Title:
Papers, 1834-1941.
Papers, 1834-1941, containing personal and political correspondence; notes; printed materials including speeches, pamphlets, periodicals, clippings and scrapbooks, a copybook and typescripts; a diary; notebooks and biographical material. The bulk of the collection, and the most valuable materials, consist of the correspondence, notes and speeches. Among the many prominent correspondents are Jefferson Davis, Earl Russell, Robert Toombs, South Carolina Governor Francis Pickens and Dixon H. Lewis. The correspondence, notes and speeches reflect Yancey's stand on contemporary issues such as states rights, secession, the Democratic party platform, the Civil War, and European recognition of the Confederacy. The clippings and scrapbooks contain articles from many local, regional and national newspapers, and many are reprints of Yancey's speeches and letters. The typescripts are copies of various letters, notes, speeches and articles prepared for publication in the Alabama Quarterly. The diary, although very brief, records Yancey's arrival in Europe. The bulk of the biographical materials and many of the other papers appear to have possibly been gathered by Yancey's biographer, John Witherspoon DuBose. The mileage books, notebooks, periodicals, copybook and the majority of the pamphlets are originals. The political notes and clippings are mostly originals with corresponding typescripts or copies. The correspondence and speeches are primarily typescripts and copies.

Chew family. Chew Family papers, 1659-1986 (bulk 1740-1930).
Title:
Chew Family papers, 1659-1986 (bulk 1740-1930).
The Chew Family Papers is a remarkable collection due to its range, depth, and scope. Nearly every major subject in early American history is touched upon in these papers; the date span of the collection allows for a study of the trajectory of American social, political, and economic development through the lens of one prominent family. This collection is the product of seven generations of the Chew family's professional and personal lives. Many of the papers were created during the late eighteenth through mid-nineteenth centuries, but they continued to be used over the course of the next one hundred years by the family as they settled estates, sold off land, and sought to settle debts. While the papers were an integral part of the management of the family's financial affairs, the Chews also prized the papers as part of their heritage. Around the time of the Centennial celebration in the United States, the Chews began to recognize the legacy of their family in the early history of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, and spent a great deal of time inventorying and describing the contents of the papers. The Chew family became archivists of their own records, maintaining the collection as a whole and retrieving portions of the papers that had been lost or sold during the nineteenth century. They stored some records in safe deposit boxes, and other portions of the collection were arranged methodically throughout Cliveden. They created extensive descriptions of where groups of materials were stored and arranged them by family member, an arrangement that has largely been maintained. Some of these inventories can be found within the collection; others are housed in the collection files, which may be accessed by asking an archivist for permission to view these files. The materials in this collection cover a wide range of topics, reflecting the Chew family's involvement in legal, business, political, private, and social spheres. This extensive collection documents the lives of the Maryland and Pennsylvania branches of the Chew family through seven generations. In addition to the collection's emphasis on the Chew family and their connections within Philadelphia's elite, the papers provide a perspective on the lives of many of the Chews'slaves and servants, and offer insights into family relationships, women's history, health, religion, legal history, the Revolutionary and Civil wars, politics, trade, land management and settlement, surveying, industrialization, and the growth and development of the city of Philadelphia. The focus of the collection revolves around Benjamin Chew, his son Benjamin Jr. and his offspring. Both father and son were influential lawyers, and together amassed large quantities of land in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey. Benjamin Chew Jr.'s land holdings and estate became a major point of contention within the family after his death in 1844. This dispute, which continued for over forty years, was devastating to the Chews'family relationships and fortune, and is a central focus of the collection. The collection is divided into twenty-nine series, with over half of these dedicated to individual family members or family groups. Other series document the family's land holdings, Cliveden, their home in Germantown; the family's genealogical research; and their substantial map collection. The materials range in date from the seventeenth through the twentieth century, but the richest documentation is on nineteenth century life in the mid-Atlantic region. The collection contains business and financial records, cartographic material, correspondence, ephemera, legal documents, personal papers, and other materials created and collected by the Chews during the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Title:
[Letter, 18]57 Dec. 30, Selma, [Vir., to George M. Dallas] / J. M. Mason.
Mason writes to Dallas, the U.S. Minister to England, providing him with the political news of the day. He attacks Stephen A. Douglas as "that little agitator" and continues with "your friend from Philadelphia," James Buchanan, whose "halfway measures in Kansas with Walker to eke them out" have disaffected the South. Mason gives a long account on the illegal capture of William Walker by a Capt. Pauling in Nicaragua. He criticizes the current U.S. Cabinet and refers to the Secretary of State, Lewis Cass, as "a mere cypher."

Title:
Letter : New York to Hon. J. M. Mason, 1853 February 19.
Squier disagrees with Senator Edward Everett's proposal to consolidate U.S. missions in Central America; the cities are too far apart from Guatemala to Costa Rica. Independence for San Juan can only be effected by forcible interposition at the expense of other relations in Central America. England will withdraw her protectorate if the U.S. guarenteed its security. It was an error to negotiate with England. Additional area covered is New York (State).

The collection contains the political correspondence of Alexander H.H. Other topics include national and Virginia politics, the presidential elections of 1848, 1852, and 1868, the reestablishment of a national bank, the Virginia Reform Convention of 1850, the American Know-Nothing Party, and the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Also slavery, abolition, Southern conservative opposition to secession, Virginia elections of 1831, 1851, 1859, 1867, the aftermath of Nat Turner's rebellion, the use of statistics in government, the Confederate Congress, sectional reconciliation after the Civil War, the Readjustor controversy, political patronage, and internal improvements. Also mentioned are Revolutionary War pension claims, migration of free blacks to Liberia, affairs at the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indian Agency in 1851, California politics and Indians in 1851, the Tehuantepec Isthmus route, Iowa in 1851, San Francisco in 1854, New Orleans in 1861, West Virginia in 1861, the U.S.S. Princeton explosion, Dorothea Dix's efforts to establish hospitals for the mentally ill, building of the U.S. Capitol, the Virginia Central Railroad and the University of Virginia. Many letters convey local news in Staunton and Augusta County, Va., such as the development of Alum Springs, the establishment of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind, smallpox cases and land sales and controversies in Virginia and Kentucky. Others refer to legal cases handled by Stuart, including suits involving the Bath Iron Works and Buffalo Forge, and the Wheeling Bridge. Several letters discuss family affairs including plans by a cousin to run a boarding house for young women in Athens, Greece. Only a few letters mention the Civil War and Reconstruction and include references to the military movements of Confederate general Robert S. Garnett. Topics in earlier Stuart and the related Baldwin family papers include ratification of the U.S. constitution, Jeffersonian party politics, political events during the administration of George Washington, Washington Academy, the University of Virginia and its honor system, Washington College, and William Wirt's biography of Patrick Henry. The papers also contain an architectural drawing of an unidentified house, an engraving of Alexander H.H. Stuart, insurance policies, stock certificates, indentures, wills, land plats, and speeches by Alexander H.H. Stuart. Military papers of Captain George M. Cochran, Jr., Quartermaster, 52nd Virginia Infantry, consist chiefly of requisitions and receipts. There are also two printed pamphlets, 1849, in French and German, on the potato blight.
