The Thomas Gage papers consist of the military and governmental correspondence and headquarter papers of General Thomas Gage, officer in the British Army in America (1754-1763) and commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America between 1763 and 1775. The papers include incoming correspondence and retained copies of letters written by Gage, together with a large quantity of documents related to military administration and manuscript maps of North America. The collection is particularly strong in documenting British administration of North America after the French and Indian War, interactions with Native Americans, and the years preceding the American Revolution. The first volume includes extracts from the journals of Conrad Weiser and Christian Frederick Post (1757), Charles Thomson's "An Enquiry into the causes of the alienation of the Delaware and Shawanese Indians from the British interest" (1759), and a printed version of Judge Bradford's "Statement of facts and observations respecting the penal laws" (1792). The second volume contains selected letters and documents in the Pennsylvania state records on Indian relations, including transcriptions of several treaties between the Province of Pennsylvania and the Delawares and other Indians (1755-1758); the French and Indian War; and Braddock's campaign. Some manuscripts are written by Deborah Norris Logan and Charles Thomson.

The papers from Forbes's campaign against the French at Ft. Duquesne contain correspondence, reports about Indian allies and the colonial governments, military returns and instructions, intelligence reports and some financial papers. They concern strategy, supply, the advance across Pennsylvania, colonial cooperation, provisioning of the troops, Indian negotiations and relations with British and colonial officers. Material is present from other British campaigns in the French and Indian war, particularly the assault at Ft. Ticonderoga, the massacre at Ft. William Henry, the siege of Louisburg, and Braddock's defeat which is described in the letterbook of Sir John St.Clair, the highest ranking officer to survive.

Other documents recount colonial military strategy during the French and Indian War and several laws pertaining to the collection of naval duties. Also contains a catalog of 168 North American trees (n.d.). No apparent arrangement. Correspondents include governors, Convention of Maryland, Council of Safety, King George II, Lord Baltimore, and civil and military officials.

The collection contains the letterpress copybook of Edmund Jenings, kept in London and Richmond, England, concerning Horatio Sharpe, Richard Lee, Edward Braddock's campaign in 1755, horse racing in Virginia, Frederick Lord Baltimore, John Randolph, the Ohio Company, Peyton Randolph, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, William Byrd III, and William Pitt. Other subjects include the Board of Trade of Great Britain, Jewish immigration to Great Britain, Maryland Land Office, slaves, paper currency in Virginia and Maryland, pistole fee, plantations in Virginia and Maryland, salt, Seven Years' War, tobacco, and the Virginia and Maryland boundary. Also discussed are copper mines, the East India company, pamphlets of Edmund Jenings (1731-1819) and Dr. John Mitchell, the Stamp Act of 1765, taxation, the Townshend Acts of 1767, and the College of William and Mary. There are also letters (1789-1818) written to Edmund Jenings (1731-1819) concerning land in Anne Arundel County, Md.; a letter (1783) concerning American property rights in England; a copy of a 1795 act of the Maryland General Assembly concerning land of Edmund Jenings in Anne Arundel County, Md.; the wills (1737) of John Clayton (1665-1737) and (1774) of John Clayton (1694-1773); affidavits (1790) concerning John Clayton (1694- 1773) and William Clayton. Also includes Jenings family genealogical notes and letters.

The second volume contains selected letters and documents in the Pennsylvania state records on Indian relations, French and Indian War, and Braddock's campaign. Some manuscripts are written by Deborah Norris Logan and Charles Thomson.

Refers to earlier letters to brother William, containing Horatio's account of the problem. Advises Horatio to burn the present correspondence as a safeguard. Notes that the letter is borne by Francis Fauquier, "a gentleman possess'd of many amiable qualities" to whose family Sharpe is indebted.
