John Swank, a native of Augusta County, Va., settled near Singers Glen, Rockingham County, Va., where he lived until his death just before the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and is buried at St. John's [Lutheran Church, Rockingham County.].

Biographical note: Politician; John Buchanan Floyd was Governor of Virginia, 1859-1852, U.S. Secretary of War in Buchanan's cabinet, 1857-1860, resigned at the request of the President, and entered the Confederate Service as Brigadier of Volunteers.

John Buchanan Floyd was born 1 June 1806 in Montgomery County, Va. He graduated from South Carolina College. He married Sally Buchanan Preston and began the practice of law in Wytheville, Va. but soon went to Arkansas. Sickness killed many of his slaves and he returned to Virginia in bad health and without money. He practiced law in Abingdon, Va. and paid off his debts. Floyd served in the Virginia House of Delegates and as governor of Virginia from 1849 to 1852. He served as United States Secretary of War and as a general in the Confederate army. Floyd died 26 August 1863.
