Miriam Alice Gerstle (1898-1989) was a daughter of William Lewis Gerstle (1868-1947) and Sara Hecht (b. 1874) and paternal granddaughter of Lewis Gerstle (1824-1902) and Hannah Greenebaum (1838-1930). She was interested in the arts and studied in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Arts (later renamed as the San Francisco Art Institute) and the Art Students League in New York City. She later continued her art studies in Paris at Académies Julian and Grand Chaumière. She began exhibiting in San Francisco in 1915 and from that time on she showed her work regularly in both San Francisco and London. From 1920, she was a resident of London, England, where, on 11 June 1923, she married the architect George Grey Wornum (b. 1888). They had three children: Michael, Jenefer, and Brigit. In 1950, McGraw-Hill published her book, "Portrait in the dark."
