The letter was written before the Prince of Orange's ascension to the throne of England in 1689 along with his wife Mary, his first cousin whom he married in 1677. They served jointly on the English throne. He was born the Prince of Orange (the son of William II of Orange and Mary, Princess Royal of England) and at various times in his life also held titles as the Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel.
Stephanus Van Cortlandt (1643-1700) was Mayor of New York City from 1677 to 1678 and 1686 to 1688.

Passetems, [late 17th century].
Title:
Passetems, [late 17th century].
Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, of a two-volume collection of verses and letters in French. Many of the letters and verses are addressed to King Louis XIII, Duc de Richelieu, and members of the Richelieu family; the manuscript also contains numerous satirical verses on the Prince of Orange. The first volume includes a collection of five "Enigmes," short riddle-poems with answers at the conclusion of the section, as well as two acrostic poems in Latin, while numerous bouts-rimes appear throughout both volumes. Both volumes end with a section titled "Divers Impromptus joyeux, Tant prononcez que chantez, en grand Companie," many of which indicate they are set to current tunes.

[Account of revenues granted to the public services, 1689-1746], [early 18th century].
Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of accounts of public revenue, loans, grants, and payments from 1689 to 1846, organized by year. The early years are represented in two parts: monetary grants and appropriations made by Parliament, and "A state of what was demanded and Granted for the Service of the Army & Navy" that year, while the years from 1698-1746 are represented by much fuller details of Parliamentary decisions regarding public funds. An entry in 1703, for example, notes the "Charge of Alliances with the King of Portugal this year;" entries in 1738 grant money "towards maintaining the Forts & Settlements of the Royal African Company on the Coast of Africa" and "towards establishing the Colony of Georgia in America;" and an entry in 1739 awards money to "Mrs. Stevens on her discovering her Medicine for the Stone."

Manuscript letterbooks in several secretarial hands containing copies of incoming and outgoing correspondence, official documents, and diplomatic papers associated with James Cressett, Envoy Extraordinary to the courts of Brunswick and Celle (Lunenberg) from 1693 to 1703. Volumes 1 and 2 contain copies of outgoing letters from Cressett to members of the British government, including Secretaries of State Sir John Trenchard, James Vernon, Sir Charles Hedges, and Sir William Trumbull and Secretary of War Sir William Blathwayt. Other correspondents include the Dukes of Marlborough and Shrewsbury and the Earls of Albemarle and Portland. Volume 3 contains copies of official letters received by Cressett from various officers at Whitehall, particularly Vernon, Blathwayt, and Hedges. Volume 4 contains copies of official diplomatic correspondence between King William and other heads of state in Latin, French, and German; copies of negotiating memoranda, background papers, and drafts of proposed treaty articles; and other diplomatic papers. The major topic of the correspondence is the protracted and multinational negotiations that resulted both in several treaties among various European powers and in the War of the Spanish Succession. Cressett requests instructions and sends summaries of negotiating sessions, current rumors, information from spies and agents, and proposals for future English positions in the talks. Cressett sends much news of events in the royal house of Hanover, including the imprisonment of Georg Ludwig's wife Sophia Dorothea. The letterbooks trace the eventual emergence of Georg Ludwig as the future heir to the English throne as well. Other topics include the various discussions concerning the succession to the Spanish throne, the alliances formed against France, and the first campaigns of the war.

Title:
Letters 1700 Decem[be]r 5.
Long's letter to the king describes the great wealth which can be had from five gold mines, if the English, with the help of the Indians, can seize control of the area from the Spanish. Long suggests that the negro mine workers be used to build fortifications at the mouth of the river in the Gulf of Darien, so that the country will be secure for English colonization. He also proposes that the king send English missionaries to win over the natives. Long asks the secretary to see that the king reads his letter.

Title:
Letters to and from Col. William Legge, transcribed from the originals in the possession of William Fourth Earl of Dartmouth, 1816-1817.
Manuscripts, in a single hand, containing copies of 373 letters arranged in chronological order and dated between 1641 and 1688, and extra-illustrated with many prints and drawings, primarily engraved portraits of the correspondents. The letters in the first volume are addressed to William Legge, and mainly discuss political and military activities, including tactics during the English Civil War; correspondents include Sir William Davenant and King Charles I. This volume also contains numerous letters concerning the marriage negotations of John Butler, 1st Earl of Gowran, the son of the Duke of Ormonde. The letters are annotated in red ink. The work is prefaced by a letter to William, 4th Earl of Dartmouth, by Bagot, Dartmouth's relative. The second volume contains letters addressed to Legge's son, George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth, which primarily concern political affairs. Many letters are from James II, which refer to his exile and his attempts to return to England. Others mention the Rye House Plot; congratulate Dartmouth on becoming Master of the Ordinance; and discuss opposition to King Charles II. Several letters request Dartmouth's help in releasing Philip, Baron Wharton from the Tower. The third volume contains letters addressed to Baron Dartmouth, which primarily concern preparations for a naval resistance to the expected invasion by William, Prince of Orange. Letters include instructions from the Admiralty naming Dartmouth an Admiral of the fleet and instructing him to oppose William's landing; and letters from James II and Samuel Pepys providing rumors and information on the movements of William's fleet.

Cleveland, John, 1613-1658. Satirical verse, 1630-1688.
Title:
Satirical verse, 1630-1688.
The collection contains twelve 17th century satirical poems written in various hands, dealing with political and state affairs and people (John Booker, Charles I, Elizabeth I, James I, William III, Earl of Strafford, and Evan Walls) in the troubled Stuart period: the death of kings, plots against the great, and religious dissentions. All but one are unattributable and unrecorded. These types of satirical verses had a clandestine circulation in manuscripts among privileged persons (see the Commonplace book of Robert Herrick) and some were published in Fugitive tracts written in verse which illustrate the condition of religious and political feeling in England, edited by H. Huth and W.C. Hazlitt (1875). Eleven of the twelve are accompanied by a typed transcription.

Harrach, Ferdinand Bonaventura, graf von, 1636-1706. Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].
Title:
Diplomatic papers of graf von Harrach, [1670s?].
The papers contain copies of treaties, pacts, negotiation minutes, and other diplomatic agreements; copies of orders and instructions, secret instructions, credentials, memoranda, reports, and correspondence; and copies of newsletters, accounts of current events, and historical background material, all documenting diplomatic, political and military affairs in Europe from the point of view of the Hapsburg emperors between ca. 1600 and 1675. In addition to extensive information concerning the close, if sometimes strained, diplomatic and political connections between the Empire and the Hapsburg rulers of Spain, there is much documentation concerning the diplomatic and military events and confused aftermaths of the Thirty Years' War. Several volumes cover the imperial response to the almost continuous challenges to Hapsburg rule in the Spanish Netherlands and Low Countries; Catalonia and Portugal; the Kingdom of Naples; Hungary; and the Balkans. The multitude of imperial efforts to manage and counter the domination of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean is particularly well traced, including repeated interventions in Poland's elective monarchy; the wars in Hungary and Transylvania; the Venetian response to the Turks; and the arrival of a Turkish ambassador in Vienna. In addition, alliances and conflicts among the smaller German states and principalities, and the Hapsburg role in them, are well represented. Also included are documents tracing the Holy Roman Empire's deteriorating relations with France, especially during the Franco-Spanish War. Background information on France is located in Volume 18 and includes historical reports on relations between France and Turkey, the life of Cardinal Mazarin, copies of correspondence between the French and imperial courts, and papers concerning the conduct of French ambassadors in Vienna. The volumes also hold copies of much correspondence concerning the ultimately unsuccessful imperial negotiations with the member states of the Triple Alliance (England, Holland and Sweden), particularly the English discussions of the baron de Lisola (Volume 5). Volume 17 contains historical material on relations with England, Sweden and Denmark, and includes reports on the execution of Charles I, the rule of Oliver Cromwell, a description of the 1666 fire of London, and translations and copies of four letters by Peter Paul Rubens discussing his diplomatic activity in London in the 1620s.

Manuscript, on paper, in a professional Italic hand, of Lord Mulgrave's pamphlet criticizing both James II and William III. Written in early 1689, the work summarizes errors made by both men during the Glorious Revolution and concludes with the "Author's Observations," which include a detailed examination of the ways in which "a Protestant Party, in the very Exercise of Reformation, through their fears of Popery ... fall into the very Errors they charge upon the Papists."

Title:
General Count de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau, and related materials, ca. 1892-1895.
Two printed articles by J. G. Rosengarten, General Comte de Rochambeau and The Château de Rochambeau (both published in 1895), bound together in an extra-illustrated volume, with a title page reading: General Count de Rochambeau and The Chateau de Rochambeau (Philadelphia: G. L. Fitzgerald & Co., 1895). The volume contains an original letter from Charles J. Stillé (dated 28 December 1892); 51 print portraits; 4 other illustrations (2 depictions of the surrender at Yorktown in 1781; a view on the Hudson; and the State House in Philadelphia in 1778); and 3 regional maps (Philadelphia; Baltimore; and New York). Most of the items, including the leaves of the articles, are inlaid. The first article is from the American Historical Register (vol. 3, no. 14, October 1895, p. [195]-208, with a different portrait substituted on the first page); and the second is a reprint from the Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society (vol. 33, no. 146, January 16, 1895, p. 353-361). Stillé's letter concerns Rosengarten's translation from Max von Eelking (The German allied troops in the North American war of independence). Of the portraits, 5 are of Rochambeau; 5 of George Washington; 3 of Charles Cornwallis; 2 of François comte de Grasse; 2 of Charles Gravier Vergennes; 2 of Charles de Houx de Vioménil; and one each of 33 other individuals. The portrait of Marie Joseph Paul Lafayette is in color. The portrait of Étienne Maurice Gérard was evidently included in error, in connection with a mistaken reference in The Château de Rochambeau to the French minister in Philadelphia in 1782 as Mr. Gérard (p. 357); the minister at that time was Anne-César, chevalier de La Luzerne, who succeeded Conrad Alexandre Gérard in the post in 1779. The volume has a typed index of illustrations at the front. The spine covering is wanting, and covers detached.

17 letters (drafts) to Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester. 1699 4/14 Aug to 1701 Oct 3, various places, 1660?-1722.
Manuscripts, in two hands, of a collection of 17 letters to Charles Montagu, Duke of Manchester, while Montagu was ambassador-extraordinary at the court of France. The letters concern diplomatic affairs, many detailing King William III's responses to Montagu's reports. Several letters discuss the treatment of English seamen and other English subjects in France; one letter concerns a petition for King William's protection for those on an English ship seized by the French, while another reports on the violence done to an English ship attacked by a French ship, contrary to treaties between the two countries. Others refer to the proposed restitution of the town of Brisae; two letters concern the escape of the "villain" Count Boselli, an Italian under the protection of France who had threatened to assassinate King William III; and the last letter refers to the mourning King William III will undertake upon the death of James II, encourages Montagu to do likewise, and recalls him to England. Fifteen of the letters are autograph; and two are in another hand.

Title:
[Collection of 17th century poems], [1680-1700].
Manuscripts, in different hands, of a collection of several dozen primarily satirical and anonymous poems, many scatological. The majority of the poems are political satires, especially concerning the abdication of King James II and the accession of King William III; other targets include Charles Montagu, Earl of Halifax; religious zeal; and France. Other poems satirize women, including Barbara Villiers (afterwards Palmer), Countess of Castlemaine and Duchess of Cleveland, with reference to her affair with rope-dancer Jacob Hall; Mrs. Moseley and her link with Anthony Ashley Cooper, 1st Baron Ashley and 1st Earl of Shaftesbury; and women's conduct generally. The collection also includes a broadside printing of Packington's Pound, as well as numerous satirical songs sung to its tune.

[Autobiography], 1732 Apr 13.
Manuscript, in a single hand, of an account of the author's adventurous life. The work describes the political intrigues in which he was involved, including his work as a double agent for William II after he had been persuaded "to renounce the doctrine of the Church of Rome and to imbrace that of the Church of England" and his acquaintance with, and the personal history of, the Jacobite spy Matthew Crone, whom he met when "the Queen...recommending him as a perfect stranger in that country and language, commanded me to assist him in getting good Lodging." Later, he describes his time in prison, where he remained for almost 15 years, and declares at the end of the manuscript, "as surely it will be the last account I shall write I sollemly declare...that everything I have writ in the narrative is true." The manuscript is followed by a "Postscript," in which he writes, "I have thus shewed you kind reader the adventures of my unhapy life the various changes of my condition which hardly any man living in the resent or late ages has seen more of the vain glories of the world-the pomp and grandeurs of the English and other Courts wheare I have often apeered in great Splendor."

Dr. Oldish's plea for some seamen who were condemn'd as pyrates for fighting under K. James's commission, circa 1693.
Manuscript on paper, in a single hand, containing two speeches relating to the prosecution of seamen as pirates who had been fighting under King James' commission. The first piece consists of Oldys's testimony before the Lords of the Council and Commissioners of the Admiralty, in which he refused to prosecute these men, declaring that "pyrates are common enemies to all mankind, having no Legal Authority for what they do, but these shew a Commission signed James Rex," while the Lords of the Council argued that James II had no power to write such a commission, having been deposed by King William III. The second piece consists of the speech to Parliament by the prisoners John Golding, Thomas Jones, John Ryan, Darby Collins, Richard Shevers, Patrick Quidly, John Slaughter, and Constaine De Hartley, in which they appeal the decision to condemn them as traitors.

Title:
A form of prayers used by King William III / supposed to be written by the late Archbishop Tillotson. [17--?]
A manuscript copy of John Tillotson's A form of prayers, dating from approximately the first half of the 18th century. Though this work appears in later publications of Tillotson's collected works and there is little question of his authorship, the "supposed" attribution given by the transcriber of this volume arises from the fact that the 1704 publications of A form of prayers were published anonymously.
