Letters and a deposition pertaining to the Western Lunatic Asylum, 1836-1856.

The collection consists of three letters to Dr. Francis T. Stribling, 1851-1856, and a deposition, 1836, pertaining to mentally ill patients at the Western Lunatic Asylum in Staunton, Va. The 1836 May 27 deposition of 11 year old Phebe Alexander of Rockbridge County, and her uncle James Alexander, concerns the conduct of her father William H. Alexander, whose release from the Asylum was being considered. The deposition mentions Alexander's physical abuse of his wife and sister and religious excesses at a prayer meeting conducted by him. In a letter, 1851 April 25, Thomas D. Smith, Spotsylvania, writes regarding the "present condition of my afflicted companion," his inability to get her to comply with Stribling's prescription, her horror of returning to Staunton, whether to use coercion, and his lack of funds. In a letter,1852 March 6, N. Burwell, Jr., writes from the Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., concerning his current employment as a travelling salesman of religious books, and mentions Clement Moore Butler, alfred Lee and William Meade.
