Epithet: writer and critic
John Lehmann was an English author, poet, journalist, editor, and publisher. He was founder and editor (1936-1950) of NEW WRITING, manager (1938-1946) of Hogarth Press, founder and director (1946-1952) of John Lehmann, Ltd. (publishers), founding editor (1953-1961) of LONDON MAGAZINE, and visiting professor at various universities. He also wrote and edited numerous works, including FORTY POEMS (1942), THE AGE OF THE DRAGON: POEMS, 1930-1951, EDITH SITWELL (1952), I AM MY BROTHER (1960), DEMETRIOS CAPETANAKIS, A GREEK POET IN ENGLAND (1947), and SHELLEY IN ITALY: AN ANTHOLOGY (1947).
(Rudolph) John Frederick Lehmann, was born on June 2, 1907 at Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, England. Lehmann was educated at Eton, and studied history and modern languages at Trinity College, Cambridge. There his close friendship with Julian Bell, nephew of Virginia Woolf, plunged him into the Bloomsbury circle. By 1931 he was working at the Hogarth Press, owned by Woolf and her husband, Leonard. Hogarth Press published his first volume of poems, A Garden Revisited (1931). He briefly left publishing and lived for a time in Austria and the U.S.S.R. as a poet and a journalist prior to the start of World War Two.
His first periodical, New Writing, appeared in 1935 and by 1940 the series reached a broad audience both in Britain and on the frontlines of World War Two. Formatted to fit into the side pockets of combat trousers, it averaged monthly sales of up to 75,000.
Lehmann returned to Hogarth Press in 1938 as a partner and general manager and worked as editor of several anthologies showcasing the works of promising new writers. In 1946 Lehmann established his own publishing company, John Lehmann Limited. After the demise of Lehmann Ltd., he founded and edited London Magazine . He relinquished control over the periodical in 1961 and subsequently wrote several biographies, including Rupert Brooke: His Life and His Legend and Thrown to the Woolfs: Leonard and Virginia Woolf and the Hogarth Press, and three autobiographies which were collected, revised, and condensed into the book In My Own Time: Memoirs of a Literary Life . Lehmann also wrote several volumes of poetry, including A Garden Revisited and Other Poems and Collected Poems, 1930-1963, and the novels Evil Was Abroad and In a Purely Pagan Sense .
He frequently lectured in the US in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After a long illness and unsuccessful hip operations severely limited his mobility, John Lehmann died on April 7, 1987. The New York Times Book Review, called Lehmann "the greatest British literary editor of his time. . . . There is scarcely a writer [of his generation] in Britain . . . who hasn't at one time or other been grateful for his passionate scrutiny."

Barker, George, 1913-1991. George Barker collection, 1930-1966.
Title:
George Barker collection, 1930-1966.
This collection includes letters, drafts of poems, plays, novels, reviews and lectures, as well as some of Barker's notebooks and a sketch book of drawings. The correspondence largely consists of literary correspondence to Barker covering the years 1933 through 1964. Of particular interest is correspondence from T.S. Eliot, Henry W. Treece, Edwin Muir, John Heath-Stubbs, William Empson, John Betjeman, William Butler Yeats and Stephen Spender. A variety of editors are also represented in the letters, including Julian Symons, Geoffrey Grigson, D. (Derek) S. Savage, John Ackerley, Jack Lindsay, John Lehmann, and Oscar Williams. The collection of poetry manuscripts includes about 50 different individual poems and books in various forms. The proof and galley pages, as well as the published books (see standing volumes), often have Barker's notes, corrections and revisions, giving readers a sense of the poet's composing process, and his need to revise works even after they had been published. Together with his notebooks, which also contain drafts of poems, the poetry manuscripts provide a fine record of the development of many poems. There are a number of unpublished poems in this collection also.

Abse, Dannie. Nimbus magazine archive, 1945-1962.
Title:
Nimbus magazine archive, 1945-1962.
The Nimbus Archive, 1945-1962, consists primarily of editorial files which include manuscripts, paste-ups, galleys, page proofs, designs, photographs, and various materials collected for publication, plus related correspondence, legal documents, and publicity. All issues of Nimbus, except the material for the last issue (Vol. IV, no. 2), are represented in the Editorial Files, 1951-1957. Nimbus published a diverse group of authors representing various literary schools, including such writers as Dannie Abse, W.H. Auden, George Barker, Bertolt Brecht, Jean Cocteau, Mircea Eliade, T.S. Eliot, Jean Genet, Michael Hastings, John Heath-Stubbs, C.G. Jung, Patrick Kavanagh, Laurie Lee, George Macbeth, Colin MacInnes, Pablo Neruda, Stevie Smith, Alexander Trocchi, Richard Wilbur, and Noel Woodin. Also found here are several manuscripts not published by Nimbus, including works by John Health-Stubbs, Alexander Trocchi, David Wright, a radio play, "Too Tired for Words," by Stevie Smith, and others. The Business Files, 1945-1962, include correspondence, legal papers, and publicity. The outgoing and incoming correspondence primarily addresses editorial and financial concerns during David Wright's co-editorship. The letters of Christopher Logue and Noel Woodin, however, are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Dannie Abse, W.H. Auden, Djuna Barnes, Edward Dahlberg, C. Day Lewis, J.P. Donleavy, T.S. Eliot, William Empson, Michael Hamburger, John Heath-Stubbs, Patrick Kavanagh, Christopher Logue, Hugh MacDiarmid, W. Somerset Maugham, Vernon Scannell, Dame Edith Sitwell, Alexander Trocchi, and Evelyn Waugh.

Collection, 1923-1992.
Comprises correspondence (primarily incoming) and several works by King from 1939-92. Correspondence content varies from discussions about his works, reviews, publishing, PEN, and politics, to personal information. Also in the correspondence series are letters from King to Alexander Walton (1956-63), discussing King's experiences and impressions of Greece and Japan during his employment with the British Council. Letters from King to his mother date from 1931 to 1992, but the bulk are from 1957-63, and cover a variety of topics. Some of his novels in this collection are The Custom House (1961), The Last of the Pleasure Gardens (1965), The Waves behind the Boat (1967), A Domestic Animal (1970), and The Needle (1975).

Forster, E. M. (Edward Morgan), 1879-1970. E. M. Forster Collection, 1908-1971.
Title:
E. M. Forster Collection, 1908-1971.
The Works Series contains several holograph drafts of essays on topics ranging from liberty to tolerance, and three holograph manuscripts of A Passage to India, two of which are fairly complete and are extensively edited by the author, while the third is composed primarily of earlier draft material and represents about one-third of the novel's length. Also contained in the collection is a copy of The Longest Journey on microfilm. The Correspondence Series is particularly interesting as it is almost exclusively composed of personal letters from Forster to various friends and acquaintances. The series is organized into two sections, Outgoing Correspondence, 1908-1967, and Third-party Correspondence, 1925-1937. Outgoing correspondence comprises over 800 letters from Forster to Joe Ackerley, Morgan's friend and confidante, and over 200 letters to Malcolm Darling, another close friend. Also represented among the recipients of letters are Dora Carrington, Francis King, John Lehmann, Colin Spencer, and others. The Third-party section contains a scant handful of personal letters between people other than Forster. The Works by Other Authors Series contains a small number of writings by other people. Included is a list of the Cambridge University, King's College Library's collection of Forster's papers, a biographical pamphlet about Forster written by Rex Warner, and the Memorandum of Agreement between Albatross Verlag and Forster for publication of A Passage to India. Galley proofs for W. Heffer & Sons Ltd.'s Heffer Catalogue Seven, prepared for the sale of Forster's collection of books after his death, are also included.

Pudney, John, 1909-1977. Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
Title:
Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976).
The John Pudney Papers, 1850-1977 (bulk 1926-1976), include drafts, notes, printer's copies, galleys, research material, notebooks, diaries, and correspondence. Manuscripts for Pudney's poetry collections and chapbooks include Collected Poems, 1957, and Selected Poems, 1967-1973, as well as proofs for Beyond this Disregard (1943), South of Forty (1943), Spandrels: Poems and Ballads (1969), and Living in a One-Sided House (1976). Manuscripts for early and/or unpublished later poems, 1926-1968, are also present. Some materials such as those for Ten Summers: Poems, 1933-1943 include only notes and correspondence. Manuscripts of Pudney's fiction include The Accomplice (1950), Shuffley Wanderers: An Entertainment (1948), and 'Sleadley' (nd). Materials for such works as The Net (1952), Trespass in the Sun (1957), and Home and Away: An Autobiographical Gambit (1960), include only critical notes and correspondence. Nonfiction materials include the proposal and correspondence for The Thomas Cook Story (1953). These materials, which concern the British temperance movement, consist primarily of the mid-19th century letters and ephemera of Thomas Cook, George Cruikshank, and Emily Ellis. Also present are the manuscript for Lewis Carroll and His World (1976), a working notebook, 1947 on the history of the British Air Force, and numerous materials for the revised edition of The Smallest Room (1954, 1959), a humorous history of sanitation and water closets. The Correspondence series, 1937-1962, primarily concerns the revision of The Smallest Room. Other correspondence also describes the nature of Pudney's other literary endeavors and editorial duties, while letters from George Barker and H.E. Bates are of a more personal nature. Other significant correspondents include Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold, John Betjeman, Benjamin Britten, Jocelyn Brooke, Sir Winston Churchill, Cynthia Coville (Secretary to Queen Mary), Oliver Dawney (Secretary to H.M. Queen Elizabeth), C. Day Lewis, T.S. Eliot, John Lehmann, Compton Mackenzie, Wolf Mankowitz, Lady Ottoline Morrell, Laurence Olivier, J.B. Priestly, Frederic Prokosch, Herbert Edward Read, Michael Redgrave, Vita Sackville-West, Edith Sitwell, Stephen Spender, Henry Treece, and Evelyn Waugh.

Title:
United States Sanitary Commission records. Army and Navy Claim Agency archives 1861-1870
The United States Sanitary Commission established the Army and Navy Claim Agency (ANCA) in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 1864 to serve as the USSC’s central office to assist Union soldiers, sailors, and their families in prosecuting claims on the federal government for pensions, back pay, bounty, commutation of rations, prize money, and other benefits, without cost. The Army and Navy Claim Agency Archives comprise the records of the Army and Navy Claim Agency; the records of the Pension Agency, its predecessor organization; the registers and cash books of its subsidiary local agencies; and the records of two quasi-independent USSC claim agencies whose origins predate the establishment of the Army and Navy Claim Agency: the Protective War Claim Association of the State of New York, located in New York City, and the Protective War Claim and Pension Agency, located in Philadelphia.
