Springer, William M.
Variant namesBorn in Indiana in 1836, practiced law first in Lincoln, Ill. and then moved to Springfield in 1861 where he went into partnership with John McClernand and Robert B. Latham. Served as a Democrat in the Illinois Legislature 1871-1872 and the U.S. House of Representatives, 1875-1895. Died in 1903.

U.S. Representative (Republican) from Illinois' twenty-second district (1951-1972). Member of Committee on the District of Columbia (1963-1972); member of Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce (1957-1972), of which he was ranking Republican (1964-1972), and its Special Subcommittee on Investigations (Legislative Oversight). Supporter of Public Works flood control projects, particularly Oakley Dam and Reservoir Project. Vice-chairman of Republican Congressional Committee and chairman of its Finance Committee (1958-1972).
