Born Sarah Margaret Fuller in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she was given a substantial early education by her father, Timothy Fuller, who died in 1835 due to cholera. She later had more formal schooling and became a teacher before, in 1839, she began overseeing her Conversations series: classes for women meant to compensate for their lack of access to higher education. She became the first editor of the transcendentalist journal The Dial in 1840, which was the year her writing career started to succeed, before joining the staff of the New York Tribune under Horace Greeley in 1844. By the time she was in her 30s, Fuller had earned a reputation as the best-read person in New England, male or female, and became the first woman allowed to use the library at Harvard College. Her seminal work, Woman in the Nineteenth Century, was published in 1845. A year later, she was sent to Europe for the Tribune as its first female correspondent. She soon became involved with the revolutions in Italy and allied herself with Giuseppe Mazzini. She had a relationship with Giovanni Ossoli, with whom she had a child. All three members of the family died in a shipwreck off Fire Island, New York, as they were traveling to the United States in 1850. Fuller's body was never recovered.
Fuller was an advocate of women's rights and, in particular, women's education and the right to employment. She revolted against Boston-Cambridge’s learned professions because she was barred from entering as a girl. Fuller, along with Coleridge, wanted to stay free of what she called the "strong mental oder" of female teachers. She also encouraged many other reforms in society, including prison reform and the emancipation of slaves in the United States. Many other advocates for women's rights and feminism, including Susan B. Anthony, cite Fuller as a source of inspiration. Many of her contemporaries, however, were not supportive, including her former friend Harriet Martineau. She said that Fuller was a talker rather than an activist. Shortly after Fuller's death, her importance faded; the editors who prepared her letters to be published, believing her fame would be short-lived, censored or altered much of her work before publication.

Wikipedia entry, "Margaret Fuller," viewed 7/23/21
Sarah Margaret Fuller Ossoli (May 23, 1810 – July 19, 1850) was an American journalist, editor, critic, translator, and women's rights advocate associated with the American transcendentalism movement. She was the first American female war correspondent, writing for Horace Greeley's New-York Tribune, and full-time book reviewer in journalism. The collection includes approximately 450 letters, most of them written by or to Frederick and Anna. Also included are three journals kept by Frederick while he traveled, May to October 1847, January 1849 to February 1850, and February to July 1850. All reflect his sightseeing activities, political interests, and conversations and acquaintances. Hawthorne family. Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
Title:
Hawthorne family papers, 1825-1929.
The papers afford glimpses into the social and private lives of some of the Hawthorne family. Like others of her time and circumstances, Sophia Hawthorne devoted generous amounts of time to correspondence and journal-keeping; her surviving papers provide a rich reflection of life in 19th-century Concord, in Cuba, and later in England and Europe during Hawthorne's tenure as Consul at Liverpool. Included are letters, verse, journals, and notes relating to the family and milieu of Nathaniel Hawthorne and of the men and women of the American literary renaissance and of the Transcendentalist movement. Virtually all of the letters of Rose Hawthorne Lathrop were written to Clifford Smyth, a literary editor and historian, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix, Rose's niece; Rose dearly loved Beatrix and her family. Sent from Rosary Hill Home between 1913 and 1926, the year Rose died, the letters illustrate some of the familial concerns of Rose, who was by then Mother Alphonsa: she was for example, worried about her brother, Julian, and she remained committed to preserving her parents' memory. Also included are circa 450 pages of holograph manuscripts which, though undated, can be placed as pre-1900. The manuscripts consist of complete drafts of short stories, verse, and substantial fragments of several novels. These manuscripts seem not to have been previously published. Also present are two other items of interest: a copybook dated 1858, when Rose was seven, with penmanship exercises and numerous poems, and a holograph journal from 1873, when she was 22 years old. Of Julian Hawthorne's letters, almost all were written to Julian's son-in-law, Clifford Smyth, and to Clifford's wife, Beatrix (Julian's daughter). Three items are childhood notes, written in pencil, two to Julian's aunt Elizabeth Palmer Peabody; the other to his maternal grandfather, Nathaniel Peabody. Also included are Hawthorne family memorabilia and photographs, and manuscript papers of actress Anna Cora Mowatt.

Title:
Papers, 1759-1992.
The collection includes correspondence, diaries, journals, articles, photographs, sermons, lectures, school exercises, legal documents, receipted bills, and ephemera. Nearly all of the collection originated in the nineteenth century. Among the journal holdings are those of Mary Ware Allen Johnson, kept while she was a student at the Greene Street School. Also of interest are the journals of her mother, chronicling the daily events at the Allen School in the 1820s and 1830s. Another item of interest is the scrapbook created by Sarah Alexander Lord Allen (1825-1904) after the death of her daughter Gertrude Everett Allen (1847-1865) in Charleston, S.C. In it Sarah copied Gertrude's letters to memorialize her effort to teach the freedmen. The recipient of the largest number of letters was Mary Ware Allen Johnson whose nearly two thousand letters were mostly from family members. Her sisters, Elizabeth and Lucy wrote four hundred of them. Their tone is affectionate and concerned. Their subjects include: the family; organizing family visits; the scarcity of good help; sickness; death; Northborough friends; the Unitarian churches in Northborough, Keene, and Troy, N.Y.; anti-slavery activities; the Civil War; sewing for the family and the ubiquitous fund-raising fairs; the weather; and the garden. Additionally many letters from Mary's Providence school friends and Keene neighbors are preserved. Marion May, forced to support herself, wrote of her often unhappy situations. In Cambridgeport, Mass., her life in the kitchen was an "underground purgatory" and in Keene Mrs. Abbott's son was "a disagreeable little monkey." Of unusual interest are the letters from Lucy Long (1817-1869), a beloved nurse who attended the family in their times of need. Some of the most literary letters are from Martha LeBaron Goddard (1829-1888) of Worcester. She critiques the books she has read, the lectures she has attended and the state of affairs in Worcester. She was a friend of Thoreau's friend, Theophilus Brown (1811-1879), and a great admirer and follower of Wendell Phillips (1811-1884). Under the pen name, "Mademoiselle", she wrote a series of letters for the Worcester Evening Transcript and later for the Worcester Daily Spy. The recipient of the second largest number of letters was Harriet Hall Johnson with nearly a thousand. Approximately two hundred of them were from her mother allowing the reader to be privy to both sides of the conversation. Occasionally her mother wrote with surprising frankness of such subjects as her relationship with her mother-in-law and her husband's courtship, but usually she wrote of people and events at home and practical matters to be settled with Harriet. More than one hundred and twenty five letters to Harriet were written by Martha Jane Loring Potter (1827-1887). Their acquaintance began when Martha was a patient of Dr. Johnson's, boarding with the family. As a child Harriet loved to visit the Loring family in Boston. After Martha's marriage to Captain George Allen Potter (1825-1889) and their subsequent move to Brooklyn, N.Y., Harriet's visits continued. The papers include: accounts of Martha's two trips to China with her husband on board "The Hotspur"; stories of her children and her family's activities; and comments on the fashions of the day. Family members, school friends and female contemporaries were among Harriet's correspondents. A problem that loomed large for some of them was the matter of earning a living. The usual choice was teaching but Gabriella ("Ella") Eddy, Fanny Eliot, and Ellen ("Nelly") Livingstone chose differently. Both Gabriella and Fanny were friends from New Bedford who studied art in New York City. Gabriella urged Harriet to practice painting, writing that "it is so good to have money that you earn yourself...I don't know how I would do without it now." Later Gabriella married photographer Thomas Edward Mulliken White and Fanny married the artist, R. Swain Gifford. Ellen Livingstone's story unfolds in nearly fifty letters to Harriet as well as in a number to Mary Johnson. Ellen had no family; in fact she did not even know the identity of her parents, but from Joseph Allen's account book we know that her expenses at the Allen School in 1857, were paid by a Dr. Frothingham. In 1859 she was in Keene at the Johnsons, recovering from lameness. She must have been an attractive person with a pleasing personality for people seemed happy to help her. Mary Johnson wrote to Harriet that "I think she is very interesting and I like very much to have her here." From Keene, Ellen went, with some trepidation, to work for a family with three children in Windsor Locks, Conn. On her return to Keene she earned money, when she could, by working for various families until going to Framingham, Mass., to attend normal school. During her stay in Framingham she may have met Will Kilbourne whom she married in April of 1862. After two children and a move to Lancaster, Mass., the marriage went sour. Will sued for divorce on the grounds of adultery but by then Ellen was supporting herself as an actress in New York City. In her letter of 5 October 1869 to Harriet, she wrote that Edwin Booth was paying her a salary of fifteen dollars a week to act in Miss Bateman's "Leah." The last reference to Ellen in the collection is in the letter of 20 February 1876 to Mary Johnson from her sister Elizabeth. Elizabeth had been visiting in New York City where she had heard that Ellen's husband had died. The Allen-Johnson family papers illuminate life in 19th century New England-in particular that of a Congregationalist/Unitarian family of good education, excellent character, and moderate means. That the family took pride in its achievements can be surmised from the fact that the collection exists. Happily, for their preservation, the papers remained together for many years in the Parsonage where they had been collected. The Parsonage (1817- ) remained in the possession of the Allen family until the 1990s. It still sits, on much diminished acreage, in Northborough, across from the church, on present day Church Street. Joseph Allen's pear orchard, his beloved gardens, and most of the outbuildings are gone. In its nearly two hundred years it has been a boarding house and a school, as well as the Allen family home. The house remains a monument to the many hundreds who have found shelter there as well as to the original occupants who loved it so well. In a salute to its past Harriet Johnson wrote that: "the spirit of real fun and jollity passed with the youth and early age of my dear uncles and aunts and with all the youth that has come to it this old house has never seen such jolly times they sang, they joked, they played pranks, told stories, sang rounds and tried to sing glees in which they invariably broke down and ended in peals of laughter."

Papers of Olympia Brown, ca.1849-1963
This collection contains over 120 handwritten sermons and notes for sermons, handwritten school and college essays, other writings correspondence (mostly letters to Brown), speeches, church and convention programs, clippings, five issues of Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly, handbills, photographs and memorabilia. The papers provide information about Brown's family, her formal education and her outlook on religion, women in the ministry and woman's rights. There is considerable information about the woman's suffrage movement, particularly the Kansas campaign of 1867, the Federal Suffrage Association, and the trials of Brown and Susan B. Anthony. There is little information about Brown's ministerial career after she resigned from her Racine parish, and there are only nine letters written by her. Series I, Personal and Biographical, 1857-1963 (#1-13), is grouped in three sections: biographical, education and professional. Series II, Writings, 1849-1920, n.d. (#14-126), is arranged chronologically, with dated items followed by the undated items. The latter are divided into three sections: college writings, writings on woman's rights, and sermons. All items are handwritten unless otherwise noted. Series III, Correspondence, 1855-1920 (#127-142), is grouped in three sections: letters to Brown; letters by Brown; and other to other. Each section is arranged chronologically. See Index of correspondents. Series IV, Suffrage and Woman's Rights, 1855?-1921 (#143-158, 161+), is arranged by organization, event, or type of record and then chronologically. Woman's rights material is located throughout the collection; see also Series I, #6, 9, 10, 12 and 13; Series II, especially #25, 28-29, 32-36, 46-50; and Series III. This collection does not represent the total surviving Brown papers. Other collections are listed in Women's History Sources (New York and London, 1979).

The collection consists chiefly of correspondence. Included are two business letters written by Miss Sanborn from her farm, Breezy Meadows, in Metcalf, Mass. to Mr. Borlin (?) (1892 September 10) and Mr. Coombes (1892 October 19) requesting the return of a manuscript and negotiating the payment for a book. Also included are letters (1893-1901) to Charles Follen Adams extending him invitations and a book, and thanking him for presents. A letter from George H. Calvert, Newport, R.I. (1883 February 21) responds to Sanborn's request for his personal reminiscences of Margaret Fuller. He mentions his first meeting with her in 1837 when Fuller politely disagreed with William Ellery Channing over the merits of Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd's poem "Ion," a visit in 1838 that included Ralph Waldo Emerson, and a later visit at the Tribune offices with Horace Greeley. The collection also contains an advertising flier (4 p., n.d.) for a series of lectures entitled "Miss Kate A. Sanborn's Lectures on Literature." The flier lists fifteen lecture subjects, including Spinster Authors of England, Bachelor Authors, Pets of Noted Persons, and Vanity and Insanity: the Shadows of Genius, and quotes from favorable reviews.

Anthony, Alice Stone Blackwell, Carrie Chapman Catt, Maria Weston Chapman, Caroline Dall, Mary Abigail Dodge, Abigail Scott Duniway, Margaret Fuller, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Angelina and Sarah Grimké, Ida Husted Harper, Julia Ward Howe, Mary Putnam Jacobi, Mary Livermore, Lucretia Mott, Sylvia Pankhurst, Alice Paul, Jannette Rankin, Anna Howard Shaw, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone and Frances Willard. The collection also contains Margaret Fuller's personal copy of Goethe's Werke, an inscribed edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Yellow Wall Paper, and several letters by suffrage leaders Susan B. Anthony, Carrie Chapman Catt, Margaret Fuller, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Julia Ward Howe, Lucretia Mott, Alice Paul, Anna Howard Shaw, and Lucy Stone. While the majority of the collection documents the work of pro-suffrage forces, also present are a number of publications arguing against universal suffrage, such as leaflets distributed by the Woman's Anti-Suffrage Society, and the New York State Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage. The collection also contains issues of scarce women's magazines that were published in support of the suffrage movement, such as The Revolution, The Suffragist, The Woman Citizen, and Woodhull and Clafin's Weekly.
