He briefly mentions hearing a sermon by Bishop Meade, comments on poor teaching by Dr. B[laettermann] and asks to be remembered to all at home, including servants.

Title: Diary of Louisa H.A. Minor [manuscript], 1855-1866.

The diary contains a weekly account of the activities of Minor, her friends and family including church services attended, with the text for each sermon, visits and visitors, family and neighborhood news, weather and social events. She quotes poetry and occasionally composes her own, and there is also a lengthy list of her reading. Topics include: trips to the Richmond state fair in 1857 and 1860; activities at the University of Virginia, particularly celebrations of the Jefferson and Washington Societies; and, a lecture by Edward Everett on "The character of Washington." Of interest are mentions of freed slaves emigrating to Liberia and accounts of deaths and hardships there'; a note on the funeral of artist John Toole; and, an account of a young relative's successful efforts to go as a missionary to Liberia with Bishop John S. Payne. Most Civil War news is indirect but she does describe cooking for Ewell's troops when they came through the county and entertaining the general in her parlor. She also mentions a Christmas dinner given to soldier patients at the Delevan Hospital, Custer's diversionary raid on Rio Hill, February 1864, Federal troops passing through Albemarle County in March 1865, and the brief occupation of her home, an event that forced several family members to hide out in the woods. She also describes the difficulties of the first year of Reconstruction and expresses her bewilderment over the insubordination and disloyalty of former slaves. With the diary is a bequest 1871 April 23, from Mary W. Anderson, her foster mother.

Diary of Richard Henry Baker discusses his life as a University of Virginia student. He describes his fellow students as "wild heedless young men and mentions election as president of the Jefferson Society, Professor William Holmes McGuffey, a funeral service for "poor Haile who was shot.... " He also mentions a cholera epidemic in Norfolk in 1849, his future wife, and church sermons including ones by Richard K. Meade and U. Va. chaplain William H. Ruffner. In addition he frequently includes poetry, rules of conduct and Sabbath reflections. After leaving the University he records his marriage, confirmation and births of three children. Also included are two commissions, 1851 and 1852, in the Virginia Militia signed by Joseph Johnson and John B. Floyd, and a commission, 1854, making Baker a notary public signed Joseph Johnson and George W. Munford.

The collection consists of three letters to Dr. Francis T. Stribling, 1851-1856, and a deposition, 1836, pertaining to mentally ill patients at the Western Lunatic Asylum in Staunton, Va. The 1836 May 27 deposition of 11 year old Phebe Alexander of Rockbridge County, and her uncle James Alexander, concerns the conduct of her father William H. Alexander, whose release from the Asylum was being considered. The deposition mentions Alexander's physical abuse of his wife and sister and religious excesses at a prayer meeting conducted by him. In a letter, 1851 April 25, Thomas D. Smith, Spotsylvania, writes regarding the "present condition of my afflicted companion," his inability to get her to comply with Stribling's prescription, her horror of returning to Staunton, whether to use coercion, and his lack of funds. In a letter,1852 March 6, N. Burwell, Jr., writes from the Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., concerning his current employment as a travelling salesman of religious books, and mentions Clement Moore Butler, alfred Lee and William Meade. In a letter, 1856 September 18, R.G. Dunn, Graysville, sends funds for the care of a Daniel Eppes, and enquires after his state of mind.

Names prominent in the proceedings include William Leigh and Henry St. George Tucker, executors of the 1832 will; John Coalter, "next friend" of John Coalter Bryan, residuary legatee of the 1832 will; John Randolph Bryan, plaintiff; John Marshall, witness; and William Meade, defendant and trustee for the slaves under the 1821 will.

In a letter, 1832 May 20, Nelly Custis Lewis worries about the effect of the Louisia climate, describes the natural history collection of "Lolen" and his treatment for a [broken?] ankle, sends news of activities and health of family and friends, asks for some pressed wildflowers as souvenirs, comments on a new preacher and an ordination at which Bishop Meade was present, and closes with regards from all including servants. In a letter April 17, n.y., Lorenzo sends advice on child rearing, discusses how hard her husband is working for General Gaines and comments on the latest fashions.

The collection consists of Upfold's colorful private correspondence with Maryland Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham, and letters of others about him. Subjects include the New York Protestant Episcopal Press, the New York Protestant Episcopal Tract Society, affairs of St. Luke's Church, New York City, and the Sunday School Union. More substantial materials concern Upfold's rectorship of Trinity Church, Pittsburgh, 1831; his travels in the middle west and description of church affairs there, 1840, including support for Bishop Jackson Kemper; his election as Bishop of Indiana and opposition thereto; troubles with Bishop Philander Chase; views concerning the trial of Bishop Benjamin T. Onderdonk and belief in his innocence; affairs of the Diocese of Indiana; descriptions of episcopal visitations; and many clergy matters, including references to John Martin, George Lamb Roberts, Ashbel Steele, and Horace Stringfellow, Jr. Upfold writes of wanting no "ultraism" among his clergy and deplores romanizing. He urges moderation and avoidance of controversy, but shows spirit in party strife. Much concerns Upfold's relations with other bishops and vigorous opinions about them, especially George W. Doane, William Meade, Levi S. Ives, Charles P. McIlvaine, Henry J. Whitehouse, and Joseph C. Talbot. He describes his tastes in architecture and projects for building churches. Collection contains frequent references to affairs of the General Theological Seminary, New York City, and Nashotah House, Wisconsin. Four letters of 1861 concern the Civil War, the state of the nation, and problems of the Episcopal Church. Among other points are condemnation of Bishop Leonidas Polk's military service for the Confederacy; fast days in Indiana; prayers to be used there; praise for Bishop Whittingham's Unionist stand in Maryland; funding of missionaries for Alabama; the need for moderation in dealing with the South; and hope for reunion of the Episcopal Churches in North and South after the war. Also includes references to family affairs and the bishop's declining years.

The papers of the Carter and Wellford families contain deeds, patents, stocks and bonds, wills maps, surveys, and indentures as well as correspondence. The early correspondence of Landon Carter (1710-1778) deals with tobacco production and sale, land purchases, and management of his plantation. Family and neighborhood news is frequently conveyed. Later correspondence contains many references to political troubles with England, action taken in Virginia, and events in the first years of the Revolution such as the Stamp Act, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Virginia Convention, and includes several letters to the editor of the Virginia Gazette on the political situation. The diary of Landon Carter, 1763-1778, records daily farming activities, with many comments on his slaves, remarks on the Revolution and its ultimate effect, and reflections on his estrangement from his son Robert Wormeley Carter, the second (1792-1861). The correspondence of Robert Wormeley Carter the second contains more local and agricultural news with a few letters generated by the latter's political career touching on national politics. Of interest are mentions of the War of 1812 and the evacuation of slaves at the approach of British warships, a letter from John Tyler on Andrew Jackson's fiscal policies, and comments on the Whig Party and the Virginia Reform Convention of 1851. One Civil War letter mentions the death of an acquaintance and two affadavits, 1863, concern slaves who fled to Union forces. Interspersed in the large segment of R.W. Carter II's estate settlement papers are several comments on reconstruction in Virginia. Correspondence of Dr. Armistead Nelson Wellford, is chiefly business in nature but also includes his official Civil War pardon signed by President Andrew Johnson. Papers of his son Robert Carter Wellford and grandson Armistead Nelso Wellford include University of Virginia report cards and correspondence with Cassius Francis Lee, Jr., and Earl G. Swem discussing the respective sale and preservation of the Sabine Hall Papers. Correspondence of women in the family includes discussions of schooling, social events, and sickness and deaths. Of interest are a comment on Charlotte Brontë's "Vilette" and a commonplace book of Elizabeth Merry Tayloe's poems. Other items of interest include the agricultural journals, 1813-1860, and mill book containing a slave register, 1831-1845, of the second R.W. Carter; a list of "Negroes Baptized in Richmond County 1723-1724"; election returns for Lancaster and Richmond Counties, 1836; an 1872 brochure urging immigration to the Northern Neck; agricultural essays and medical observations of the 1st Landon Carter and an inventory of his estate; and physician's account ledgers of Beverley R. Wellford. Seventeenth century items include land patents, from William Berkeley, 1650-1665; a surveys, 1650-1684; deeds of sale and indentures; and the will of John Rice. Correspondents include Norborne Berkeley, baron de Botetourt, William Brockenbrough, Charles Carter, Samuel Chase, Raleigh Colston, Richard Corbin, Francis Fauquier, the Rev. Isaac W.
