Mary Lee Fitzhugh Custis (1788-1853) a descendant of the Randolphs of Virginia, was married to George Washington Parke Custis (1781-1857), wealthy grandson of Martha Dandridge Custis Washington (1731-1802), who inherited extensive estates from his father John Parke Custis, and from George Washington (1732-1799). He built Arlington House and lived the life of a gentleman farmer. The Custis' daughter, Mary Anne Randolph Custis ( -1873), married Robert E. Lee (1807-1870). G.W. Custis Lee was their son. During the period the letters were written, Lee was stationed in Washington (1836-1837) and after that at Old Point Comfort (Fort Monroe), with increasing assignments out west including the Mexican War (1845-1848). Daniel Parke Custis (1711-1757) was the first husband of Martha Washington and father of John Parke Custis.

James Murray Mason (1798-1871) was a lawyer and Virginia legislator, and a grandson of George Mason, planter, statesman, and political philosopher (1725-1792). He was married to Eliza Margaretta Chew (1798- ) daughter of Benjamin Chew, ( -1844) who inherited "Cliveden", estate of his father, also Benjamin Chew, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania supreme court (1722-1810).
