Robert Hare, an English immigrant in 1773, was a prominent businessman and served in the Pennsylvania legislature and as a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Willing, sister of Thomas Willing, who was a banker and official and legislator in Pennsylvania. Their son, Robert, was a chemist and inventor and taught at the University of Pennsylvania. In the third generation, John Innes Clark Hare was a distinguished Philadelphia lawyer.
