Poet, novelist, journalist, biographer, and pro-German publicist; biographer of Edward M. House; in March, 1942 convicted of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act and sentenced to prison.
"George Sylvester Viereck," http://www.anb.org (accessed September 27, 2006). Biographical information derived from the collection.
German-American poet, writer, and propagandist George Sylvester Viereck was born December 31, 1884, in Munich, Germany.
Prior to World War I, Viereck enjoyed some literary fame as a poet. His German heritage became a focal point of his prolific and varied career as a poet, propagandist, interviewer, essayist, playwright, and novelist, and he publicized his pro-German sentiments in a variety of self-run periodicals during World War I and World War II. Viereck maintained that bias due to his political activities prevented publication and fair reception of his work.
After the war, Viereck continued to write: in addition to his journalistic activities for the Saturday Evening Post and his work for his own periodical, Viereck published a study of propaganda, Spreading Germs of Hate (1930) and The Strangest Friendship in History: Woodrow Wilson and Colonel House (1932). Viereck also became known for his interviews with famous contemporaries, many of whom he numbered among his personal friends, including Kaiser Wilhelm II, George Bernard Shaw, Sigmund Freud, and Albert Einstein.
World War II renewed Viereck’s propagandistic activities; he wrote and worked for the German-American Economic Bulletin and helped found Today’s Challenge in 1939. Viereck’s public defense of Nazism and many of its policies during this period led to his arrest in October 1941 for violation of the 1938 Foreign Agents Registration Act. In 1942, Viereck was convicted and sent to prison, only to be released a year later when the Supreme Court overturned the decision. Yet in 1943, Viereck was again convicted and imprisoned until 1947. His incarceration inspired many poems and a memoir, Men Into Beasts (1952).
Viereck maintained that bias due to his political activities prevented publication and fair reception of his work; however, many of his poems were printed in Samuel Roth’s American Aphrodite.
Viereck’s literary pursuits also included plays and novels. With novelist Paul Eldridge, Viereck penned a trilogy of novels based on the theme of the Wandering Jew: My First Two Thousand Years: The Autobiography of the Wandering Jew (1929); Salome, The Wandering Jewess: My First Two Thousand Years of Love (1930); and Invincible Adam (1932). Viereck’s other fiction includes The House of the Vampire (1907) and The Nude in the Mirror (1953). Viereck died March 18, 1962, in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

Title:
Ludwig Lewisohn papers, 1903-1980s (bulk 1940s).
Papers document mostly Lewisohn's friendship and early homosexual love affair with poet George Sylvester Viereck and Lewisohn's later marriage to Edna Manley. Correspondence (1903-1955) between Lewisohn and Viereck is mostly on literary matters; but early holograph poems by Lewisohn refer to their love affair. Other poems include printed and typescript copies and his English translations of some poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Most of the collection documents the relationship of Lewisohn and Edna Manley, with mostly photocopies of her diaries (ca. 1940-1942) which describe her relationship with Lewisohn, her perceptions of him, the custody battle for his son James, his memories of many people and parts of his life, exiled Jewish and other writers fleeing Europe, and other subjects. Present are photocopies of correspondence (1936-1940) regarding the financial arrangements of Lewisohn's divorce from his first wife Mary Childs Lewisohn (who published books under the pseudonym Bosworth Crocker.) Other literary manuscripts include poems by Lewisohn set to music by Thelma Spear and an unknown composer; and photocopies of an unpublished novel and play by Edna Manley, as well as clippings of her newspaper columns (1934-1936) for a Rochester, NY, newspaper. Lewisohn printed matter includes an inscribed offprint (1904) of his article on the poetry of George Sylvester Viereck, and brochures advertising his lecture tours and his biography of Goethe. Photographs of Ludwig, James, and Edna Manley Lewisohn and many of her friends and family, including two photographs (ca. 1940s) of Henry Miller and his family at Big Sur. Also included is an audiocassette of a lecture by Lewisohn and materials (1992) from a College of Charleston exhibit on Lewisohn.

Fiorello H. La Guardia papers, 1918-1945
Title:
Fiorello H. La Guardia papers 1918-1945
Fiorello H. La Guardia (1882-1947) began his political career as deputy attorney of the state of New York in 1915. He was a representative in the U.S. Congress from 1917 to 1932 except for service in World War I and a term as president of New York's Board of Aldermen from 1919 to 1921. La Guardia ran for mayor of New York City in 1933 and served in that office for twelve years. He became director of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation program in 1945 after leaving the mayor's office. Papers document La Guardia's career as a congressman, president of the Board of Aldermen and three-term mayor of New York. The two largest portions of the collection are the congressional and mayoral correspondence files. Congressional correspondence, ca. 1918-1933, includes letters received and carbons of responses written either by La Guardia or by his secretary on his behalf, clippings, greeting cards, printed House bills, invitations, photographs, memoranda, notes, press releases, printed matter, and telegrams. Letters from constituents concern topics such as employment and naturalization and letters from citizens around the country relate to La Guardia's stand on issues before Congress, including social issues and prohibition. Mayoral correspondence files, 1933-1945, consist largely of correspondence with members of the public who wrote requesting help with education, employment, immigration, prison terms, and other problems; suggesting appointments for various city offices; and offering ideas, opinions and appreciation. Very little appears to document the daily operations of city business. Also included is a small group of press releases; typescript and printed speeches, articles, and other writings; printed matter; flight logbook, 1917-1919, kept by La Guardia on the Italian front; scrapbooks of clippings; and miscellaneous papers on a variety of topics (of note among these are photographs, printed matter and correspondence.

Title:
Charles Nagel papers 1877-1940
The papers include correspondence, letterbooks, scrapbooks, writings, topical files, photographs, and clippings which document the career of Charles Nagel. The papers highlight Nagel's legal practice and detail his role as counsel to Adolphus Busch and the Anheuser-Busch breweries. Files relating to Nagel's cabinet term include discussions of patronage appointments and efforts to win support for President Taft's re-election through the foreign language press, and his concerns as secretary of commerce and labor, including the 1910 census, the abolition of pelagic sealing, and fair enforcement of immigration laws. The papers reveal Nagel's love for German culture and his attempts to understand the events preceding World Wars I and II. Nagel's activities on behalf of German-Austrian relief efforts and German ethnic and cultural organizations are documented as is his involvement in the United States Chamber of Commerce, the National Industrial Conference Board, and numerous St. Louis civic, educational, cultural, and charitable organizations. An addition to the papers includes correspondence from Nagel to his wife, Anne Shepley Nagel.

The papers consist of correspondence, research notes, memoranda, writings, speeches, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia of Edwin Borchard, professor of law at Yale University, specialist in international law, adviser to government and business, and controversial advocate of American neutrality in both world wars. The correspondence reflects both his political and legal interests. Most important among his correspondents is John Bassett Moore, with whom he exchanged over 2,000 letters between 1917 and 1947. Other political figures and organizations include the America First Committee, the American Civil Liberties Union, Charles Beard, William E. Borah, John H. Danaher, Hiram Johnson, James A. Shanley, and George Holden Tinkham. Extensive subject files in the papers relate to Borchard's work as a member of various international commissions as well as in United States law and politics. The files contain research notes, memoranda, minutes of meetings, and related correspondence. The section on his writings, which are preserved in both typescript draft and printed form, includes books, articles, speeches, pamphlets, book reviews, and a draft for an unpublished book on enemy property. Only a small part of the papers relate to Borchard's work as a professor of law at Yale University and there is no family correspondence.

Title:
Charles Nagel papers, 1877-1940 (inclusive).

Harris, Frank, 1855-1931. A second preface to "The life and confessions of Oscar Wilde" / by Frank Harris.
Title:
A second preface to "The life and confessions of Oscar Wilde" / by Frank Harris. [1925]
Author's typescript of the book printed in 1925. About half of the work is a lengthy letter from Lord Alfred Douglas to Frank Harris, dated 30 Apr. 1925, giving in detail the latter's financial and personal relations with Oscar Wilde. With a copy of the first edition (an inscribed presentation copy from Lord Alfred Douglas to George Sylvester Viereck), an A.L.S. from Douglas to Viereck (dated 31 March 1926), and a T.L.S. from Harris to Viereck (dated 1 Dec. 1925). The typescript has the notation "Sent to me by Frank Harris. George Sylvester Viereck," but this is in error, as an extant letter from Douglas to Viereck (23 Sept. 1925) informs the latter that a typescript was being sent to him by one Alfred Rose, from London, and this is confirmed by the enclosed letter of Harris. The copy of the first edition is inscribed "George Sylvester Viereck from Alfred Douglas. London. May, 1926." Both letters are apparently unpublished. Letters cataloged separately.

Schauffler, Robert Haven, 1879-1964. Correspondence, 1872-1964.
Title:
Correspondence, 1872-1964.
The collection consists primarily of incoming correspondence, including typed and holograph manuscripts, postcards, Christmas cards, photographs, newspaper clippings, autographs, and a calendar that span Schauffler's lifetime. The letters cover a wide range of topics, including poetry, music composition, public taste in music and literature, and publishing. Among the more significant pieces of correspondence are a series of letters from Grace Hazard Conkling, in which she discusses the character and literary theories of Amy Lowell, Germany and German music, the image of porpoises in her own verse, George Saintsbury's A History of English Prose Rhythm, and Beethoven; letters written by the poet Louise Imogen Guiney to Edward A. Church; German translations of Schauffler's poetry done by Heinrich Barban; a lively discussion of music in the letters of Elizabeth C. Moore; letters from James Oppenheim, comparing poetry to music, questioning proper contemporary poetic subjects, and examining the differences between poetry of the nineteenth century and the twentieth; and, finally, correspondence from George Sterling, in which he touches upon the death of Jack London, his own impending divorce, sobriety, and the beauty of Carmel, California. In addition there are a number of typed and holograph manuscripts of poems, including Katherine Lee Bates's "The Debt," Robert Graves's "Burrs & Brambles," Clement Allison's "The Matter with the Poets" and others, poems by Clark Ashton Smith and George Sterling, Louis Untermeyer's "Spratt vs. Spratt" with corrections in his own hand, Edmund Gosse's "The Fear of Death," poems by Jessie Kemp Hawkins, Richard Hovey's "Matthew Arnold," Robert Underwood Johnson's "October" and "Portae Musarum," poems by Theda Kenyon, George Cabot Lodge's "Life and Death," poems by Charles F. Lummis, James Oppenheim, Sir Charles G.D. Roberts, and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson, and Charles Hanson Towne's "Silence," among many others.

Edwin Montefiore Borchard papers, 1910-1950
Title:
Edwin Montefiore Borchard papers

Ekern, Herman Lewis, 1872-1954. Herman Lewis Ekern papers, 1872-1954.
Title:
Herman Lewis Ekern papers, 1872-1954.
Papers of Herman L. Ekern, a Wisconsin attorney, progressive Republican, and state official, relating to progressive politics and campaigns, insurance practices and legislation, the St. Lawrence Seaway, Great Lakes water diversion, the University of Wisconsin, and programs such as social security and unemployment compensation. Primarily correspondence, the collection also includes speeches and writings of Ekern on insurance or related topics; records of the Lutheran Brotherhood, a large fraternal life insurance company which he helped found; materials collected during his studies of war-risk insurance and of social security; legal files; papers from his own political campaigns and from the La Follette-Wheeler 1924 campaign; and copies of minutes and reports of the Wisconsin Unemployment Commission, 1931-1932. The correspondence reflects Ekern's personal, political, and business interests. Early correspondence concerns family affairs and the beginning of his law practice at Whitehall, Wis. (1894-1911). With his election to the Assembly in 1902, politics and legislation become prominent topics. Ekern authored railroad retirement and teachers' retirement acts and was actively interested in other legislation involving taxation, redistricting, the county court system, and establishment of the state life insurance code. Ekern served as state insurance commissioner, 1910-1915, and letters from this period concern insurance as well as his interest in other progressive legislation and in the national progressive campaign in 1912. His 1924 files as finance chairman of the La Follette-Wheeler presidential ticket are present as are the files of Will R. McCord, a professional fund-raiser employed to direct solicitation of funds in other states. In 1926 there are letters concerning Ekern's unsuccessful bid for the Wisconsin governorship. Ekern later was in private law practice in Chicago and Madison, was an unsuccessful Progressive candidate for United States senate in 1938, and served on the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, 1939-1943. Much of his correspondence relates to the regents, alumni activities, and University fund-raising projects. Many state and national figures are included among Ekern's correspondents: Jane Addams, Robert S. Allen, Newton D. Baker, Roger N. Baldwin, George E. Beedle, Edward A. Birge, John J. Blaine, William E. Borah, Charles E. Broughton, John R. Commons, Henry A. Cooper, Robert S. Cowie, Charles H. Crownhart, Andrew H. Dahl, Joseph E. Davies, John S. Donald, Matthew S. Dudgeon, F. Title:
Century Company records
The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.
