Prominent prelate of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. Appointed Archbishop of New York in 1939 and the College of Cardinals in 1946.
Spellman was at this time the Catholic archbishop of New York. Werfel and Spellman appear to have had a relationship of mutual respect and admiration. Werfel sought Spellman's responses to his novels Embezzled Heaven and The Song of Bernadette; and he and Alma Mahler were received by Spellman at least once.

Records of the New York Foundling Hospital, 1869-2009
Title:
Records of the New York Foundling Hospital 1869-2009
The collection documents the programs and administration of the New York Foundling Hospital, 1869-2009, and the St. Agatha Home for Children, which operated separately from the Foundling beginning in 1884, before merging into the Foundling in 1977. The Foundling opened in 1869, under the auspices of the Sisters of Charity, as a Catholic haven for abandoned babies. It was one of the principal institutions sending children to live with families in the country, in a program known today as the "orphan train." That program ended in 1929. Thereafter the Foundling expanded, diversified, and decentralized. Today the Foundling is an organization providing foster care, adoption, social work, and community-based preventive and health services to children and families in New York and Puerto Rico.

Shirley Quill Transport Workers Union of America Photographs Bulk, 1941-1966 1913-1997
Shirley Garry Quill (1915 - 1991) and Michael J. (Mike) Quill (1905 - 1966), President of the Transit Workers Union (TWU) from 1935 to 1966, met in 1943 when she helped him campaign for New York City Council. After the election, Shirley Garry served as Mike Quill’s legislative secretary. Their mutual commitment to union organizing and progressive politics led to a friendship and a long relationship; they married in 1966. The collection focuses on the history of the TWU and Mike Quill, although it also includes Quill family portraits and snapshots and images of early TWU and CIO leadership and conventions. Highlights include a group portrait of the CIO leadership in 1940 (Joe Curran, Quill, Phillip Murray and John L. Lewis); the Unity Slate Victory party; Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking at the Ghandi Society Luncheon; and Mike Quill's last press conference and his memorial service.

Alvin, Casimir D.,. Oral history interview with Casimir D. Alvin. [manuscript]. 1974.
Title:
Oral history interview with Casimir D. Alvin. [manuscript]. 1974.
In 1959, during negotiations between the United Steelworkers of America and eleven steel companies, Cass Alvin first published Laff Releases, satirical and speculative news commentaries concerning the negotiations. In the first interview, Mr. Alvin discusses the Laff Releases coverage of the 1959 negotiations and resolutions, including the meeting between President Eisenhower and Steelworkers President David McDonald, and the meeting between David McDonald, steel magnate Conrad Cooper, and Francis Cardinal Spellman. He also discusses Laff Releases coverage of the 1962 USWA convention in Miami Beach, focusing on the length of office for union officials, the presidential candidacy of John F. Kennedy, and the rise of the union technician involved with collective bargaining and administration of the contract. In the second interview, Mr. Alvin continues with a discussion of the Laff Releases coverage of the 1964 and 1966 USWA conventions in Atlantic City. He also discusses the 1967-68 copper strike and the 1967 merger between the Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers Union and the United Steelworkers of America. Some issues of Laff Releases are included with the typescript.

National Union of Hospital and Health Care Employees. Series 6, Subseries 3. Abe Raskin interview, 1977.
Raskin interview discusses, among other topics, Leon Davis' politics and relations with other labor leaders; unionization of different types of hospitals; organizing efforts among minority workers; collective bargaining legislation and compulsory arbitration for hospital workers; and the union's involvement in city and state politics. The interview with Raskin regards his personal background and early connections with Elliott Godoff and Leon Davis; Davis' background in drugstores, the Communist Party, radical politics, and his connections with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU); politicians' reactions to Davis; Cardinal Spellman's influence on relations between Catholic and Jewish hospitals, and their fears of a communist union president; comparison of unionization of proprietary, public and voluntary hospitals; and relations between David Livingston and Max Greenberg (presidents, RWDSU) and Davis. Also discussed are Harry Van Arsdale's attempts to organize minority workers in the construction trades, the exploitation of hospital workers by hospital philanthropists, the relationships of the union with New York City politicians, the pledge of Brotherhood Party support for Mayor Wagner; compulsory arbitration for hospital workers, police and firemen; the AFL-CIO's reaction to Davis' political reputation; and the positions of German and Russian Jewish groups on hospital workers and social justice. Other topics include the relationships of New York politicians with the Greater New York Hospital Association; the positions of city and state hospitals on the passage of collective bargaining legislation for hospital workers and the inclusion of compulsory arbitration; Joseph Carlino's support for collective bargaining legislation for hospital workers; the alleged Republican labor alignment in New York City; Harold Felix and various political forces influencing Mayor Wagner's executive order regarding collective bargaining rights for hospital workers; 1199's success in organizing the Federation of Jewish Hospitals and its failures in organizing university hospitals; and the establishment of the Permanent Administrative Committee and its effects on unionization of hospitals. Also discussed are future problems of labor and a depressed economy; 1199's tactics in developing rank and file loyalty and leadership and the structure and reputation of 1199 as a socially minded union.

Title:
Records of the New York Foundling Hospital, 1869-2009.
It was one of the principal organizations sending children to live with families in the country, in a program known today as the "orphan train." That program ended in 1929. Thereafter the Foundling expanded, diversified, and decentralized to meet the changing needs of the populations it served. Today the Foundling is an organization providing foster care, adoption, social work, and community-based preventive and health services to children and families in New York and Puerto Rico.

Pew, J. Howard (John Howard), 1882-1971. Papers 1902-1971.
Title:
Papers 1902-1971.
The J. Howard Pew Papers are primarily concerned with Pew's political activities and philanthropy. Of particular interest are the letters which document Pew's activities in the American Liberty League, the Republican National Committee, and the National Association of Manufacturers. Political files include analysis of 1944 election, strategy for state and local elections and analyses of Democratic senators' voting records (1933-1938). Files on Communism include solicitations for the Russian government in exile and information collected by the National Council for American Education on the political activities of selected college professors during the 1940s and 50s. Presbyterian Church files reflect the split in the church over integration, McCarthyism, and civil liberties. To buttress his campaign for conservativism within the church, Pew also sponsored research on the life of Calvin and Calvinism. There are also files from the National Council of Churches, Grove City College, United Presbyterian Foundation, and the Christian Freedom Foundation. Other files describe Pew's involvement with the Glenmede Trust Company and The Pew Memorial Trust. Files contain copies of applications and document awards made.

Papers, 1900-1956.
The John J. Raskob Papers document Raskob's business and political careers as well as his personal life. The papers document significant aspects of the histories of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the General Motors Corporation during the first half of the twentieth century. Raskob played a crucial role in the creation of these two industrial giants. His papers trace the transformation of these companies into modern decentralized corporations and the relationship between business strategy and corporate structure. The Raskob Papers also describe the relationship between Du Pont and G.M. in the years between 1915 and 1950.
