Van Wyck Brooks was an author and educator, known for his study of, and influence on, American culture. After graduating from Harvard, he sought a literary career in New York and London, writing chiefly for magazines. While teaching at Stanford he developed his first books of criticism, leading up to his first significant success, America's Coming-of-Age. His subsequent attempts to analyze, and later direct, American culture were both erudite and popular, and he became one of the most popular authors of his time, an extraordinary achievement for a writer of scholarly non-fiction. He also wrote biography and history, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for The Flowering of New England.
