Papers of the General secretary of the Communist Party of the United States from 1930 through its dissolution in 1944. When the Party was reconstituted as the Communist Political Association later that year, Browder was chosen as its President, however he was expelled in 1946 following a debate over Party leadership. Following his expulsion, Browder lectured and wrote about Marxism and represented Soviet writers and publishers for publication in the United States. Collection incluces correspondence/subject files (1879-1970) relating to Marxist philosophy, the workings of the C.P.U.S.A., Browder's role within the Party and to Browder's business ventures as well as legal files (1938-1958); manuscripts (1924-1967) of Browder and others, including Browder's manuscripts for articles, books, memoranda, news releases, pamphlets, reports, and speeches; and memorabilia including personal files and photographs of Browder and his family, and some colleagues. Notable correspondents include Roger Baldwin, Daniel Bell, Bruce Bliven, Rudy Blum, Louis B. Boudin, Juan Antonio Corretjer, Theodore Draper, Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, William Z. William LeGette Blythe (1900-1993), native of Huntersville, N.C., was the author of several Biblical novels, award-winning biographies of prominent North Carolinians, and symphonic (outdoor) dramas based on the history of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, N.C. Blythe graduated in 1921 from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the original Carolina Playmakers and a classmate of Thomas Wolfe. He died in Huntersville in 1993. The collection includes correspondence and other materials relating to LeGette Blythe's literary and civic projects. Included are letters, promotional material, and photographs, as well as audio and video recordings relating to outdoor drama productions and to Blythe's biographies of Thomas Wolfe; Mary T. Martin Sloop of the Crossnore School, Avery County, N.C.; Lucy Morgan of the Penland School, Penland, N.C.; and Gaine Cannon of the Albert Schweitzer Memorial Hospital in Balsam Grove, N.C. Major correspondents include W. H. Belk, Elizabeth Boatwright Coker, William Friday, Louis Rubin, Terry Sanford, and Richard Walser. There are also two letters dated March 1934 from Maxwell Perkins of Charles Scribner's Sons. Also present are materials relating to the North Carolina Writers Conference, including photographs of the conference's first meeting in 1950 and the 1953 meeting in Boone. Manuscripts, galleys, and proofs of Blythe's works are included along with a small amount of materials and photographs collected by Blythe, including items, 1815-1861, relating to the Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Mecklenburg County. The Addition of May 2002 includes audio and video recordings collected by Blythe and photographs of Albert Schweitzer and his hospital from the 1960s; of the United States Army's 38th Evacuation Hospital during World War II; and of labor strikes in North Belmont, N.C., in the late 1920s. The Addition of 2006 includes audio recordings collected by Blythe as research for books, manuscripts and other projects. Interviewees include Fred and Mabel Wolfe, siblings of Thomas Wolfe; Mary T. Robert Chester Ruark (1915-1965), journalist, author, world traveler, sportsman, and syndicated columnist; born in Wilmington, N.C.; received his A.B. from the University of North Carolina, 1935; eventually resided in London, England, and Palamos, Spain. The bulk of the papers of Robert Chester Ruark consists of typed drafts and copies of novels, short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, and screenplays, 1942-1945. Also included is professional and personal correspondence. Other papers relate to Ruark's service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and to his travels and safaris in different part of the world, particularly Africa. His correspondents included friends Ernest Hemingway (one letter and one note, 1953-1954), Bernard Baruch (66 letters, 1953-1965), Richard Nixon (6 letters, 1958-1960), and J. Edgar Hoover (4 letters, 1958-1959); associates, especially his secretary, Alan Ritchie, and his literary agent, Harold Matson; and relatives, especially his wife, Virginia Webb Ruark. The correspondence covers a wide range of personal and literary topics, including journalism, literary philosophy, and African politics.
