Ismar David was born in Breslau, Germany, in 1910. He immigrated to Israel as a young man and lived in Jerusalem from 1932 until 1952. During this period he worked as a graphic and interior designer, and also conceived and developed the David Hebrew type family. Between 1953 and 1996, he lived and worked in New York City, achieving considerable success as a book and book cover designer; book illustrator; lettering artist, calligrapher, and architectural lettering designer; and as an instructor at Cooper Union and Pratt Institute. Ismar David died on February 26, 1996, in New York.
