The Welsh artist Augustus John was a successful painter and draftsman, and a well known bohemian figure. He was in great demand as a portraitist, although his works were often controversial. William Rothenstein was born in 1872 in Bradford. He studied art at the Slade School 1888-9 and in Paris at the Académie Julian from 1889 - 1893.
