John Murray was an important and successful British publisher. He was among the first publishers to form connections with authors, notably Byron, and traveled in literary circles. A consummate businessman, he was often guided by his Tory principles; he founded the Quarterly Review in part to give voice to his political views.
British publisher.
John Samuel Murray, English publisher.
John Murray II (1778-1843), was the second proprietor of John Murray publishing house. It had been founded by his father in 1768. Under his leadership, such authors as Walter Scott, Jane Austen, John Wilson Croker, Leigh Hunt, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Madame de Stael, Thomas Moore, Sir John Franklin (the explorer), Washington Irving, Isaac Disraeli, and Thomas Robert Malthus were published by the Murray publishing house. He also published the first cookbook for domestic cookery rather than institutional cookery. It is Murray's association with George Gordon, Lord Bryon, for which he is primarily remembered as a publisher. Murray published Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, which was very successful, and other of Byron's works. As of this writing (Fall 2001), the John Murray publishing house is still publishing and still has its offices at 50 Albemarle Street, London.
Scottish publisher John Murray, son of publisher John Murray, directed the family's publishing house to unprecedented success. Aided by keen insight and a courageous vision, he published Byron, Jane Austen, Walter Scott, Robert Southey, and many others. In collaboration with John Constable, he co-owned the Edinburgh Review, and, along with George Canning, founded the rival Quarterly Review. His house was the center of British literary society. He was among the friends of Byron who decided to burn his manuscript journals to protect the poet's reputation after his death.
English publisher.

Lord Byron story and letter page with seal, 1822-1823.
Manuscript of a short story by Byron, written in Italy in February 1823, just before Byron sailed to Greece. The manuscript is prefaced by a later typewritten note (which says that the story is autobiographical), and followed by a later typewritten transcript. Also, last page of a letter from Byron to John Murray, 1822 (used as the envelope), with Murray's address in London, bearing Byron's red wax seal. Also bound in is an engraved portrait of Byron by H.B. Hall. Laid in are two 1963 typewritten letters to George Healey, head of the Dept. of Rare Books at Cornell, from Louis F. Peck, identifying the manuscript as the one published in Prothero's edition of Byron's Letters and journals (1924), v. 6, p. 439-441. The binding is modern half calf over marbled paper covers.

Murray, John, 1778-1843. The John Murray letters, [1809-1842].
Title:
The John Murray letters, [1809-1842].
Almost certainly from the collection of John Wilson Croker, these letters are probably those not used by Louis J. Jennings in writing Croker's Correspondence and Diaries (London: John Murray, 1884). They are almost exclusively from Murray to Croker. Many are addressed to Croker, and those that are not may be assumed, from their contents and presence in the collection, to be from Murray to Croker. They cover the years between 1809 and 1842. The core of the collection, 318 letters was sold by a London bookseller to Dr. Walter E. Peck in 1925. These were sold to Luther Brewer of Cedar Rapids sometime in 1928. Brewer later sold the collection to Special Collections at University of Iowa Libraries. One of the owners added some items because the collection now consists of 342 pieces. Some letters are missing, with an annotation that they were returned to Dr. Peck. In most such cases, the transcription is still in the collection. This collection is part of the Leigh Hunt Collection and has a classification number, MsL M9826c. The letters are inlaid in folios, with front and back visible. The folios were assigned numbers, probably by Dr. Peck. They are not in chronological order, and most of them are undated, or marked only with the day of the week. Andrew J. Green, a student at Washington State College in the late twenties, wrote a Master's thesis on the letters, and several copies of this thesis are part of the collection. He also transcribed the letters and annotated the folios with the primary subjects of the letters. These transcriptions are part of the collection, as well. The numbering system created by Dr. Peck has been used to organize these letters, and Green's annotations have been retained and, in some cases, augmented.

Remarking that if this letter reaches her while she is still in bed, that she is lazy and sleepy, and apologizing for keeping her up so late the evening before. Noting that the Sabbath is a day of rest but also a day of sorrow because they will not see each other unless she meets him at Taylor's at half past twelve. Mentioning that he has ordered Matthew "to turn thief & steal you a quart of Honey" but wondering "What is Honey to the sweetness of thee, who art sweeter than all the flowers it comes from." Giving an account of Catherine Fourmantel's ancestry and relationship with Laurence Sterne. Remarking (erroneously) that Sterne met and married another woman after a one-month courtship even after he had been addressing Miss Fourmantel for five years, and that "the consequence was the total derangement of the intellect of Miss De [Fourmantel]" who ended up in a Private Mad-House. Noting that her own father visited Fourmantel in the madhouse, and eventually acquired Sterne's letters to her, which were passed down in the family to Mrs. Henry Weston.
