Kazan, Elia. Typed letter signed : Beverly Hills, Calif., to John [Steinbeck], 1949 May 18.
Title:
Typed letter signed : Beverly Hills, Calif., to John [Steinbeck], 1949 May 18.
Discussing his intention to begin working on the screenplay for Viva Zapata! Noting that he does not want to rush his work because the script is so big and cohesive that he needs "time to turn it around on all sides like you do with a mountain nd see which side is the best for an approach" and hoping that this will work for Zanuck, who usually works very quickly. Referencing his upcoming trip to Europe, and asking to meet with Steinbeck at the beginning of August once he returns.

Faulkner, William, 1897-1962. The last slaver [manuscript] : typescripts, 1936.
Title:
The last slaver [manuscript] : typescripts, 1936.
Three versions of the movie script The last slaver, on which Faulkner worked. Version one, 1936 September 24, stamped "Temporary" contains initials "D.Z." and name "Dorothy" on cover. The script is a 144-p. mimeograph copy, heavily annotated in pencil on the title and first page with infrequent penciled notations throughout. It includes a typewritten two-page inter-office memorandum listing several suggestions from Nunally Johnson to Darryl F. Zanuck on which Zanuck has marked reactions. Version two, 1936 October 10, sub-captioned "Revised Temporary Draft" has initials "D.Z." pencilled on cover. It is a 157-page original typescript and is heavily annotated, perhaps by Zanuck. Version three, 1936 October 10, is stamped "Revised Temp." on cover. It is a 144-page mimeograph copy prepared in a separate typing from the preceding, resulting in variant formatting of the text.

Responding to their idea for a comedy (as outlined in MA 3659.73). Saying that it is very amusing and original, but that it sounds like a "one joke idea" that you might read in the New Yorker. Noting, however, but others might be interested in it and "just because I do not do handsprings over this idea does not mean that I am not eagerly in the market for any other idea that strikes you."

Remarking that for the past few months he and Steinbeck have been thinking of an idea for a comedy, mentioning "it seems to us the basis of a very funny moving picture" and wondering if Zanuck would be interested in it. Noting that it is based on an experience that Steinbeck had during the war and giving a detailed synopsis of the idea.

Noting that he is dictating the letter with Gadj (i.e., Kazan) present, and that they have been discussing the script for Viva Zapata! Remarking that they agree on the minor points he has brought up, and so concentrating in this letter on two major points: 1. the character of Bicho; and 2. the importance of emphasizing that "the Government forces are not "hot" on the trail of Zapata" at page 25 of the script. Asking Steinbeck to make these changes while he is in Europe and while Kazan is directing A Streetcar Named Desire.

Responding in detail to his letter (MA 3659.60). Noting that it is not their intention to produce a historical drama, but to use the historical character to "highlight and perhaps explain the problems of the present day." Disagreeing with his suggestion that the actors speak with Mexican accents and discussing the possibility of using a Corrida singer as the narrator, suggesting that the film could be framed around Silva (a Corrida singer who rode with Zapata). Agreeing with most of his points and asking for further suggestions on how to cut the script.

Asking him to give the following confidential information to Kazan so he can study it before they speak on the telephone the following day. Discussing the political ramifications of their work on Zapata; noting that everyone with whom Kazan has worked so far "are definitely either communists or leftwingers" and that they do not want to jeopardize their positions in Mexico by associating themselves with the project unless it is definitely pro-left or pro-communistic. Referencing a similar situation that he experienced in France two years before and noting that while it is clear that the cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa would like to work on the project, he "has deeper responsibilities and is afraid to be associated with it unless it goes 100 percent to the left." Suggesting that they first finalize the script and then distribute it widely to the Mexican authorities.

Remarking that the impending release of the film Viva Zapata! has been brought to the attention of his department. Remarking that three actors in the film have "records of affiliation with organizations deemed as subversive or communistic" and that all of the books they have obtained on Zapata depict him as a "brutal and ruthless General" glorified by the Mexican Communist Party in America. Requesting, therefore, a special screening of the film to determine "whether the content is injurious to our organization's ideals an principles."

Noting that "the idea of Zapata being a Communist is simply fantastic," remarking that he was assassinated "before there was such a thing as a functioning Communist Party anywhere int he world" and that he rode into battle flanked by Catholic priests. Typed letter : [New York], to Darryl Zanuck, 1949 Dec. 9.
Noting that he has met with "Gadge" (i.e., Kazan) following the receipt of Zanuck's wires, and outlining the results of their discussions. Noting that: 1. the Mexican church should not be consulted for permission to make the film; 2. the Minister of Communications oversees censorship in Mexico, and that while they should not have any censorship issues he will probably have to be "paid off;" 3. who to contact to obtain permission to use the facilities of the Mexican government; 4. that opposition of the film is most likely to come from the Mexican film industry itself, especially with the recent memory of the film Viva Villa; 5. that Kazan would like to test Pedro Armendarrez for the part of Pete; and 6. that Gabriel Figuerrola is both the best cameraman and probably the most powerful man in the Mexican film industry, and suggesting that he be approached to possibly work on the film. Noting that he has two plays to write in the spring, and giving his contact information in New York City.

Stating his willingness to begin research for [Viva Zapata!] before receiving the "official sanction," noting that if they are successful in securing the rights to produce the film that they will proceed with a contact, and if they are unsuccessful that Zanuck will only need to pay Steinbeck's already-incurred expenses. Discussing the possibility of setting up a Mexican company as was done with his film The Pearl.

Typed letter : [Beverly Hills, Calif.], to John Steinbeck and Elia Kazan, 1950 May 3.
Concerning the script for the film Viva Zapata!, remarking that it is "exciting, dramatic, and enlightening" but that it will be expensive to produce and that not many pictures about Mexico have been financially successful. Noting that he likes the script because "it is a great story regardless of background or nationality" and suggesting that it be cast with unknown actors. Discussing five points at length: 1. on whether to use a Corrida singer as the narrator; 2. a confusing plot point in scene 162; 3. Zapata's search for a leader; 4. reinserting Zapata's premonition that he is about to die; and 5. the need to shorten the script by twenty pages. Followed by several precise edits, suggestions and queries regarding specific points in the script.

Regretting to hear that Steinbeck has been having trouble with his eyes. Noting that he did not expect him to "have easy sledding with the script;" wishing that he could be of help but regretting that "it is impossible at this stage." Apologizing for the length of time it took him to read Viva Zapata! Remarking that the screenplay is a starting point: praising the fine scenes and Steinbeck's treatment of Zapata's personal life and remarking on some of the problems, agreeing with Steinbeck that Zapata "is just so good that no inner conflict existed." Relaying Zanuck's suggestion that the film focus on just one element of Zapata's life and suggesting that they meet before Kazan travels to Europe. Remarking that he does not want to rush any work on the script because "it's too big and too good."

Discussing "Gadget" Kazan's excitement about the film Viva Zapata! and hoping he will be deeply involved in the research process as "this will be very valuable not only for his direction, but for his understanding and casting;" noting that he has "activated my little group of bandits in Mexico" and that the research process is underway; asking him to clarify with Darryl Zanuck the importance of working with a Mexican producer (if not with a Mexican production company) and recommending Oscar Danzigger (i.e., Danciger) for the job, noting that they have worked together in the past. Saying he is extremely pleased to hear that the studio is excited about the project, but suggesting that the less publicity the better until the project is "ready to go."
