Hispanic scholar; philanthropist.
Poet, editor, Hispanic scholar, art collector.
Archer Milton Huntington (1870-1955) was an American philanthropist, art patron, scholar and poet. The son of Arabella Duval Huntington and her husband, railroad industrialist Collis P. Huntington, Archer made substantial contributions -- both scholarly and financial -- in his chosen fields, though he is particularly known for his work in Hispanic Studies. He wrote several scholarly works in the field and in 1904 founded The Hispanic Society of America in New York City, a museum and rare books library which he helped fill with an impressive collection of Hispanic paintings, decorative art, books, manuscripts, maps, prints, and photographs. At about this same time, Archer was named foreign corresponding secretary for the New-York Historical Society; he served in this capacity for several years and contributed to the funding of many of the society's publications.
His first wife, whom he married in 1895, was Helen Manchester Gates, an Englishwoman and author. For his second wife (married in 1923), sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, Archer founded Brookgreen Gardens in South Carolina where her works were displayed as well as those of dozens of other American sculptors. (She returned the favor, creating several Hispanic-themed works for the grounds of the Hispanic Society, including an equestrian sculpture entitled "The Cid.")
In 1936, Huntington donated an endowment which established the Chair of Poetry at the Library of Congress, now known as the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress; he also donated to the American Numismatic Society the funding and land for its headquarters and, later, a library. Together with Anna, he founded the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, one of the largest and finest maritime museums in the world, and established the Archer and Anna Huntington Wild Life Forest Station in the Adirondacks of New York State.
Archer M. Huntington was awarded honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Kenyon College, and the University of Madrid. Among his other philanthropic positions, he was president of the American Geographical Society and a trustee of the American Museum of Natural History, the New-York Historical Society, the Museum of the American Indian, and the Heye Foundation. When he died in December of 1955, The Modern Language Journal published a biographical sketch which included the following praise:
In his passing, Hispanic studies in the United States, Spain, and Hispanic America have lost a generous patron who was also in his own right a scholar of distinction, a poet of charm, and in everything he did a good citizen." ( The Modern Language Journal , Feb 1956, p. 59)

Engineer, economist and pioneer in the rural electrification movement. Huntington was born in Springfield, Ohio and earned his mechanical engineering degree from Ohio State University in 1899. Before college he worked as a linesman for the Springfield Electric Light Co. After college he worked as a salesman and engineer at Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing in the Midwest (1899-1904); operated the Sioux Falls, S.D. Light & Power Co. (1905-1910); and managed the Iowa-Nebraska Electric Light & Power Co. in Norfolk, Neb. (1913-1915). Huntington was also interested in agricultural issues which led him to work as an engineer for the Bitter Root Valley Irrigation Co. in Hamilton, Montana and to a study of cross-pollination of apples for the Northwestern and Montana Fruit Growers Association. In 1916 he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to accept a position at the Iowa Railway & Light Company (later, Iowa Electric Light & Power Co.). Huntington's professional affiliations included the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE) which he served as vice-president (1927-1928, 1930-1931) and president (1932-1933); the National Electric Light Association; the National Farm Chemurgic Council; the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation; and the Iowa Engineering Society. As a member of ASAE's Rural Electric Division he served on the Committee on the Relation of Electricity to Agriculture (1923-1938), a group responsible for studying and reporting on the impact of power on farm production and driving the rural electrification movement. President Hoover selected Huntington to participate in a re-writing of the Economic Survey of 1921. He prepared reports for Iowa Governor John Hammill on the relation of agriculture to industry (1927-1928) and the Iowa Federation of Labor on the effect of mechanization on production and wages (1923-1924) and Iowa's coal industry (1927). In 1928 and 1932 he served as president of the Iowa chapter of the Hoover for President Engineers Club, a group which counseled then candidate Hoover on rural electrification and other agricultural issues.

Chandler, Harry, 1864-1944. Robinson-Farrand papers, 1903-1958.
Title:
Robinson-Farrand papers, 1903-1958.
The Manuscript series contains 20 journals written by George E. Farrand from 1915 to 1954 as well as two printed publications. The journals include daily entries regarding his law practice, the weather, his weight, as well as details regarding family matters and world events, such as the Great Depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, World War II and the start of the Cold War. At the end of most of the journals, he includes a brief summary of his year, including personal, business and world events. The later journals also include numerous news clippings. The Correspondence series is arranged alphabetically by author and predominantly contains letters related to business transactions such as the merger of First National and Security Pacific Banks in Los Angeles and the Julian Petroleum scandal as well as personal correspondence amongst friends, acquaintances, and political allies, including Henry M. Robinson, George E. Farrand, Harry Chandler, George E. Hale, Lou Henry Hoover, Herbert Hoover (many through Hoover's assistants, including Lawrence Richey and Paul Sexson), and Alonzo Englebert Taylor. The Ephemera series is arranged alphabetically by subject and then chronologically within each folder. It contains separate folders for biographical and genealogical materials, cards, empty envelopes, event programs, indices and disposition of the files of Henry M. Robinson, judicial opinions, law school examination, legal documents and research memoranda, miscellaneous office documents, newspaper clippings, notes and minutes from meetings, pamphlets and printed statements, photographs, receipts, securities issues and offering materials, Senate hearings transcripts, speeches and statements of assets and "C" memoranda. The detailed indices of Henry M. Robinson's files indicate the status of his files upon his death and the disposition of those materials by his brother and George E. Farrand.
