Clyde H. Burroughs (1822-1973) came to the Detroit Museum of Art in 1901 as assistant to Armand H. Griffith, who was then director. In 1904, he became editor of the Bulletin, then assistant director (1914) and later director (1917-1924). Burroughs was appointed secretary of the Arts Commission in 1919, a position he held until his retirement in 1946. In 1924, he was given the additional position of curator of American art. In 1911, Burroughs instituted the annual exhibition of Michigan Artists under the sponsorship of the Scarab Club. He continued to supervise this exhibition until his retirement. During 1933-1934, Burroughs served as the chairman of the District Committee for the Public Works of Art Project. He later became state director of the Federal Arts Project/Work Progress Administration (WPA). Burroughs resigned from this position in 1935, but remained on the Advisory Committee.
