Wyndham Lewis was an artist, novelist, and critic, who was born in Canada but lived for many years in England. He was a leader of the Vorticist movement.
English author and painter.
Author and artist Wyndham Lewis was born on board ship off the coast of Canada. He was raised in England, educated at Rugby and the Slade School of Art, travelled in Europe, and became well known as an artist and illustrator, a leader in the abstract vorticist movement. His work on the short-lived periodical Blast was influential; after fighting in World War I, Lewis began writing in earnest, producing novels, essays, and criticism. His complex, combative nature alienated many acquaintances, and his infamous novel The Apes of God harshly lampooned most of his literary friends. Throughout the 1930s, he wrote in praise of Hitler and had openly Fascist leanings, recanting after the invasion of Poland.
(Percy) Wyndham Lewis was an artist, writer, and critic. He was born on a yacht in the Bay of Fundy, Nova Scotia. He studied at the Slade School of Art, London. With Ezra Pound, Lewis founded Blast (1914-15), the magazine of Vorticism. His writings include the novel The Apes of God (1930), and The Human Age (1955-6); literary criticism including Men Without Art (1934), and autobiographical books, such as Blasting and Bombardiering (1937). His produced works include abstract art, a series of war pictures, and portraits.
Artist, novelist, and critic, who was born in Canada but lived for many years in England; a leader of the Vorticist movement.

Friendly letters, saying he has left banking and gone into publishing, does not collect rare books, recommending Wyndham Lewis (not D.B. Wyndham Lewis) and George Moore (item 1); giving news of the Criterion ("Yes, it still exists, in spite of various vicissitudes; and the Pope, Ramsay Mac, and Herb Hoover are said to tear it open with trembling fingers once every three months"), wondering if Morris is "going to succeed Pierpont Morgan or land in jail", and enclosing some vulgar verse (item 2); saying he awaits "official notification" from Harvard and looking forward to visiting Morris in Easthampton ("I am particularly anxious to keep out of the way of publishers, agents, editors, authors and poetesses, the last of whom I understand abound in New York"), referring to Prohibition (item 3); discussing his work at Harvard (item 4); discussing his schedule ("what can you do in New York with just that about of time to spare [two hours] except eat oysters and wash them down with Irish whisky which I did?") (item 5); and sending greetings (item 6).

Morrell, Ottoline Violet Anne Cavendish-Bentinck, Lady, 1873-1938. Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Title:
Ottoline Morrell Collection, 1882-1946 (bulk 1882-1938).
Correspondence makes up the bulk of the Ottoline Morrell Collection, supplemented by a few holograph and typescript manuscripts by Morrell and other authors. Among the letters in this collection are many photographs and sketches provided by the authors to Morrell. The small Works Series contains holograph drafts of two articles by Morrell, the first a description of some of her memories of D. H. Lawrence and the other a review of an early critical work on Lawrence's writing. Also included are notes she took on a trip to Ireland in 1919. The Correspondence Series contains outgoing (1911-1938) and incoming correspondence (1894-1938). Outgoing correspondence is made up of holograph letters which Morrell wrote to her friends and acquaintances. There are a few letters written for fund-raising and other business purposes, but the majority are personal letters. Incoming correspondence forms the bulk of this collection with well over 2,500 letters, mostly personal, written to Morrell on various topics of art, politics, World War I, literature, and the gossip for which Bloomsbury was famous. Within this series 1,782 letters from Bertrand Russell thoroughly cover their lengthy relationship. Other accumulations of letters are present from Clive and Vanessa Bell, Augustine Birrell, Elizabeth Bowen, Dorothy Brett, Dora Carrington, John Cramb, T. S. Eliot, Mark Gertler, Frances Hackett, Augustus John, Henry Lamb, Frank Prewett, Siegfried Sassoon, Lytton Strachey, and many others. The Miscellaneous Series is divided between works, correspondence, and materials by Bertrand Russell. The works include poems and short essays by other authors, including a collection of poems by Frank Prewett. The correspondence portion contains letters between Morrell's friends and quite a few letters to Philip Morrell. Of particular note is the correspondence between Philip Morrell and Frieda Lawrence regarding the legal issues of D. H. Lawrence's estate. The final section contains works by Bertrand Russell and a number of letters from him to other people, including a group of letters to his brother written from prison.

John Quinn papers, 1901-1926
Title:
John Quinn papers 1901-1926
John Quinn (1870-1924) was a corporation lawyer in New York City who amassed an important private collection of paintings, drawings and sculpture as well as books and manuscripts of contemporary authors. In addition to promoting modern and avant-garde art in all forms, he particularly encouraged the work of members of the Irish Literary Revival, the artists of the Paris School, and English and American writers of his time. In 1923 he sold his manuscript and library holdings to subsidize his art collection. Collection consists mainly of correspondence, with writings, printed matter and photographs that document Quinn's artistic and political interests. Correspondence, 1901-1924, is with artists, art dealers, critics, poets, playwrights, booksellers, publishers, and members of his family. Files of letters and letterbooks contain correspondence relating to his interest in the artistic and literary scene in America and abroad, events in Ireland especially during the Home Rule movement, his purchase of paintings, sculpture, first editions and manuscripts of contemporary literature, and the sale of his library and manuscript collection. Also includes typescripts of literary works, typescript of the catalog of Quinn's art collection, ledgers, sales and exhibition catalogs, periodicals, and photographs of Quinn with individual artists and group portraits.

Correspondence, offprints, clippings, typescripts, galley proofs, photographs, tearsheets, drawings, computer printouts and program sheets, holograph notes and drafts, notebooks, and academic papers document Hugh Kenner's career as critic, scholar, and educator. Subject Files is the largest of the three series, constituting one half of the Kenner papers. It includes a large number of papers and articles by colleagues of Kenner and topical files on individuals and subjects related to Kenner's academic interests. Some of the largest files document Samuel Beckett, T.S. Eliot, Buckminster Fuller, James Joyce, and Ezra Pound. The Works series contains various drafts, contracts, and correspondence for books, articles, lectures, reviews, and introductions by Kenner. John Lane Company. Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
Title:
Records of the John Lane Company, 1856-1933 (bulk, 1894-1930).
The records of the John Lane Company comprise correspondence, readers' reports, manuscripts and proof copies, financial records, documents, and autobiographical materials. Series I of the John Lane Company Records comprises the correspondence and other records reflecting the activities of this firm, its officers and authors from 1856 to 1933, with the majority dating from 1894 to 1930. The correspondence is largely business-related, although the personal correspondence of John Lane is intermixed. Correspondents include Francis P. Barnard, Horace Bleackley, John Buchan, Walter Crane, Arthur Dasent, Richard and Edward Garnett, Kenneth Grahame, Constance Hill, Stephen Leacock, Vernon Lee, Richard Le Gallienne, William J. Locke, Alice and Wilfrid Meynell, Stephen Phillips, Margaret W. Roberts, Clement K. Shorter, Edward P. Stebbing, A. Francis Steuart, Frank Swettenham, Silvanus P. Thompson, Katrina Trask, William Watson, Theodore Watts-Dunton, and M. P. Willcocks. In addition to the large body of incoming correspondence, there is in the series a quantity of intramural correspondence by members of the firm covering the years 1898 to 1920. A small group of financial records and miscellaneous materials complete the series. The smaller Series II "Creative Work" embraces in the main a large number of readers' reports prepared for the firm between 1894 and 1930. There are no reports for the years 1909 to 1914 nor for 1917 to 1920, but otherwise the coverage appears comprehensive. Also present in this subseries is a small number of manuscripts by Lascelles Abercrombie, William Watson and others. Series III contains a small amount of material relating to John Lane the man. A short autobiographical sketch and notes which appear to be the beginning of a projected history of British art in India are contained in the series, along with fragments relating to Lane. As noted above, a significant amount of his personal correspondence is scattered through Series I.
