a greatly expanded space that opened to the public in late 2021.

Getty Research Institute website, May 25, 2022.

Siqueiros, David Alfaro. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1930-1968, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1930-1968, n.d.
The Weyhe Gallery was one of the first in New York to carry the work of the prominent Mexican artists. This correspondence with David Alfaro Siqueiros, through Blanca Luz Brum, mentions his exhibitions and sales, Siqueiros' opinion of Diego Rivera, and the progress of his lithographs. The later letters are associated with Siqueiros' imprisonment in Mexico in 1960 for "social dissolution." Included are clippings about Siqueiros and his art, and exhibition brochures.

Constantine, Mildred. Research papers regarding Tina Modotti, 1920-1993.
Title:
Research papers regarding Tina Modotti, 1920-1993.
The collection consists of research materials Mildred Constantine gathered for her illustrated biography, Tina Modotti : a fragile life (N.Y., 1975). Correspondence includes Modotti's letters to Edward Weston, 1921-31, and descriptive letters to Constantine from a number of people who knew Modotti, such as Imogen Cunningham, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Yolanda Magrini, and Vittorio Vidali (pseud. Carlos Contreras). More biographical material that served as the basis for the book derives from transcripts of interviews with, among others, Fernando Gamboa and Rosendo Gomez Lorenzo. Material regarding Modotti's political activities includes a transcript of Modotti's interrogation by Mexican authorities following the Mella assassination. There are copies of photographs of and by Modotti, including views of her funeral. Clippings, 1920-1993, chronicle the public image of Modotti in her own time as well as since the resurgence of interest in her life and work that Constantine's book in large part engendered.

Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Title:
Department of education, exhibition files, 1970-2003.
The exhibition files document the work of the Department of Education in the planning and implementation of exhibitions from 1970 to 2003. The files include correspondence, proposals, contracts, research, publicity, grants, and creative works illustrating the educational components of museum exhibitions, which include special lectures, symposia, workshops, musical and performing arts events, printed and recorded guides, audio-visual shows, and complementary educational exhibitions. These records also reflect the department's responsibility for exhibition brochures and wall labels through various drafts of copy, galleys, and label books. The finished brochures, printed flyers, and announcement inserts have been placed in Series 13, Ephemera, although duplicates are occasionally included in these files. Ongoing programs held in conjunction with exhibitions, however-such as the Shartle Symposia, Evenings for Educators, or Family Days- are contained within the appropriate program series rather than the Exhibition Files. The amount of documentation varies with each exhibition, ranging from single-sheet listings of educational components for February 1981-April 1982 to multiple files regarding one exhibition. Information on exhibitions held during the 1970s is sparse. Typically, an exhibition file unit begins with General Program Information, including program listings, proposals, budgets, announcements, and bibliographies. Correspondence further reflects the planning and implementation of the programs. Substantial amounts of records on a specific component are given their own file. Exhibitions with extensive documentation include Money Matters: A Critical Look at Bank Architecture (2/4/1990-4/15/1990); The Pen and The Sword: Winslow Homer, Thomas Nast and the American Civil War (8/4/1990-2/4/1991); Rediscovering Pompeii (11/11/1990-1/27/1991); The Sculpture of Indonesia (12/9/1990-3/17/1991); Martin Luther King (two exhibits) (12/9/1990-3/17/1991 and 2/12/1991-7/7/1991); and Leonardo da Vinci: The Anatomical Drawings (6/28/1992-9/6/1992).

The series also includes a small run of photographs of a Ford plant in Mexico City that are attributed to Frida Kahlo and images of Diego Rivera working on the Detroit industry murals at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Negatives are arranged chronologically by negative number; a negative log briefly identifies individual photographs. Researchers should note that a large number of the images in this series were copied and copies were filed in Accession 1660, Photographic Prints Vertical File series.

Durieux, Caroline. Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1972, n.d.
Title:
Correspondence with Carl Zigrosser, 1929-1972, n.d.
Although letters date from 1929, Zigrosser first met Caroline Durieux in Mexico, introduced by William Spratling. With her work on display at Weyhe Gallery, Durieux was in regular correspondence with Zigrosser, writing frequent letters (from Mexico until 1936) about the progress of her work and shipments to the Gallery. Her letters also record life in Taxco, Mexico among the Americans living and visiting there: Natalie Scott, William Spratling, Howard Cook and Barbara Latham, and Hart Crane (written the month of his suicide), as well as news of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Included from this time are photographs of the artist and her Taxco home, and clippings in Spanish about her work. Her letters include responses to Zigrosser's criticism and suggestions -- her satiric subject matter made her paintings and prints difficult to sell. As the Depression lengthened, Durieux returned to her native New Orleans and worked there as an artist, educator (Louisianna State University), and administrator for the Federal Arts Project in Louisianna. Her letters mention family news, comments on aspects of 'southerness,' and her submissions to shows around the country. Her teaching responsibilities at LSU bring printmaking to the fore: she asks for advice about setting-up a good print studio and becomes more critical of print quality, she expands her knowledge of the technical aspects of printing and the building of a well-rounded faculty for the Art Department. The 1950's expanded Caroline Durieux' horizons as an artist. She summered in Paris and began printing color lithographs at Atelier Desjobert. She was instrumental in developing Electron Printing, a controversial technique using radioactive isotopes which allowed the artist to print an unusually wide and subtle range of tones. The correspondence on this topic includes statements written by Zigrosser about the technique, notes about the chemistry involved, and University publicity. Another frequent topic is Durieux' health, which was in decline. She did manage to visit with Carl and Laura Zigrosser throughout the 1950's. There is a gap in the correpondence from March, 1960 to February, 1964. As Zigrosser and Durieux both retired early in the 1960's, the correspondence becomes more personal. A copy of a 1967 letter to Durieux from Elizabeth Anderson (ex-wife of Sherwood Anderson) details the death of William Spratling in Mexico. The letters speak about the changing times and their changing lives. Each decries the appearance of gigantic runs of "fine prints" by prominent artists that are flooding the market. Zigrosser slipped many drafts of his own letters into this correspondence. Included are printed matter such as clippings, exhibition pamphlets, and publicity brochures, as well as photographs of Durieux in the studio, photographs of her work and two pencil drawings of Durieux in the nude by Carl Zigrosser.

General Records of the Department of Energy. 1915 - 2007. Photographs Documenting Scientists, Special Events, and Nuclear Research Facilities, Instruments, and Projects at the Berkeley Lab
Title:
General Records of the Department of Energy. 1915 - 2007. Photographs Documenting Scientists, Special Events, and Nuclear Research Facilities, Instruments, and Projects at the Berkeley Lab
This series encompasses the principal compilation of historical images that document the personalities, structures, technologies, and events shaping the first three and one-half decades at the nuclear research site commonly known as the Berkeley Lab, later officially the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of Berkeley, California. In particular focus is Ernest Orlando Lawrence, the Nobel laureate nuclear physicist, and the founder in 1931 of the University of California Radiation Laboratory that would be renamed in Lawrence's honor following his death in 1958. It was Lawrence whose invention of the circular-shaped particle accelerator, dubbed the cyclotron, opened new frontiers in sub-atomic research, with ramifications--well-documented in this series--ranging from the discovery of the transuranic elements that stretched the boundaries of the Periodic Table, to the development of uranium enrichment methods that speeded the production of the first atomic bomb, to experimental advances that established the field of nuclear medicine. Lawrence is shown in a variety of portrait, speaking, writing, research, meeting, touring, equipment and facility inspection, and ceremonial contexts in and around the Lab and, occasionally, other scientific research locations. Featured, as well, are many of the physicists, chemists, physicians, and engineers who rose to prominence pursuing what Lawrence often called the Lab's "big science" commitment. Included are eventual Nobel laureates Edwin McMillan (successor to Lawrence as Lab Director), Glenn Seaborg (later Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission), Owen Chamberlain, Emilio Segre, Donald Glaser, Melvin Calvin, and Luis Alvarez, as well as such key contributors as John Lawrence (Ernest's brother, and coordinator of the Lab's early medical research ventures), Joseph Gilbert Hamilton, Robert Marshak, Isadore Perlman, Albert Ghiorso, David Sloan, Arthur Snell, Donald Cooksey, William Brobeck, Robert Thornton, Robert Cornog, Paul Aebersold, Edward Lofgren, David Kalbfell, Martin Kamen, Wilfred Mann, Franz Kurie, and Will Siri. Along with the coverage of scientific luminaries, the series provides a visual record of the Lab's evolving infrastructure on the University of California campus, beginning with the "precursor" 1928-1931 quarters in Le Conte Hall, where a newly-arrived Ernest Lawrence conceived and developed the earliest versions of the cyclotron, and continuing with the Civil Engineering Testing Laboratory, an empty building adjacent to Le Conte Hall where Lawrence formally established the Radiation Laboratory. Documented, in turn, are the newly-constructed facilities into which research operations expanded, including the Crocker Laboratory of late 1930s origin, the Donner Laboratory built in the early 1940s for the growing medical research program, and, most prominently, the massive structure on Charter Hill, constructed during the World War II years to house the 184-inch cyclotron, and serving as the Lab's long-term headquarters. The latter facility receives particularly close photographic attention, from ground breaking ceremonies through phases of construction, completion, and operation. As for subsequent additions, views of the 1964 dedication ceremony for the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics underline the increasing diversification of Lab research activities in the latter half of the 20th Century. Within these facilities, the multiple versions of the cyclotron, increasingly large and powerful, are prime series focal points. Views of Lawrence's first two cyclotrons, with acceleration chambers measuring five inches in diameter and 11 inches in diameter, respectively, set the stage for more detailed coverage of the 27-inch cyclotron of the early 1930s, and heavier coverage still of the 37-inch, 60-inch, and 184-inch cyclotrons that anchored many of the breakthrough projects of the late 1930s and 1940s. Also photographed is the later-edition 88-inch cyclotron, and the cyclotron's technological successor, the synchrotron, or so-called Bevatron, that keyed Lab research from the mid-1950s through the 1960s and beyond. Overviews and installation views of these mechanisms are accompanied, especially in the case of the 37-inch, 60-inch, and 184-inch versions, by numerous closeups of individual components, large and small, from magnets, dees, coils, tanks, pumps, switches, oscillators, deflectors, probes, and targets to water cooling lines and radiation shielding, and from control panels to pulse transformers to ionization chambers. In the case of the 184-inch cyclotron, photographs also suggest the multiple applications of the technology during these decades: originally designed to produce particle acceleration at unprecedented speeds, the mechanism's 4500-ton magnet was put to work for uranium separation purposes in 1942 in support of the Manhattan Project (cyclotron turned "calutron"); at war's end, the calutron was reconverted to synchrocyclotron status for pure research. In addition to picturing the multiple iterations of the cyclotron, synchrocyclotron, and synchrotron, the series sheds light on other innovative Lab apparatus, such as the cloud chamber, the spark chamber, and, especially, the various versions of the bubble chamber--invented by Glaser, further developed by Alvarez--used to trace and record the trajectories of charged particles in transit. The Lab's wide-ranging experiments are represented visually through conventional depictions of personnel and instruments, as well as through specialized pictorial forms, including renderings of cyclotron-emitted beam patterns, and x-ray images of monkeys and other test animals injected with adenine or related radioactive substances. Among the many photos relating to particular Lab investigations, discoveries, and milestones (or official announcements thereof) are those showing: the first external beam obtained from a cyclotron (1936); the first cancer patient to be treated with a neutron beam (1938); the pioneering experiments, led by Hamilton and Marshak, on medical uses of radiosodium (1939); the equipment used by Alvarez and Cornog for their path-breaking discovery of the isotope helium-3 (1939); McMillan re-creating his search for neptunium on the occasion of the announcement of the element's discovery (1940); the first spectrum ever seen of an artificially created isotope (mercury-198) made from gold (1940); Seaborg engaged in his pivotal, and ultimately successful, search for plutonium in 1941, and, 25 years later, participating in ceremonies dedicating the site of the discovery (Room 307 in University of California's Gilman Hall) as a National Historic Landmark; the first beam emitted by the fully operational 184-inch cyclotron, noted by Ernest Lawrence, McMillan, and colleagues at the control panel (1946); the Lab announcement of the discovery of machine-made mesons (1948); Lab press conferences and other events revealing the discoveries of the elements berkelium (1949), californium (1950), nobelium (1958), and lawrencium (1961); Seaborg, Ghiorso, and Bernard Harvey re-creating the 1955 discovery of the element mendelevium; Segre engaged in the high-priority 1950s Lab project culminating in the discovery of the antiproton (1955); the christening of the 72-inch liquid-hydrogen bubble chamber, largest in the world (1959); and the announcement of the discovery of the first experimental evidence of the existence of omega meson resonance (1961). International and national award-related events featuring Lab scientists receive considerable exposure in this series. In the case of Ernest Lawrence, there are multiple perspectives on his receipt of the 1939 Nobel Prize--a view of Lawrence receiving the official telephone call informing him of the honor, as well as views of the Western Union telegram providing written notification and Lab blackboard annotations providing the "local" news angle--along with a sequence of 1946 photos showing Lawrence receiving the Medal of Merit, from the head of the Manhattan Project, General Leslie Groves, for his wartime contributions. Also represented are the Lab press conferences and other gatherings marking the Nobel Prize announcements for Seaborg and McMillan (1951) for their transuranic element discoveries, Segre and Chamberlain (1959) for their antiproton discovery, Glaser (1960) for his bubble chamber invention, and Calvin (1961) for his tracking of chemical reactions involved in photosynthesis. Alvarez is shown in yet another high-profile award context, namely, receiving the National Medal of Science (1964), from President Lyndon Johnson, for his contributions to high-energy physics. The increasing fame of the Lab, and its key personnel, emerges in another way in this series, via coverages of numerous visits to the facility by political, cultural, scientific dignitaries. Heading the cast of visitors is President John F. Kennedy, shown touring the Lab in March 1962 along with Defense Secretary Robert McNamara, California Governor Edmund "Pat" Brown, Livermore Laboratory Associate Director and renown nuclear physicist Edward Teller, Atomic Energy Commission head Seaborg, and Berkeley Lab Director McMillan, among others. Documented, as well, are visits by artist Diego Rivera (1940); writer Sinclair Lewis (1940); British physicist Charles Galton Darwin (1941), grandson of Charles Darwin; King Muhammad V of Morocco (1957); Queen Frederika of Greece (1958); Victor Spitsyn, Director of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Soviet Union's Academy of Sciences (1960); Swedish Prime Minister Tage Erlander (1961); U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Adlai Stevenson II (1961); Britain's Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (1962); Britain's Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, with the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon (1965); and the photographer Ansel Adams (1966). Coverage of the Adams visit features a picture within a picture angle, as Adams is shown setting up and carrying out a photo session with McMillan as the prime subject. Visitors are also shown in the context of prominent conferences hosted by the Lab, including such gatherings as the 1960 International Conference on Instrumentation for High Energy Physics and the 1966 High Energy Physics Meeting, with the latter drawing, among others, one-time Lawrence associate, and Manhattan Project scientific director, J. Robert Oppenheimer. While the Berkeley Lab, and the surrounding University of California campus, provides the setting for the vast bulk of the photos in this series, other locales show up in a few shots, including views from Lawrence's 1940 ventures to Purdue University to inspect a cyclotron application, and to Washington, D.C.'s Wardman Park Hotel for a preliminary discussion of the Manhattan Project. Images appearing in this series derive from varied sources. Many of the photographs from the Lab's first decade were taken by Cooksey or other scientific personnel, with scattered Ernest Lawrence shots from his pre-Berkeley days coming from unknown family-related or family-sponsored creators. The majority of the entries from subsequent decades, when a formal Lab photo unit was in operation, come from long-time Lab head photographer George Kagawa, along with staff cameramen Don Bradley, Perry Hamilton, and Doug McWilliams. There are scattered images from the Atomic Energy Commission, White House, and other federal government sources, and scattered items, as well, from commercial media, studio, and other private-sector sources, among them the San Francisco Examiner (photographers Dan Wilkes and William Schoeb, in particular), the Oakland Tribune, Popular Mechanics, Wide World, Pacific Gas and Electric (photographer Richard Hoorn in particular), the San Francisco-based Moss Photography (working for the California Academy of Sciences), and San Francisco Bay area freelance photographer John Brenneis. Several items from an event marking the 40th anniversary of Seaborg's Nobel Prize were generated by Swedish photographers Rolf Adlercreutz and Claes Lofgren of the Stockholm-based firm, Pressens Bild AB. Also included are US Atomic Energy photographs from a Life Magazine Exhibit (1948).

Siqueiros, David Alfaro. David Alfaro Siqueiros papers, 1920-1991, bulk 1930-1936.
Title:
David Alfaro Siqueiros papers, 1920-1991, bulk 1930-1936.
The collection consists almost entirely of manuscripts, some in many drafts, others fragmentary, the bulk of which date from the mid-1930s, when Siqueiros traveled to Los Angeles, New York, Buenos Aires and Montevideo, returning intermittently to Mexico City. Often he gathered teams of artists to work with him on creating murals and developing new techniques and implements for mural painting. Marxist theory as interpreted by the Communist Party guided Siqueiros in these artistic endeavors, and the collection contains a number of manifestos demonstrating how he integrated art and ideology in the organization of his workshops, in his theory of Mexican muralism, and in his painting. A significant portion of the papers concern Siqueiros' public disputes with Rivera; there are manifestos against Rivera, eye-witness accounts of their public debate, and newspaper coverage of the controversy. There is also material regarding the murals "America Tropical" and "Portrait of the Bourgeoisie," including one drawing and a few photographs.

Prentiss Taylor papers
Title:
Prentiss Taylor papers
The collection measures 20.8 linear feet, dates from 1885 to 1991 (bulk dates 1908-1986) and documents the career of Harlem Renaissance lithographer, teacher, and painter Prentiss Taylor. The collection consists primarily of subject/correspondence files (circa 16 ft.), reflecting Prentiss' career as a lithographer and painter, his association with figures prominent in the Harlem Renaissance, notably Carl Van Vechten and Langston Hughes, his activities as president of the Society of Washington Printmakers and other art organizations, his work in art therapy treating mental illness, and his teaching position at American University. The subject files contain mostly correspondence, but many include photographs and printed material. Also included are biographical, financial, legal and printed material; several hundred photographs; notes and writings; sketchbooks, drawings and a few prints by Taylor; and scrapbooks dating from 1885-1956.The Langston Hughes files contain photocopies of letters from Hughes, greeting cards, ten original photographs of Hughes, and an autographed card printed with Hughes' poem, <emph render="italic">The Negro Speaks of Rivers</emph>. In addition, there is a contract between Hughes and Taylor, witnessed by Carl Van Vechten, forming the Golden Stair Press, through which many of Hughes' poems were printed with illustrations by Taylor. A rare edition of their first publication, <emph render="italic">The Negro Mother</emph>, is found here. Also found in this file is a 1932 final copy of <emph render="italic">Scottsboro Limited</emph>, another collaborative effort between Taylor and Hughes that focused on a case where nine black youths were falsely accused of raping two white women. The collection contains extensive correspondence about Taylor's lithograph of the same title and the printing of the publication. Other rare Harlem Renaissance publications found within Taylor's papers include <emph render="italic">Golden Stair Broadsides</emph>, <emph render="italic">Opportunity Journal of Negro Life</emph>, <emph render="italic">The Rebel Poet</emph>, and <emph render="italic">Eight Who Lie in the Death House</emph>, several of which were also illustrated by Taylor.Prentiss Taylor's long association with Langston Hughes and other figures of the Harlem Renaissance stemmed from his early friendship with Carl Van Vechten. Taylor's papers contain correspondence with Van Vechten, autographed copies of Van Vechten's booklets, and numerous photographs of notable Harlem Renaissance figures, many taken by Van Vechten, including Zora Neale Hurston, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Eugene O'Neill, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Paul Robeson, and many others. Also found are period photographs of Charleston, South Carolina and Harlem street scenes.95 letters from Rachel Field, 75 letters from Langston Hughes, 3 letters from Armin Landeck, 46 letters from Josephine Pinckney, 1 letter from Gertrude Stein, 7 letters from Alice B. Toklas, 1 postcard from Mark Van Doren, and 25 letters from Carl Van Vechten are photocopies. Originals of the Hughes and Toklas letters are located at the Yale University Library. Location of the remaining original letters are unknown. The Prentiss Taylor papers offer researchers insight into the rich cultural documentation of the Harlem Renaissance and the development of twentieth-century printmaking as an American fine art.

Title:
Papers of Alexander Z. Kruse, 1890-1972 (bulk 1930s-1960s).
The Alexander Z. Kruse papers contain documents relating to Kruse's career as an artist, art critic, and author. The time frame covered is 1890 to 1975 with the bulk of the material originating from the 1930s to 1960s. The material is arranged by functional series and includes: literary manuscripts and notebooks; correspondence; photographic materials--photographs and slides; ephemera--clippings, catalogs, and biographical material; and books. The majority of the collection is in its original format with a few being photocopies. The photographic materials are in good condition. However, much of the ephemera (especially the newspaper clippings) is extremely fragile. Most of the clippings are from Kruse's columns with the Brooklyn Eagle and the New York Post.
