Papers of a rear admiral in the United States Navy, the bulk of which consists of the correspondence of Captain William Bolton Finch, including a number of letters from Commodore William Bainbridge, several of them in 1815 when preparations were underway for an Algerian campaign, correspondence with native rulers and American missionaries in the Hawaiian Islands at the time of Finch's official visit there in 1829 as commander of the "Vincennes," and his report of the expedition. Also present is Wilkes' correspondence, 1861-1880, containing a draft of his letter turning over to the government the Civil War captives James M. Mason and John Slidell, correspondence regarding his retirement, an account of his Antarctic Expedition in 1840, and a biographical sketch of Wilkes.
