Stevenson was active in Illinois and national Democratic politics. He was a district attorney (1865-1869), twice elected to Congress (1875-1877, 1879-1881), a delegate to the Democratic national conventions of 1884-1892, and first assistant postmaster general (1885-1889). His wife, Letitia G., was one of the founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and active in many other women's social organizations. His daughters, Letitia E. & Julia, participated in the social life of the vice-presidential household. His grandson, Adlai E. Stevenson II, was governor of Illinois (1949-1953), twice the Democratic candidate for U.S. President (1952 & 1956), and U.S. ambassador to the U.N. (1961-1965). Another grandson, Adlai S. Hardin, was a noted sculptor.
