Edmund Kean (1787-1833) was an English actor associated with the Drury Lane Theatre. An affair with Charlotte Cox, the wife of prominent alderman Robert Cox, led to an adultery trial against Kean in 1825 and his subsequent travel outside of England. Kean returned to the English stage in 1827 and remained acting until shortly before his death in May 1833. With Mary (Chambers) Kean he was the father of actor Charles Kean (1811-1868) .

Kean, Edmund, 1787-1833. Edmund Kean engraved portrait, 1814 June 12.
Title:
Edmund Kean engraved portrait, 1814 June 12.
Edmund Kean was a popular and innovative tragic actor. Most of his childhood was spent on the streets, but he became affilliated with the stage through an uncle's mistress. After a long and exhausting apprenticeship, Kean became a sensation playing Shakespearean villains; a small man with a commanding voice, he played the roles with an energy and an intensity previously unknown. Although his turbulent behavior off stage often made him unpopular, his on-stage charisma remains legendary, and the intensity of his portrayals of villains has had a lasting influence on acting. His son, Charles, was also an actor.

Porter, Jane, 1776-1850. Papers of Jane Porter, 1760-1850.
Title:
Papers of Jane Porter, 1760-1850.
Collection strengths include the family correspondence of Jane Porter, Robert Ker Porter, and Anna Maria Porter spanning the years 1795-1841. The letters describe the social customs of the Regency and early Victorian eras, as well as the family's struggle to maintain an expected place in society despite great financial difficulties. The letters also mention, over the years, various novels, plays, and travel narratives the Porters are writing and publishing. The main weakness of the collection is the lack of manuscript material for Jane, Robert Ker, and Anna Maria Porter.

Collection of theatrical correspondence and ephemera, 1697-1930
Title:
Collection of theatrical correspondence and ephemera 1697-1930
The William Appleton collection consists of letters, handwritten manuscripts, "penny plains" and "two-pence coloured" materials, which were small portraits of actors created for the toy theater trade, a once-popular form of home entertainment. The collection encompasses the late 17th century up through the mid-20th century, although the bulk of the material falls between the mid-18th century and the mid-19th century. The oldest item is a letter from actress Elizabeth Barry to a Lady Lisbourn, dated October 25, 1697. The latest item is a letter from playwright George Bernard Shaw to a J. T. Grien, dated November 28, 1930. The collection contains many letters from prominent theatrical figures, primarily of the English stage, including Ira Aldridge, Dion Boucicault, Edward Gordon Craig, David Garrick, Sir Henry Irving, Edmund Kean, William Charles Macready, Bernard Shaw, Sarah Siddons, Dame Ellen Terry, and others. Also included are black and white portraits known as "penny plains," and color portraits known as "two-pence coloured," depicting actors and actresses of the day in their best known roles. These images were intended for home use in puppet theater-type settings, and most date from the early to mid-1800s, though some date as far back as 1799.

Oakley, Benjamin. Miscellanies, 1802-1829.
Title:
Miscellanies, 1802-1829.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of over a hundred primarily lighthearted songs, poems, and verse epistles, primarily composed by Benjamin Oakley for his friends and family, and documenting such events as routine social activities, his children's weddings, and the deaths of family members and pets. The manuscript begins with a series of military and patriotic songs written at Tooting Lodge; one is addressed to "ye Tooting youth" and exhorts them to defend King and country; another condemns Napoleon; and another laments the death of Nelson. Many of the entries concern the theater, including two letters to the editor on Kemble; several verse epilogues spoken by Miss Booth; and a poem titled On seeing Kean (accompanied by my friend Mr Carne) in the Merchant of Brudges. Other poems are addressed to or concern friends and family members, including poems addressed to his daughters on their wedding days; and an acrostic on his daughter Jane. Also included are poems on the deaths of Oakley's brother r and father. The volume also contains numerous verse letters. Finally, the manuscript also contains poems about Oakley himself, such as one on the Old Drury Club, which praises its members by name, including himself, the Treasurer. Sewn in at the beginning of the volume, with marbled covers, is a printed pamphlet entitled Rules and regulations to be observed by the loyal Tooting volunteers. Sewn in with the pamphlet is a printed letter to "Captain Oakley, late Tooting Volunteer Infantry," informing him that his accounts as Commandant of the Tooting Volunteers have been examined and settled.

Sharp indicates the Royal Shakespearean Club's desire that Southey write an ode to Shakespeare for an upcoming festival. The ode is intended to be recited at Shakespeare's Birthplace and at the Shakspearean Hall, either by Mr. Kean or some other celebrated actor of the day. Also, an envelope labelled: "Letter containing a proposal that Ed. Kean should recite an ode in commemoration of Shakespeare's Birth." Title:
Autograph note by Mr. Sargent responding to Charles Lamb Kenney's Poets and profits [manuscript], ca. 1875.
Note concerns a "curious item" in Charles Lamb Kenney's Poets and profits that indicates that the engagement of Dion Boucicault surpassed in attraction any since Edmund Kean; Boucicault had been paid over £9800 or about $56,000 for his share of severty nightly receipts. On verso, a note signed "A.W." identifies the writer as a Mr. Sargent, who had requested that the note be published. Also, a much later note in the hand of William Winter indicates that the Boucicault production in question was The Shaughraun.

Recipient's last name obscured (referred to as "Captain" and "Sir"). Letter consists of an in-depth analysis of John Philip Kemble and Edmund Kean in Shakespearean roles. Trollope places Kemble as, on the whole, the most accomplished actor she has ever seen, but says that Kean surpassed him in Othello. Hamlet was the great triumph of J.P. Kemble. Also mentions that she considers "Mrs. Siddons' Lady Macbeth as the most perfect piece of acting."

Merivale adds that she hopes Kean "will still live to have great comfort in [her] son." Also mentions her, Merivale's, confinement with her eleventh pregnancy. In (2), dated July 22, 1859 and with the salutation "My dear Mr. Kean," Merivale mentions reading the speech the Duke of Newcastle gave at a banquet given for Kean and wishes his mother could have lived to see him so honored. William Godwin manuscript material : 383 items, 1778-1836
Title:
William Godwin manuscript material : 383 items 1778-1836
William Godwin, English philosopher and novelist. Godwin achieved celebrity at the end of the eighteenth century with the philosophical treatise Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and the novel Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams. His first wife was Mary Wollstonecraft, pioneer for women's rights, and their only child together grew up to become Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein. Godwin's philosophies greatly influenced the political mind of his son-in-law, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. The William Godwin manuscript material in the Pforzheimer Collection consists of writings, correspondence, promissory notes, and various other documents. The writings include: complete holograph manuscript drafts of his works Fleetwood, Coludesley, and Lives of the Necromancers; manuscript drafts of essays from his Enquirer; and proof revisions written in volumes of his Political Justice and St. Leon. The bulk of the correspondence is dated 1795-1834 and mostly discusses Godwin's research, business matters and financial arrangements. Correspondents include: Mary Shelley, novelist (his daughter); Percy Bysshe Shelley, poet (his son-in-law); Aaron Burr, vice president of the United States; Samuel Taylor Coleridge, poet; and over one hundred others. The promissory notes date from between 1804-1818, and are mostly to neighborhood merchants. Other documents include library call slips, memos of agreement for business deals, and Godwin's last will and testament.
