British painter; president of the Royal Academy of Arts.
English painter.
Frederic Leighton was an English painter and sculptor. His well-to-do family lived abroad and travelled extensively, and this exposure to European art, tradition, and individuals greatly enriched his perspective and training. His first mature painting, featuring a complex tableau and rich color, made a significant impression at the Royal Academy and was purchased by Queen Victoria. His early work is characterized by classical themes, while his later paintings tend to be aesthetic. He travelled several times to the Middle East, and adopted Nazarene influences; he became president of the Royal Academy in 1878.

Shields, Frederic, 1833-1911. Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Title:
Correspondence, ca. 1873-1909.
Twenty three letters by Shields (ca. 1873-1909) together with sixteen letters received (1877-1909), mostly from British artists. Included are seventeen letters from Shields to Herbert P. Horne (ca. 1886-1897), editor of the "Century Guild Hobby Horse", a journal dedicated to the revitalization of the decorative arts. Shields discusses his relations with William Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the poetry of Christina Rossetti, Horne's work, and the reproduction of works of art in the journal. In a later letter (1908), Shields acknowledges his debt to Rossetti, noting "Lovely was he, though weak and inconsistent as myself." Letters received include three from Sir Edward Poynter (1891, 1894), two from G. F. Watts (1891, 1901), two from Sir Hubert Von Herkomer (1877), and letters from Walter Crane (1909) and Noel Paton (1896). One of Poynter's letters (1891) mentions Burne-Jones and Millais. Watts states that, because of his lack of independent means, he has been obliged to paint portraits in order to live and this has impeded his true aspirations (1891). He also discusses Shields' designs for murals for the Chapel of the Ascension (1901). Herkomer's letters relate to lithography and his portrait of Richard Wagner and Paton's praises Shield's "Angel of the Chimes", mentions Eaton Hall, and comments on the death of Frederic Leighton. Arranged chronologically.

Royal Academy of Arts records, 1827-1907.
Title:
Royal Academy of Arts records, 1827-1907.
Collection consists primarily of letters received by the Royal Academy from artists and collectors, together with related correspondence, concerning submissions for exhibitions, 1827-1841 and Old Masters Exhibitions 1870-1873 and 1881. Most of the correspondence relates to the exhibition of 1827 and the Old Masters Exhibitions of 1870-1873. The letters frequently contain descriptions of the works submitted or information pertaining to their provenance, transportation and care. The collection assumes added significance as more than half of the unsolicited Old Master paintings were refused by the Academy. Included are minutes of committee meetings (1869) relating to the first of the Old Master Exhibitions in 1870 which contain a statement of purpose for the exhibition. Also included are copies of the catalogs for the Old Masters Exhibitions of 1870-1873 and 1881.

Title:
Letters of Matthew Arnold [manuscript], 1874-1887.
Arnold writes to Thomas Humphrey Ward, 1874, arranging a visit and stating he would not accept a Professorship of English Literature at Oxford until provisions are made for Ward. He writes to Lady Reay, 1878 September 1, regretting an invitation as he is taking his eldest daughter Lucy to the Paris Exhibition. In letters to Sir Frederic Leighton, 1878 November 15 and 1881 April 11, he congratulates Leighton on becoming president of the Royal Academy and agrees to respond to a toast. In a letter to Lord Suffolk, 1879 July 5, he proposes a visit and comments on his essay on Irish Catholicism which converted Lowe and on the Lord Chancellor's bill pertaining to Ireland. In letters to Violet Manners, 1887 May 19 and 31, he sends a volume of poetry and mentions a future fishing trip.

Title:
Letters from Frederic Leighton, ca. 1875-1894.
Collection consists of letters from Leighton to various correspondents concerning the business and workings of the Royal Academy, his financial and personal affairs, and exhibitions; he includes mention of his paintings and the work of other British artists, and occasional comments on art in general. The collection includes two letters received. Several of Leighton's letters were either dictated to a secretary or written in the third person. Though many of the letters are brief, undated, or of a routine nature, the collection is significant because little of Leighton's correspondence was left with his estate. Also included are an undated cabinet photograph of Leighton, a gravure portrait from a newspaper, and an undated letter by the actress Mary Jane Chippendale, glued to the verso of one of Leighton's letters to Miss Frith.

Lord Leighton tersely refuses a request for an article, saying "you are in error in believing that I have written for the 'Youth's Companion" in the United States. I have to make it a rule to decline all literary contribution to periodicals and magazines." Possibly written to editor S. S. McClure. A clipped magazine portrait is pasted to the letter.

Thanking him for returning the manuscript (of Rossetti's Italian poetry translations) with marginal remarks, noting that he passed it to Ruskin. Discussing the attempts to salvage the engraving (for Allingham's poem "The Maids of Elfen Mere") and asking about Millais's design, hoping that it is as good as his picture at the Royal Academy and recalling that "he had an awful row with he hanging committee, who had put it above the level of the eye, but J.E.M. yelled for several hours, and threatened to resign, till they put it right." Mentioning the works of other artists on view at the Royal Academy and discussing at length Leighton's painting. Reporting that MacCracken attempted to sell his pictures at Christie's, and further discussing other artists.

Calderon, P. H. (Philip Hermogenes), 1833-1898. Philip Hermogenes Calderon correspondence from John Everett Millais and Frederic Leighton, 1886-1896.
Title:
Philip Hermogenes Calderon correspondence from John Everett Millais and Frederic Leighton, 1886-1896.
The collection comprises letters reflecting the last years in the lives of both Sir John Everett Millais and Frederic, Lord Leighton. They date from the 1880s and 1890s, and make frequent reference to the inner workings of the Royal Academy, in which Millais, Leighton, and their addressee, Philip Calderon, were involved. At this time, Calderon was serving as the Keeper of the Royal Academy and Leighton as the President. Towards the end of his life, Leighton was forced to resign his position in order to embark on travels meant to improve his health. Millais, himself suffering from the throat cancer that would eventually kill him, served as his substitute in 1895 and formally assumed the President's role in 1896, after Leighton's death. These letters evidence Millais's anxieties about the demands of the President's position, with particular regard to any speaking duties. The letters from Leighton and Millais are both written in a casual, intimate, tone, suggesting a longstanding acquaintance with Calderon. Leighton's missives generally concern aspects of his profession and artistic philosophy, and are sometimes heated in nature when discussing current affairs in the academy. Millais's seem to reflect a closer friendship with Calderon, and while addressing both professional and personal topics, are genial and frank in nature. While he voices concerns about the future of painting and other thoughts about creative processes, he also writes friendly greetings from his home in Scotland, discussing his hunting and fishing successes, and asking Calderon for gossip from London. Leighton's letters, the last of which date to just a couple weeks prior to his death, do not show signs that he was slowing in his dedication to painting. He asks Calderon, in a letter from 1894 or 1895, about plans for a mural at the Royal Exchange, a project that he himself would undertake. Millais's letters, however, evidence his occasional melancholy about the worth of artistic pursuits (despite his continuing work at this time) and, in particular, are movingly honest about the artist's failing health. Millais confesses to discomfort, fear, and despair in his last letters to Calderon. His final communication, written on a slate, was transcribed on paper by his daughter Mary, and includes a note from her regarding the tracheotomy that became necessary to help Millais breathe in the last month of his life.It appears that some of the letters that Calderon wrote to Millais during these years are in the Morgan Library collection. While Calderon's letters to Leighton are not available, a collection of contemporary letters from Leighton to other correspondents is located in the Getty Research Institute.

Haag, Carl, 1820-1915. Letters, 1863.
Title:
Letters, 1863.
The collection comprises six letters. Haag congratulates Frederic Leighton on the works he exhibited at the Royal Academy. Answering his friend's request, he recommends [Edward] Duncan as a watercolor teacher for his young French friend (1863 May 18). The artist accepts with pleasure the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. Leaf (1863 June 16). He informs Mrs. Bircknell that he had been on a holiday on the Rhine, and he was leaving for "beautiful Scotland" (1864 May 23). He sends regrets to Mr. Leaf for an invitation which he cannot attend because he is leaving town (1868 June 8). Haag regrets he cannot visit professor Richard Owen, but has read his biographical notes and listened to his "eloquent and charming speech." He has also read his biograhical note in the University Magazine, with his beautiful portrait, but he would like to see one without "that favorit [sic] velvet cap" (1878 May 7). The artist thanks Henry Harben for sending his volume of poetry, which has brought back nostalgic recollections of Egypt.

Title:
Autograph letters signed from Fanny Kemble to various recipients [manuscript], 1831-1890.
Correspondents: Lady [Anne] Byron, F[rances Power] Cobbe, William [Bodham] Donne, Henry [William] Greville, Mary Charlotte Lloyd and Harriet St. Leger. Includes 167 letters, many letters incomplete, and 9 leaves from her journals. Many of the letters describe her experiences in America and her views on slavery and on the Civil War. Letters written from London, Ireland, Switzerland, Italy and the United States. A letter to Donne (307) tells of John Brown's Raid and castigates him as a "fanatic maniac." Some letters to Greville discuss New England's reactions to the possibility of England's entering the war. Several letters touch on Shakespeare. Othello is a sermon against inordinate affections. She did like [Charles] Kean's Othello. She thinks she would not like Fechter's; his Iago must be like her father's (347, 247, 249, 245). Sarah Bernhardt's portrayal of Lady Macbeth recalled Mrs. Siddons' notion of her as a small delicate fair blue-eyed woman (187). The letters refer constantly to her family and friends and to contemporary artists, actors, writers, preachers and politicians, among them Joanne Baillie (223), Ann Bradshaw (247), Emily Brontë (353), John Gibson, William Godwin (387), Nathaniel Hawthorne (381), Harriet Hosmer, Henry James, Charles Kingsley (387-389), Frederic Leighton, Longfellow (413), Macaulay, F. D. Maurice (393), Mendelssohn, Theodore Parker, Adelaide Procter (415) and Shelley (363). Also, a letter to Fanny Kemble from Frances P. Cobbe, July 8, [1875] (19b), a letter to Frances Cobbe from Fanny Kemble's maid, Eleanor Brianzoni, January 19, 1898, telling her of Fanny Kemble's death (457), a poem on Venice by Fanny Kemble, ca. 1861 (453) and several photographs and illustrations. Poem listed in Folger index of first lines. The fragments of her journals, 1831-1832, ca. 1840 and ca. 1850, include an anecdote about Mrs. Siddons and Richard Sheridan (435), musings on Lawrence's drawings of the Kemble family (449), a description of her feelings on seeing an actress on her first night (441) and a discussion of The tempest and A midsummer night's dream (439).
