Born London, 1759; educated Oxford; naturalized citizen of U.S., 1796; practiced law and medicine in Pennsylvania; state judge, 1804-1811; professor of chemistry at Dickinson College, 1811-1815; professor of applied chemistry at University of Pennsylvania, 1815-1819; president and professor of chemistry, mineralogy and political economy at South Carolina College, 1820-1834; died Columbia, S.C., 1839.
