Consists of 1 green morocco writing book with gilt edges and tooling, and 3 pieces of correspondence. The diary contains 8 sections, all written in the same hand, some entries authored by J.W. Wallace, others attributed to close family members. Eight blank leaves are followed by a 4 page memorial of Rebecca Blackwell, 1757-1782. Then 4 more blank leaves, and a 3 page memorial to Joshua Maddox, Esq. Twenty-five blank leaves precede a copy of a letter (6 pages) sent to Susan Bradford Wallace by her brother Horace Binney Wallace concerning the recent death of their father. This is immediately followed by a copy (2 pages) of a letter from H.B. Wallace dated July 9, 1849, to a friend describing the death of his mother. One blank leaf separates this announcement from a copy of a diary entry made by Horace Binney, Esq. on the occassion of the death of his sister Susan Wallace on July 8, 1849 (9 pages). Next are 34 pages of journal entries originally written by Susan Wallace from May 1, 1838 to July 18, 1841. Next is an extract (1 page) from a deposition of Horace Binney in the case of Riddle vs. the city of Philadelphia taken on December 16, 1852, involving a dispute between the estate of Susan Wallace and the city over the ownership of 3,000 acres the city claimed from Stephen Girard. The final entry is a 2 page copy of a letter from Horace Binney to J.W. Wallace dismissing elements of the Reverend Herman Hooker's obituary of Susan Wallace. Forty-three blank leaves make up the remainder of the volume. It would appear that J.W. Wallace intended to leave biographical sketches and memorials of members of the Wallace and Binney family for future generations. Tucked into the front cover are two letters one from Horace Binney dated Apr. 18, 1837, the other from George H. Moore to J.W. Wallace dated Feb. 18, 1878. A folded sheet addressed to J.W. Wallace from his brother H.B. Wallace is dated Sept. 11, 1852.

The collection contains a poem by Charles Henry Wharton sent as a valentine to Wallace; a partial manuscript; and correspondence. Other letters concern his education and the bar exam, his opinion on letter writing, a summary of his trip to Rhode Island including a beach vacation and a negative impression of William Ellery Channing and Unitarianism, the publication of Architecture under his pen name, a suggestion that Robert Hare be appointed president of the American Philosophical Society, praise for the writing of William G. Goddard, and a brief mention of Robert Southey. Two receipts for tuition complete the collection.

This collection contains legal documents related to the firm of William Rawle and his descendants, personal and professional correspondence, and a substantial amount of genealogical material. The personal material is mostly found in the correspondence of William Rawle Sr., William Rawle Jr., William Brooke Rawle, and Rebecca Rawle Shoemaker, as well as journals kept by William Rawle Sr. and Rebecca Rawle Shoemaker. Professional materials document William Rawle Sr.'s career and term as Pennsylvania's U.S. Attorney and William Brooke Rawle's research on the cavalry conflict at Gettysburg. Genealogical material includes numerous newspaper clippings related to the family, a book of family trees, and four large scrapbooks further documenting the family history. A number of related families are also represented in this collection, including the Shoemaker, Brooke, Porter, and Hall families. There are also portraits of various Rawles, as well as a set of portraits produced by the Treasury Department and ostensibly purchased by the Rawles, which includes images of prominent political, military, and literary figures.

The papers document three generations of the Woolsey family. The most prominent figures in the collection are William Walton Woolsey (1766-1839), land owner and merchant in New York City; his son, Theodore Dwight Woolsey (1801-1889), Greek scholar, political theorist and president of Yale College; and Theodore Salisbury Woolsey (1852-1929), professor of international law at Yale Law School, son of Theodore Dwight Woolsey. The papers of William Walton Woolsey contain extensive business correspondence, ledgers, legal papers, documents relating to land sales in New York and Ohio, as well as family and personal letters. Since he was engaged in the importation of sugar, cotton and hardware, some of his business correspondence is political with discussions of the Jay Treaty of 1794, the problems of piracy, American neutrality in the 1790s and the general politics of the period. Important correspondents are Chauncey Goodrich, Archibald Gracie, Eli Whitney, Noah Webster, Elihu and Nathaniel Chauncey, Oliver Wolcott, Benjamin Tallmadge, Jedidiah Morse, James Roosevelt, John A. Schuyler, Comfort Sands, John Broome, and Nicholas Bayard. The papers of Theodore Dwight Woolsey contain his writings on Greek language and literature, the Bible, international law and the texts of his sermons.

Letters to J. Meredith, lawyer in Baltimore, and J. Cowperthwaite at the 2nd Appeals Court in Philadelphia, mostly on legal matters. The first letter, dated June 21, 1844, conveys Binney's hope that a publication Meredith is involved with will do some good, especially in Maryland and Virginia. The second letter, dated Jan. 2, 1834, asks Cowperthwaite for financial statements. The third letter, dated Oct. 4, 1828, asks Meredith for information on the progress of a case and urges him to do all he can for it.

COPE (South Bend, Ind.: 1978). Both the original manuscript and the Emlen typescript are in the Quaker Collection of the Haverford College Library.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

A collection of business records and letter books of prominent mercantile, shipping, and banking firms of Philadelphia. They contribute valuable information on economic trends during the Revolution and the early national period. The record books, 1771-1786, contain accounts of provisions, military stores, equipment, etc., supplied to the Revolutionary army; trade and shipping with England and other countries; privateering and distribution of prize money; goods imported and exported; current prices; financial and legal matters, etc. The record books, 1787-1837, reflect the growth and extension of local and foreign trade; the organization of financial institutions, banks and insurance companies; accounts of municipal enterprises, erection of bridges, gas and water works; transactions in stocks and bonds. Materials in this collection highlight the various business ventures of the Meredith family, documenting Jonathan Meredith's tannery (1772-1811), the overseas mercantile efforts of David Meredith who shipped goods between France and Philadelphia (1794-1797), and also the legal practices and political affiliations of both William (1772-1844) and William Morris Meredith (1799-1873). William's presidency of the Schuylkill Bank and William Morris's several political appointments, including his service as a Pennsylvania state representative (1824-1828), as the secretary of the treasury in the cabinet of Zachary Taylor (1849-1850), and as the Pennsylvania attorney general (1861-1867) are also highlighted. There are a number of Meredith women also represented in this collection, the most notable of whom is Gertrude Gouverneur Ogden Meredith, whose correspondence underscores her literary talents. A number of individuals related to the Merediths and some of their close friends are also represented including the merchant Thomas Hawthorn (Jonathan Meredith's son-in-law), Union General Sullivan Amory Meredith (son of William Meredith), and Port Folio editor Joseph Dennie.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963

The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.
